Could replace with someone from that Ajax side, De Jong maybe. For some reason I've got it in my head that it's always a bit cheaper buying Dutch?

Thing is we are so quick to think of potential better replacements! Here’s a lad that gives it all on the pitch for us every single game. There are better players around but how many would get used to the demands of premier league and more importantly being at Utd quickly? It would be madness letting him go imo.

Yesterdays performance was an example.Good first half, second awful and like that all the time.We press in first half and in second just drop deep and counter or teams just let us have the ball and then we have brainless possession with no idea what to do.

Again, why we had a successful run of games.First,Ole came, talk of bringing United way back, secondly first games were Huddersfield,Cardiff,Bournemouth,Reading no more needing to say.Team got a spirit and luck played games against Arsenal,Chelsea Fa cup and so on,won becauese they are average like us and you still question why did we win games then.

He can be replaced by Mctominay as a squad option, growing into that role because and I hope that is what are club are planning because he is not worth of that said sum.
Buy new MC,DM,CB,RB,RW.
Yesterday was his first game in a month after an injury! And guess who is the only player getting praised for his workrate at the end? You guessed it: Herrera. There's literally been an article posted in this thread detailing it. It's like you didn't even watch the game. This is precisely what I mean.

Well the bolded wasn't predictable...
You have a preconceived notion of the type of player you think Ander is, and whenever evidence is given to the contrary, you put your fingers in your ears and put it all down to luck or coincidence.
What sum?

Agree with you.Herrera has his purpose which you said correctly and offers nothing more and we need more from that position.Yesterday Matic was better but after first half our performance was awful compared to the first half.
We press for 45mins and after that just sit deep waiting for counter and dont have a clue how to break up opponent.

Overrating.Herrera has played here for 5 years and never was a first choice midfilder consistently because he misses ability to be a player which makes difference in games.

Matic is a holding player which means you have to have ability to hold the ball and shield it which he did good yesterday but awful recently,Herrera has no ability to do that, so there is no point in comparing them as they play different roles.

We play a defensive, counter football like Van gaal said recently because we have bunch of overrated players with Herrera being one of them, who have no other ability than press and even that he can do for 45mins only.We play counter even against mid table teams.

He can stay as a squad player,no question but nothing more.

He has no ability take a run with ball forward and often does get rid of the ball as soon he receives it by passing sideways,or to the back and when you will see that he takes responsibility and makes a run with a ball forward, almost never.

I agree. He wasnt that way when he first arrived though. However havent you noticed most players come to Utd with certain skillsets and seemingly regress? Remember Kagawa when he first came compared to how was when he first left?

You see only what you want see,in games as in posts.
But so on,we had a good first half pressing but what you cant simply understand our second was awful because we only press good and thats it.And then our quality with the ball,in possession shows its face in our midfields inability to make a play and that is to Herrera,Matic...

Chelsea was happy enough with a draw and they just played safe.We just drop deep and counter or have meaningless possession with no clue how to make play. Also he didnt track back Alonso for goal conceded and make a stupid tackle and got a yellow.

Also go to stats and see how many unsuccessful tackles he made or how many attempted tackles with players leaving him like a headless chicken running around.Did you compare stats for Modric or Arthur for what I have said in earlier posts about sideways or through ball and saw that in some cases stats dont tell true story of player capability or how it correlates to some style of plays.

I have watched every United game for years now and I watch from a critical standpoint for any player and for me he is just a mediocre player because of his natural ability to play football but with more passion for football and brain than our other mediocre players.

Having in mind all said and him being 30 this summer, let him stay for a squad player role for example max 3 years and max 120k wage or just release him and let Mctominay play his part as squad player role and get a better player for first team.

Yes,he was a better player then,of course younger and his best attribute energy was even more expressed in play but for me,my opinion, never was good enough for our first team but brings passion and is a smart person it seems.
Our recruitment was really awful through the years,no real plan of how we want to play, changing fomations, style of play bringing players who fit one style and playing them in completely different style of play.

And of course some managers prefer some players, some not, or injuries and so many conclusion can be made and we are not the only club who faced these things but in recent times we are the worse for certainly in how much money we have spent and what results we achieved.

The fact that so many fans are up in arms over Ander Herrera just shows the depths of medicocrity we have have started to sink into, and accept.

He really is nothing special as a player, never has been, and never will be. He talks a good game, runs about a lot with not a great deal of end product; but the reality is, he will soon be forgotten; he will never be world class, or anyhwhere near it, and those that rave about him need to stop watching YouTube clips. Watch him live, and then understand he is very average.

I do agree with the fact that giving Jones a new 4 year (5 with extension) contract (Jones should be nowhere near a club like United, but again this is yet more proof of the mediocrity we have come to accept), and Young an extension whereas letting Herrera on a free is lunacy, but the bottom line is none of our players we would miss currently (De Gea aside after a rest, who has literally been carrying Manchester United for 7 years).

When you "we", you mean the fans or the club? Because fans tend to look for the shining behind the clouds. If we have 3 crap players and one ok-ish player and we let the 3 crap stay (because no one else will take them) and ok-ish go, then the fans will be up in arms.

While he might not be the best in the world, he's a good player and fairly consistent. Right now we don't have anybody more rounded in midfield so we'd prefer to keep him.

Unless we can replace him this summer but I wouldn't have faith.

Fully agree with this. What is so disappointing about Herrera potentially leaving is not that we would be losing a world class player, but rather that there are +10 players that we should get rid of before him. Herrera, while not exceptional, is actually useful and letting him go just means we have to go out and get an additional midfielder. I would rather we keep him and focus our attention on bringing in a right-back and attacking players with quality.

I get where you're coming from but at this point I say let those who want to leave, leave. Too many unhappy faces around and it's become epidemic.
As long as we get good money and replace them with players who'll be excited to be part of a MUFC ressurgence, I'm good with it. It's frustrating to lose a good player among all the dross we have right now but the less we hang on to anyone who's been a part of this dark period the better.

Great post. You'd swear he's a world beater if you read the caf and never watched him play

He's the one of the very few playerd at the club with anything resembling the mentality required to be successful.

If you've not noticed the depths of mediocrity we've fallen, or need further proof, then you've not been paying attention for the last 5 years. Ironically Herrera would work well for us in a better squad.

Like I said a story of his United career. He's always injured
We don't even know the nature of or severity of his latest injury, and Ole even said the player doesn't know himself, and that maybe speculation over his future caused the injury.

Solskjaer said: “Maybe the future might have been worrying him and that’s part of the reason he’s injured. Who knows? He doesn’t know.

“Hopefully he can be available for Chelsea or City but I’m not sure. He got another muscle injury.

Mentality does not equal ability on the pitch. I could have the mentality to climb everest, but it by no way means I have the physical capabilities to do so. And yes, I have been paying attention, hence my post. I just don't fall for the excuses branded about that players 'needing better players around them' to perform. If that is now the logic, then any one of us could play in a team full of world class players, and be carried by the team, have more time on the ball, and look more useful - and that is really what is being suggested.

Pogba gets afforded the same excuses: 'needs better players around him', it is utter nonsense, in my opinion of course; and I have watched this club for over 30+ years, and for over a decade in the flesh at OT. All about opinions though I suppose.

What we are really doing here is filtering the dross, and in any accumulation of dross, some strands of potential will stand out more than others, but when you compare the stand-outs (in football terms) to our teams of the past, or more importantly, what we are competing against right now, and in the future (and what we need to compete against to get back to winning ways against substantially stronger teams) then we are a million miles off, and will continue to be so unless we aim higher than we have for the last 7 years.

It's like now that John O'shea has retired, and the thread about him being a 'legend', My OT seats were bang on where he played at right back, and he was as average as they come, nervous on the ball, and was a squad player at best; but because we are now absolute garbage at the moment, our memories are being discoloured with sentiment, and that is also a dangerous sign moving forward.

We are now 7 years in - 7 fecking years that have flown past, and when you think about the players we have had during that time, and some of the football we have been playing, then unless we vastly lift our expectations, we are so close to being in danger of what Liverpool became for the last 25 years. We'll get left behind, and just live on memories.

I cannot remember once this season that the fans have sung "20 times, 20 times..." at OT, because even that is getting to the point of being cringe-worthy considering our current climate of deminishing identity as a club.

We need to aim higher in all areas.

I think Herrera was slightly out of his depth at Manchester United. He was clearly a very good player for La Liga in his hometown club of Bilbao, but nothing he has done so far hints at world class potential.

At PSG he will probably find himself on the bench more often than not. He is good and United should keep him but not if he's asking for Pogba money.

I am sure he ain't asking for pogba money, although he works his a** off for the team and adapts to what ever role he is asked to play, although his strenghts always lied in high press in oppositions box and that's where his passing can get dangerous too, but managers have used him so differently than where his strengths lied, but he does what ever asked for, and its fair he would like to be appreciated for that.

I think the club an him will reach a deal in the end and he stays.

The problem people have with letting him go is not him being world class, it's the other options being worse.

It's clearly a case of them not seeing eye to eye as for what his value is. He really is one of the few who has always respected the club on the pitch.

But it's such a weird situation because the club has given new contracts to players who the fans hate

Not sure how world class potential is a yardstick when it comes to the current United side.

He would not be good enough to start if United were anywhere near where they should be (challenging for the biggest trophies). At the current state of the side, Ander is sadly one of United's better players.

I have to laugh at some of the posters on here, for the last 3 years Herrera was one of the most consistent players who always gave his all. Now when he has looked for more money is crap. No one know how much he was on and how much he's looking for. The club has given contracts to players who have been an embarrassment over the last few years and now all of a sudden they won't pay Herrera. It's no consequence that when he was injured our form has collapsed.

I believe Mctomminay can be a player similar to Herrera in two or three more seasons but the club can't afford to wait that long for youth development.

By the way, the club could at least try to make a swap deal, Verratti for Herrera.

How? He’s out of contract in a few weeks.

What a bizarre suggestion.
