I think Phelan will be able to do a job. Anyways, the target is to make us the next Arsenal (Wenger's final years one). He should be enough.
Ole as manager, Phelan as DOF, contracts given to Jones and Young, Ole making it clear that there will be few signings being made.....all these decisions lead to the same conclusion ie the club doesn't want to spend money or enter into costly commitments. Maybe the club is set to be sold?

Manchester United are ready to offer Mike Phelan the role of technical director - and promote former midfielder Michael Carrick to assistant manager. (Mail)

Maybe that or as I said the new Arsenal.

I doubt that we'll be attracting lucrative sponsors for long. The big guns can't be bothered being associated with the new Spurs. Its too early to say either way however if we're not spending big money next summer then I think we'll be sold very very soon.

United are in deep shit. The squad isn't good enough, the board is all over the place and we just hired some rookie who failed at Cardiff as manager. The last thing we need is yet another rookie covering a role he has no experience in especially since that someone is rumoured to have been SAF's ball boy.

I have no qualms having Phelan as no 2 but giving him such an important role is silly, especially at a time when the team he's coaching can't stop being humiliated on the pitch. FFS we've picked this guy from a club no one had ever heard about after failing at Norwich and Hull. He should be fighting to justify a contract here rather then asking for a bloody promotion.
Barcelona - Eric Abidal
Ajax - Marc Overmars
Borussia Dortmund - Michael Zorc
Bayern Munich - Hasan Salihamidžić

Look at a lot of the top clubs, look at their sporting directors. Ex-players, even less qualified than someone who’s been an ex-player, an assistant manager, a failing manager and a technical director. I’d rather have him not being a coach, because he’s actually never shown himself to have a team play good football. His reign as number 2 at United, yes we won, but we were consistently saying our football was boring. What he does know is the type of character players need to be at this club. He knows how important improving the youth set up is.

If you don’t want a rookie, who would you want as DoF (realistically, not ‘oh let’s get the June guy in’) Also, look at how Monchi did when he left Sevilla. What’s to say having a DoF, who is used to a different league, different connections, a different culture could just come in and completely rebuild our club?

Most have a solid system in place which means people get properly trained before being promoted. We don't. Our system is in shambles and getting SAF's ball boy whose currently no 2 to a manager who can't seem winning a game ever since he's been made permanent isn't particularly bright especially since his only experience as technical director was at some third rated Australian club no one had ever heard about.

Monchi didn't failed btw. Roma failed and they blamed him

We should got out and buy eleven of the shittest, British players we can find this summer.

They’ll never complain or flirt with clubs who have no interest in them, will run for days after giving the ball away constantly and we’ll win the league.

In a few years. Maybe. After we’ve been relegated a few times.
Nah mate you are wrong we need some propah Brexit lads like rice and Maguire who show pashun and desiah because running around a lot matters more than actually being good :wenger:

Keep on saying SAF’s ball boy, it’s a good one. He was SAF’s assistant manager, a manager who ran the club in totality, Phelan assisted him in his duties. That’s something, it’s not great, but it’s something. He’d also be taking the ‘technical director role’ not the whole director of football. Running the academy, scouts, player recruitment. Things he would have assisted SAF with very closely. If he was put in charge of negotiations etc I’d be a bit more worried as how do we know he had business acumen, but his role now is to be the go-between between manager and Woodward. Making sure we don’t go out and buy Bale.

I’m not fully behind the idea obviously it would be better to get someone with more experience, but again who? And then as I said look at Monchi, he was great at Sevilla and Roma failed him/it wasn’t a good fit. What’s to say we would be?

I don't mind Phelan playing the bridge between the manager and the board. Ultimately the manager and the board should be speaking the same terms if the club got to succeed. Scouting is mostly done by scouts and i'd assume Phelan if given the role would get a first hand briefing of the scouted report. He'd then sit with Ole and talk about the position that requires strengthening. I don't think our technical director has to come with a fancy resume as their job is to mediate between manager and board.

Because that what he was. We had match goers in redcafe whose seats were close to those of SAF's bench and they kind of confirmed that.

However that's not the point. We've brought an assistant manager whom after failing at Hull was rotting in some third rated club in Australia. The manager who brought him was made permanent and after that he can't stop losing. So what do we do? Instead of asking for results while bringing in top people to help him out, we end up promoting his assistant, in a job btw, he's got no experience in. Meanwhile if rumours are true we're also set to promote the coaching staff of the previous failed manager to assistant were we hope he'll help the rookie manager we've signed whose only experience in the EPL as manager is getting kicked out of Cardiff. That's utter crazy in my books.

The only plausible excuse I can make on that regard is that the club might be sold very soon and therefore we wouldn't want to force new employees on high salaries to the new owners. I doubt the likes of Phelan, Carrick and Ole are being paid as top tier people. If that's not the case then we're clearly fecked up big time

Carrick assistant manager, isn't that abit too soon ?
I am surprised he is signing up for it.
I remember him saying something of sort that he wants to be around and learn the trade before jumping into any major role. He doesn't want to jump in and then regret. Being part of the Mourinho disaster season was hardly a good learning.

Hmm. With the way football has and is changing, I hope he knows what he is doing.

My hopes were crushed as soon as the rumours about the club wanting to appoint a technical director/DoF from within surfaced.

Everyone keeps referring to us as the new Arsenal but a better analogy would be the Liverpool of the early 90s as we appoint underqualified people into key positions on the basis of that they were a part of the team in the glory days. It didn't work for Liverpool and it isn't going to work for us.

The club badly needs an injection of new ideas and I'm incredibly sceptical that a nearly 60 year old man, who often talks about the glory days of working under Fergie, is the one to bring them.

This just feels like Woodward appointing someone that he can easily lean on; a puppet who can take all the blame but has very little power.

People who sat near him knew everything he did behind the scenes? Oh yeh now I remember hearing he would turn around a lot during a fair few games and tell fans exactly all of his responsibilities. Specifically, I just pick up balls. Not as stated in the recent interview, assisting with the management of the club as a whole.

You keep failing to answer my question though. Who would you realistically take as technical director? Give me some names. My theory, similar to yours, is there is no one out there right now and his position as technical director would be more interim. Because by the looks of things (availability of experienced TDs) we either promote from within, or we go another season with Woodward being heavily involved in footballing decisions.

Look mate time and time again the same information kept coming around about Phelan. SAF's was the brains, Rene was the one SAF went for a second opinion, Phelan was the workhorse. There's nothing wrong with that. However, that's not even the point. Let me repeat it to you (no patronising here, my English isn't that great). Regarding your question, I would have gone for Paul Mitchell. He's a Manchester lad and he's been in a very similar role at Southampton and at Spurs were he was extremely successful. If Mitchell would have accepted a head of recruitment job then I would have considered adding someone like Campos as DOF as well. Meanwhile I would have kept Phelan as no 2, I would have brought Rene back in a similar role to the one he had with Sir Alex and I would have tried to persuade SAF to accept a vice president role similar to what Nedved has with Juventus. He won't be involved in the daily running at the team. On the other hand he would be a stone throw away to anyone who needs some advice.

Ole NEEDS help. The last thing he needs is people around him, whom, are learning the new job themselves.

Remind me of his popping balloon gif. No one knew what the heck was Mick Phelan's role. The thread on CAF probably still there
Now he's about to become our first Sporting director.

Exactly, and anything is better than Woodward. Even a bar of soap.

This is getting ridiculous. I can’t believe it, but if this ever did happen United would be in serious trouble.

I’ve never known a club go through such an identity crisis. They’ve tried to move forward, beyond the Ferguson era, and are now lurching back appointing random Ferguson disciples.

The next throw of the dice will be letting The Class of ‘92 have the reins, and we all know what total liabilities they’re all proven to be.

I don't think many world class players will have their heads turned by a lunch with Micky Phelan. Might be wrong but this sounds like the kind of bad idea that could only come from Ed Woodward.

What has Carrick, Phelan, Ed done to deserve such positions?

If you want former players, get VDS ffs or atleast have someone who can take us out of this shit. This is like

VDS would be a great choice but the problem is that he would not be a yes man for the Glazers. He might have more interest in making us a better team on the pitch and not be so concentrated on tractor sponsors.

He must be rated by someone in the club, hopefully it's not Fergie suggesting it and he actually does have a vision for the club and the players we need.

Not sure about Phelan or Carrick but Ed was the main guy during the Glazer takeover.. And yes he is currently our director of football. Even though he has not a clue about the game. He will as things stand be directing our transfers during the coming transfer window.

Dont know who is the worse appointment, Phelan or our failing global scout chef. Just appoint someone fitting the job from the outside instead of putting someone partly responsible for the shambles we are in currently

We are looking like a right bunch of idiots, Van der Sar would be a great choice, but our owners see no one better than Woodward, as he is bringing in the cash from sponsors while looking as if he is interested in making the club successful on the pitch, believe me Woodward and the rest of the shit heads have no interest in winning trophies, their interest is in selling shirts. Here is all the proof you need. https://www.manchestereveningnews.c...ews/ed-woodward-manchester-united-can-6373895
