If you could sell and sign 2 players in Defence, Midfield and Attack who would it be?

The amount of people that want to keep young on here :lol:
I'm more amazed at how few people want Alderweireld considering how terrible we are at the back, especially on the ball, and considering his price. Alderweireld should be a cert for me, with another centre back (de Ligt, Koulibaly, Škriniar) coming in as the big money buy in defence.

And Toby is a lot more achievable than de Ligt as well

I can't for the life of me understand why people would still lose Smalling before Young, Jones, Rojo or even Bailly really. Madness

Most seem to be in agreement that Sancho, De Ligt and Felix are worth breaking the bank for. They'd cost in excess of 400m though..

I'll join the muppet train too:

  • Attackers: Sanchez and Lingard out - Sancho and Chiesa in.
  • Midfield: Matic and Mata out - Tonali and Neves in
  • Defenders: Young and Darmian out - De Ligt and AWB in.
I'm all for buying young and building for a long reign from Ole.

I think this would be the quickest and most efficient way of conducting an overhaul of the squad.

Removing clear deadwood or underperforming players and replacing them with potential or clear talent.

This would result in quick wins to improve the squad.

Mine are
Attack OUT - Sanchez and Mata
Attack IN - Sancho and Joao Felix

Midfield OUT - Matic and Herrera
Midfield IN - Rodri and Neves

Defence OUT - Smalling and Darmian
Defence IN - De Ligt and Wan Bissaka

Whilst there are many more players I would like rid of I'm trying to be realistic changing only a maximum of 6 players in the summer.
Attack OUT........ Lukaku,and Sanchez,
Attack IN...........Felix and Lozano

Midfield OUT......Matic and Herrera
Midfield IN........ Ndombele and Fernandes

Defence OUT..... Rojo and Darmian
Defence IN........ De ligt and Meunier

You would sell Smalling (our first choice CB) over Rojo (who never plays)?
Smallings had nearly a decade and not really proven to be an overall world class player. A good defender he is. Whilst Rojo at centre back has done well in a couple of runs he has had. I'd like to see him have a run of games with Lindelof or even a new signing next season before being marked to be shipped out if he hasn't proven himself.

Of all the deadwood in CB (Rojo, Bailly, Jones), he wants to sell Smalling. I think he's just in for reaction.
At some point in time you have to call time on Smalling and Jones.

Rojo and Bailly are not yet throwaway players. They've came to a club and seen 2 or 3 managers in almost as many seasons. Never had a settled run or been injury free.

Jones and Smalling though have proven over a decade to be prone to brain farts while playing and Jones also injury prone. Smalling not being able to actually play football would be the reason time is called on his United career. The fact that Jones can play abit when he's fit means I'd keep him if I had to for a season.

Bailly or Rojo could yet potentially succeed paired with Lindelof or a new centre back. Argentine and Ivory Coast internationals. England won't touch Smalling and Jones with a barge pole.

Pretty unanimous as far as I can make out from the responses.

INs
De Ligt/Alderweireld and Wan Bissaka/Meunier

Rodri/Rice and Neves/Fernandes

Sancho and Joao Felix/Lozano

Now all we need to do is make sure the staff at the club see this and get to work....maybe only De Ligt (top level competition) and Rodri (recent signing at Atletico) are unrealistic targets for us. But who knows maybe people like Van Der Sar might even advise De Ligt not to sign for a one of the very best teams like Barcelona or Juventus right now at this point in his career. Always worth a try if there's a chance of obtaining talent that good.

Sell

Defence
Bailly
could still get a decent fee for him
Rojo thought he was to become a good squad player but injuries ruined his chances of becoming a decent player
(special mention to Young he would be just released)

Midfield
Herrera
overrated here
Mata honestly he's a nice guy but he is done at top level, just watching him run is painful

Attack
Lingard
very mediocre player don't even understand how he's been here for so long, never did well for any team he ever played for while he was out on loan
Sanchez he's on 350k a week and I doubt he will make something here

In
I'm gonna try to put realistic options
Defense
Gianluca mancini,
young italian international he would cost around 40 to 50m in todays market
Wan bissaka premier-league proven

Midfield
Doucoure
i rate him high many would say he's a midtable player but think he would be a surprise here
Ruben neves fee would be ridiculous but i believe we can get him
Nicolas pepe even lille president confirmed he will leave in the summer
Jovic amazing player frankfurt will demand 50-60m for him

Defence:
  • Out: Bailly and Young. Bailly can fetch a good price and I don't even like him as a backup. I also pick Bailly over Rojo because Rojo is popular. Young isn't a defender and does more harm than good. I also question if he has any positive effect on the dressing room harmony considering how he is on the pitch (blaming others for his mistakes).
  • In: De Ligt is a very obvious one. We need a right back more than a 2nd CB so I'm going for the popular choice in Wan-Bissaka. Ticks a lot of boxes and there's not a lot of realistic choices to choose from.
Midfield:
  • Out: Matic and Pereira. Matic is done at our level and commands high wages. Pereira mainly because I "had to" pick two and he's our "worst" midfielder.
  • In: Rice has impressed me and fills a role we need filling. Like Wan-Bissaka he comes with the "English bonus". Would be my in be top 3 targets. Don't have many targets in mind for the 2nd midfielder. van De Beek impressed me in the CL. Lo Celso might be the type of player we want. Tielemans could also be something, good purchase by Leicester.
Attack:
  • Out: Sanchez and Lingard. Sanchez is to expensive to keep for what he does. Lingard simply isn't good enough to be playing as much as he does. I think he's out 2nd worst attacker in our squad.
  • In: Sancho plays the exact postion we need and is the one of the most promising players in his position. Eriksen might be attainable considering what we are paying players and the fact that he could fancy something different. I'd prefer a striker but I have a hard time thinking of someone that's attainable.
*I'm leaving out Darmian, Valencia, Mata and Herrera as considerations because of their contracts.

Totally unrealistic ones.

OUT: Young, Valencia
IN: Van Dijk, French right back, played at the world cup and impressed me a lot. Forgot the name.

OUT: Pogba, Mata
IN: Kante, Ajax dude that Barca bought

OUT: Lukaku, Sanchez
IN: Mbappe, Messi

One old and one young player for each position. One proven and ready to take us to the next level and one with immense potential for the future. And it would only cost like 700-900m if they even wanted to come.

This game would genuinely be easier if the rules were that you could keep 2 from each of Defence, Midfield and Attack.

I'm making it three out, two isn't enough.

Out

Defence - Rojo, Bailly & Valencia
Midfield - Mata & Herrera
Forwards - Sanchez, Lukaku, Martial

In

Defence - De Ligt & Wan Bissaka
Midfield - Saul & Rice
Forwards - Sancho & Dybala

Yes, the club will definitely listen to a bunch of randomers on a forum. Why stop there - Messi, Salah, Sterling and Van Dijk too please.

As much as I agree, hasn’t Ole just said that we won’t be signing six players in the summer?

Also, half the players out are on long contracts and big wages or, in some cases, have recently signed extensions.

I would sign a whole new midfield. For long "the cb's can't pass" was the excuse for them. But for how long will we persist with midfielders who can't pass a ball.

It seems that he wants just 4 players. Jones, Smalling and Young extended their contracts.

We need to sort out defence first. Two wingbacks and a centre half, then think about the rest. I really believe that if the defence is sorted we will move up a notch easily.

Defence -
IN - a major centreback like Koubliay and a top right back
OUT - Darmian, Rojo
(Young, Jones, Bailly and one of Smalling/Lindelöf become mere back up)

MID
2 cracking centre mids - whoever the board are monitoring
Herrera, Matic (to backup)

ATT
Sancho, and one top class centre forward
Lukaku, Sanchez
(Martial/Rashford back to rotationals)

Extended contracts means nothing. It just gives the club leverage when it comes to sales.

It's a prioritization system.

Darmian and Rojo need to go first, as they've played about 15 games between them all season.

Young needs relegating to backup, but then you have Bailly who has disappeared.
Smalling/Jones/Lindelöf, could all have shouts for being the man dropped in favour of a new signing too.
