Would any of Liverpool's midfield be anywhere near Barca's team? Yet you can't say Liverpool are underdogs when they meet Barca in the semis. Different team set ups and player profiles.
World class manager kind of makes a difference...

It's easier to upgrade a midfield than both fullbacks, a center back and all 3 attackers though.

And can we stop short of thinking Ole is comparable with Klopp?
I am not comparing him to Klopp. Workhorse midfielders are a mainstay of counter attacking teams, which Liverpool are. Mourinho also utilised McTominay in a similar role and he showed promise in his first season as well. I would prefer to get better midfielders but he has shown enough in my opinion to be here.

Despite the abuse that Milner and Henderson take, they have shown a lot more than McTominay. He doesn't even start for Scotland.

Pool fans groan and moan everytime Henderson plays, he's not good for anytihng except getting stuck in. Milner has a bit more to his game, he can play wide and is amazing at penalties.

I disagree but if we all thought the same about everything then the world would be very boring. Henderson's shown some quality recently in games against Bayern, Porto, Chelsea and for England. Although admittedly McTominay's stock has risen in the same time frame. Still would rather have Henderson than Scott for the time being.

As a United fan it pains me when people let rivalries cloud their judgement to such a ridiculous degree. Of course Henderson and Milner are currently better players than McT - if anyone genuinely disputes this they need their heads checked.

I like McT but do I think we should be looking to bring in players in his position this summer, absolutely. Individually our CMs are all over the shop - Pogba is undoubtedly a gifted player but mentally like a yo-yo, Fred is an enigma, McT is a decent youth prospect, Herrera is off to PSG, Pereira will move on as not getting game time, Mata covers 1km per game... there's no unit there, just a random group of players who get dominated every game we play good teams.

I don't hold anything against McTominay for last night. He's a kid and has a lot of developing to do. There should be better players around him.

Ofcourse I would have Henderson over McTominay, because he's a better work horse. But plenty of Liverpool fans will tell you that they struggle to create with Henderson and Milner in the team. That is why they bought two midfielders in to provide something different.

I see no reason why McTominay can't be that type of player for us, with more experience he'll get better. He's an academy player so the advantage is that he will not make a fuss playing a role like that.

Milner's been playing for 22 years, Henderson for 10 so yeah they've obviously shown a lot more than Scott McTominay has in one and a half seasons. :houllier:

Quite the opposite, they've not shut up about how good he's been this season.

He is an ok squad player, the O'Shea type. There is no way he should start in a CL quarter final though or in tough league games

Ah right so I must have imagined several pool fans saying Henderson and Milner in midfield means they will lack creativity. How about the fact that their midfield does feck all going forward and they rely too much on their forwards.

A bit of an exaggeration - anyway, sobering side note: I read that and I thought, "wow 22 years is like a lifetime..." and then I realized that 22 years ago was 1997, and that's when Ok Computer, Blur (self-titled) Urban Hymns and In it For The Money came out, and it seems like that was only a few years ago. Getting older really is something, each year seemingly passing more quickly than the next, nostalgia growing as hair recedes. It's funny to look back at how life can move so quickly, and yet so much can change (job, marriage, children, divorce, etc.)

22 years ago, Bill Clinton was the President; Ronaldo was entering true phenomenon stage, Zidane was preparing for his big moment with France.

22 years ago, Titanic came out.

22 years ago, Princess Diana died.

22 years....22 years my friends.

Both O'Shea and Scott handled themselves in tough league games.

I have moments like that all the time. Gets more and more frequent the older you get. Soon you’ll be able to ride them out without posting about them on redcafe. I’m not there yet myself.

I’m not sure we’ll ever get there! But better to subject the Caf to my sentimental rambling than to make my kids suffer through it, I suppose ;)

Scott McTominay reveals Manchester United 'b******ing' from Jose Mourinho which made him fear he'd ruined big chance

I was arguing with one of the first team lads in training and he said 'hey, kid, when you come into the first team, the other players - they have to like you.'
"'You're not a superstar', he said and I drove back to digs thinking 'have I just ruined it for myself? I couldn't believe it.

"I thought 'I hope he knows I don't think I'm a star, I'm the polar opposite.' He probably just wanted to see what I was made of, what sort of lad he had on his hands.

"You're liked by what you do on the pitch and how you are off the pitch and I feel Mourinho saw something in me at a time some people did and some people didn't, and I'm grateful."

He did nothing overall. He is good player to have without the ball, but with it he is fairly ineffective.

Losing to Comeback Winning!
McBench and the team is destabilized. Nothing new there. Genius tactical decision.

First half is a mess, our midfield is so messy, no flow. Lack of confidence spread to every players.

Early 2nd half is way better, more stable.... but why the heck is he playing as advanced RCM???
Anyhow, strangely he's often the only one making runnings into the box... while the rest of our good attackers did not... so weird.

Fairly good performance by this point, the best (which doesn't say much since everyone else were horrible) until....

Bizarre decision afterwards putting him in an advanced RM role, where he not-surprisingly played so bad.

Stick him to holding role in midfield please, that's where he's at his best~
And start him always. The team is a mess... and the manager's decision is also a big mess.

---

He's one of the four players today whom I feel proud and can say I still have little hope of this team.

Not sure why he's leading the MOTM poll, not knocking him as such but he didn't do anything to effect the game when he came on, we got outplayed and outworked just as much in the 2nd half as we did in the first, he also didn't put any more effort in than Fred who was unfairly hooked instead of El Lumberinho. .

Only player who gave a shit enough to question the ref for the Martial foul not given.

Damning of the first team but showed he's one of ours.

At our current rate of scoring, he’s got the Utd goal of the month for April on lock.

Well done McT!

Absent again in big game. Cept' this time he's completely out of the team, not on bench. Well done by the manager.

Forgiven if he's last min injured. Doubt that.

Tbf, the 5 defense system works for a while as long as the front 5 are helping and doing their job -- they only did it first half. And when we concede two, no players upped their game, so disappointing. Midfield become a mess when Pereira, Rashford and Lingard quit 2nd half so soon and we know how Fred's game works.

All I want is to have at least one player of ours playing whom we can still get behind to support and trusted to give it their all even if we're losing and who tend to up their game in important match, alas.

At least wait for the news if he's injured or not.

Cant find anything that says why he wasnt even on the bench yesterday, didn't he start the Everton game on the bench too? Is he carrying an injury or something?
