In attack we seem to play or want to play with as less passes as possible so the ball can to the attack quickly. That goes well when we're defending but we still have problems with opponents which defend deep and in numbers. Also sometimes we have a problem setting our rhythm with possession, have a hard time getting the ball back once we lose it. Pressing was good first when he took over but it seems that way of playing has wore us down a bit

Don't think it's the "United way" in forcing posession. If we managed to restrict a team like City or Barca to say 55 percent of the ball we should be fine against currently better opposition. We don't have to dominate the ball to crush most of the Premiership teams. And as far as the last Liverpool City game Pep let them have the ball because he knew he had the more creative team and that the dippers press very well thus leaving them to create something with the ball which they struggled to do. (and leaving them without their greatest asset and that's creating chances by pressing) To be frank Ole's worst game was the Burnley draw where we had plenty of the ball but failed to create anything. In the Wolves game the players just didn't show up. The man is doing tremendous

Whatever about anything else, we now have a manager who understands the standards and traditions and expectations of this club.

I don't know much about Ole's coaching or his methods, only from what I've seen here since he took over in December.
However, I have little doubt he will install the United mentality we've been missing for a number of years now... And sorry but that includes binning anyone not interested, Pogba especially
Well said.

That's false. What do you think throwing the kitchen sink and launching wave after wave of attacks were? Running without the ball? Our great sides had the ability to dictate the pace of the game and pin the opposition back. There's more to our philosophy than waiting on a mistake from the opposition to launch a counter and then play deep.

Yeah, this current Liverpool side are the closest thing to a modern version of the 'United way' or 'SAF football' for me.

It will take a serious, Elite level manager to instill that at Utd now - that might be OGS, but from what we're seeing presently, I don't believe so.

Hopefully I'm wrong.

So apparently we aren't going to 'spend heavily at CB' as OGS is happy with Lindelof, Smalling and Jones for next season. Priority at RB instead of CB.

Questionable if true. Smalling and Jones aren't good enough to be starting if we want to win or even challenge for the league. It certainly explains the two extensions we gave them.
Very questionable source, but if true then we're fecked. How anyone thinks this dross on our back line is good enough to win anything is puzzling. I'd keep one of Jones or Smalling, and sell the other along with Rojo. Bailly I'm not sure on, I go back and forth on keeping him and just kicking him out.

The journo was Duncan Castles IIRC so whilst not the pinnacle of reliability I thought it was worth posting

Anyway it's been deleted now so probably was bollocks. Hope so anyway....

I'd be worried if word was that he's happy with the current CB options as such. That he's happy with those three in particular is something we knew already, and it doesn't prove that he's not looking to strengthen. We won't start next season with just three CBs.

If he's not happy with Rojo and Bailly (which is likely), they need replacing. I doubt he's comfortable with giving two CB berths in the first team squad to recalled/promoted players with little or no experience.

Fair decision with his starting line-up....

1. But seriously if things are not working eg. Young's rubbish delivery from the right, and Lukaku... there is the half-time team talk to adjust, but nope, let it be~~ let it be~~~

Was hoping he could've change the back to something like this:

Dalot -- Young -- Smalling -- Lindelof -- Shaw

So we'll have finally a good attack from our right. I know Lindelof is doing a fine job mainly marking Coutinho, but Coutinho is rubbish today so Young could've done it the same. This will also let Shaw join in attack. Dalot did well on the left when attacking. Young can then do what he can only do nowadays and that is defending.. even if that is questionable recently. Change to this will have a nice balance of attack from our 2 FB.

2. Lukaku out around the 65th min, good change, but could've been done way earlier. We wasted about 20 mins or something seeing Lukaku performing the same way as he did first half -- lack of urgency.

3. Other than that, what's up with the pressing from the front today? disappointing. Rashford, Pogba and McTom are the only ones that did it right. Not Ole's fault though some players doesn't look bother to show up.

4. Why is Young captain again? after his rubbish decision prev game. And do Ole and the rest of the coaches even telling Young to stop with that shit long ball of his.

Nothing wrong with Ole's other decisions though.

That’s obviously bollox. Even if he’s happy with Smalling, Jones and Lindelof you can’t go into a season with just 3 central defenders. Especially when the manager often likes to play three at a time. The fact we’ve seen both Shaw and Young played out of position in the centre in recent weeks tells us all we need to know about what he thinks about our central defensive options.

Regarding CB, I think it's just not his top priority. Obviously if we get the chance for the right player, we'll need to take it, but our midfield options next season are basically:
  • Matic - beyond past it and shouldn't be starting
  • Pogba - probably wants out but will stay next season at least
  • Fred - Nothing all season though has started to look decently and today was encouraging. Potential starter if he can build on it?
  • McTominay - solid younger player and can be a good squad player but I don't think he'll ever really be a top top player or starting 11 quality
  • Pereira - barely a midfielder, a lot more useful in more attacking positions, not good enough to start anyway
5 midfield options basically, and as of now, only 1 of them are really good enough to be starting, 2 of them should only really be squad players as of now, 1 is past it, 1 is just not good enough for his style and the role he'd command at United.
Buying 2 midfielders, loaning out/selling Pereira, is probably what we need since we'll lose Herrera. 2 starting caliber players in midfield.

After that, there is the right wing which is obviously a massive issue which if we get our ideal player, will cost us 100m (Sancho).
After that, at right back, we use a winger who was never quite good enough who got pushed into a fullback position where he lost his best qualities as a winger (his delivery is turd now) and is now 33/34 and beyond past it. Back up to him we have a 19 year old who defensively isn't ready to start at right back consistently, though I guess if we signed a Van Dijk-esque center back then Dalot could develop under less pressure.

Center back I would say our biggest problem is their build up, which you can point to the midfield as sharing the blame. Defensively they're fine, on the ball it's forever our weakness. Needs fixing, might not be able to do everything.

Anyway, on Ole himself, I still maintain he's done a really good job. We've hit a rough patch of form and some really hard fixtures where it was always going to be difficult to maintain a winning run, but we have a shot at the top 4 and hopefully we can pick up our form again and get those results we need to get top 4. I haven't seen much to make me worried about Ole, in fact it's still mostly encouraging. Sometimes you just have to look at the side and just realize that it's a team that is really poorly balanced and has pretty sizable holes at right back, on the right wing, in center mid and partially at center back.

Genius suicide plan today.

Let's play a more open football with just 4 defenders and 3 midfielders but McTom will be way up higher the pitch and just Fred to screen our fantastic defense.
Let's give Messi and the other two attackers many spaces to attack, not a problem since our defense is so good.

Blind loyalty faith/trust to bs players that consistently letting him down eg. Lingard who are in terrible form, and giving armband to Young.

Tbf, he doesn't really have much of better choices with especially the defense and additionally the midfield nor attack. So many players are letting him down in recent many games.

Yet he could still adjust the tactic to suit the team and cover the weaknesses just as he did in the first leg vs Barca which is just effective, and other examples are the PSG games, the tactics there worked, so what if it's boring and defensive.
+ He could've assigned McTom to partner up with Fred as CDM duo and let Pogba and the front three focus on attacking but naah.
+ Give the captain armband to De Gea (if your captain played crap, it's so inspiring, have effects on the others).
+ Lingard bad form recent games, so bench him and play 5 at the back with Dalot providing the ballsy attack and the others to hopefully sneak in goals.

Disappointing, hope he learn much from today.

...Everton ran 8KM more than us. That’s disgraceful. Hard work beats talent when talent doesn’t work hard enough.

Ole feels exactly what us fans do. He’s honest and isn’t trying to sell us some lie. You can tell the team broke his heart today. Players should hold their heads in shame. Ole will draw blood from this, just look at the quote.

Far too many decisions that haven't worked in recent weeks.

Lindelof looks lost as an emergency right-back and it leaves us with two central defenders who lack confidence in possession.

Gave Lingard and Martial the benefit of the doubt after underwhelming performances against West Ham, then they proceeded to contribute almost nothing against Barcelona.

Pereira scored against Southampton, then worked hard in the PSG game. Since then he seems to be a late sub.

Bringing back Matic hasn't worked at all.

De Gea selected ahead of Romero.

Not that I am against it (I am a fan of tough management) but I am genuinely baffled no one has called Ole out for 'throwing his players under the bus'
Jose couldn't make half of the comments Ole has made recently and the caf and pundits would have been all over him for bad man management.

There are things going in his favor as United manager but there are things that people should question without being marked as non supportive with insults on top of it. There is no escape for decisions he made, like including Matic yesterday, playing Dalot on left and Lind on right, while having Jones and Smalling as CBs. Persisting with Young till recent abuse ( shouldnt be condoned ). Jones and Young getting their contracts under him etc.

There is no perfect manager and he will get his summer but he needs to clean the shit out of that squad, people with renewed contracts included, otherwise whats the point. Rather see untainted youth taking their places, even if they aint good enough at the moment but at least they are not on 100k per week doing feck all.

People will say that we cant replace 10-15 players in one go and i agree but we must, if we leave majority of deadwood rot untouched, we will have same old bullshit like in the past, new player comes in, looks great in first few games and then rot kicks in.

I remember people (including myself) had high hopes for Sanchez when he just joined, that his aura of work ethics will rub of others etc. Never happened, regardless of his form and wasting a spot on LW.

José did so ala his cry for financial backing in the transfer window but he didn’t get it. He said what would happen if he didn’t get a CB and other pieces this summer and it came to fruition. It’s just that the team stopped playing for him and it’s easier to fire 1 person than 11. He wasn’t wrong a good chunk of the time when he talked about he lack of quality in the squad.

...what’s Ole supposed to say, great job lads? They’ve been piss poor since PSG. Calling a spade a spade is not throwing under the bus. SAF did that whenever the team needed to be straightened out but he still loved them and tried getting the best out of them and for the players to play for him. No different to what Ole is doing except he’s saying it’s a last chance for a number of them. They just bottled a chance to get top4 CL qualification for next season in embarrassing fashion against Everton ffs.

Got the lineup and tactics wrong. It's clear to me too, pogba wants no 10 or he is sending those signals this like this is what happens when he doesn't play there.

I think matic inclusion was fine but he can not be isolated alone in the middle, he needed support and that aing coming from pogba and fred. Mctominay alongside him in a two made much more sense than pogba and fred on either side of him.

Broke smalling lindelof partnership too and is paying the price of it.

Ole giveth (Top4 hope), Ole taketh away.

On a serious note, I'll always say, his appointment was too soon, there was no reason for Woodward to appoint him during the season when he should have waited till the end of it.

Now that Ole is here, I'll be judging him next season after he's had a decent pre-season and after he's had a transfer window to get red of the players he doesn't fancy and after he's brought some of his targets.

Mate I believe that's your animosity towards him fueled by the patch of bad results and performances that's giving way to some rather delusional way of thinking which you're using to justify you're distaste for him.

We are on the same page. I am all for calling a spade a spade. However, the point I was trying to make is that Jose was crucified for what Ole seems to be doing these days. For Jose, it was 'throwing players under the bus'. For Ole, it's good team management. People suddenly forgot that Jose spent the better part of his time here defending and praising Pogba for instance. Then when he said Pogba needed to do more of what he did at the World Cup, at United, all hell broke loose.

Where is this coming from, he was one of the most hardest working players against Barca despite his position.

Not sure why he has abandoned the diamond formation with wide strikers which has worked so well for us in some previous away games. It was a mistake to remove Lindelof from the centre as he is our best CB. I know some people aren't match fit but I think he should have played someone comfortable at full back such as Darmian or even Young or maybe one of the youngsters at LB so Dalot could play RB but its a tough call with full backs at the moment. The midfield and attack should be played much better yesterday. He picked the players to win the game in those areas but their performance was poor.

On F365 it states that we last won a match playing 3 at the back in 2017.

I love Ole, but that strikes me as a decent trend that maybe he should have thought about.

Needs to become proactive in game management if he wants to succeed. Good start again today but then changes were too late. Why bother bring Sanchez and Martial at 78 minutes not going to turn a 2-0 deficit in 12 minutes.

Playing Fred is a big mistake. Can't understand the faith he seems to have aquired for the player. As a previous poster indicated: absolutely pointless bringing on Sanchez and Martial with 10 mins left of the game. Yesterday he looked clueless. Needs to get off his arse and engage more with the players from the touchline. Which unfortunately I don't believe comes natural too him.
