"You and your paper can feck off."
I think if Atsu misses or the ball lands in a way where Newcastle can’t directly score then he gives the red and a penalty.

He has to disallow a perfectly good goal to give a red/penalty based on how the play turned out.
Luckily all this will be cleared up at the referee's post match interview where he has to explain his decisions.

Treble season vs Barca. Butt gets sent off for the exact same offence and the Barca goal is ruled out and they are given a penalty and red card.

Cant stand Carragher commentating on Liverpool matches. Everything they do is "fantastic" or "brilliant".

Because back then you couldn't play advantage for a red card offence... Now you can.

If Liverpool don't win the league this year, I really don't think they ever will. They're never going to have as much luck in a single season ever again.

It's just been an endless parade of dodgy penalties, offside goals, deflections sailing into the top corner and oppo keepers deciding to gift them goals.

All they need is for next week's winner to go in off Pepe Reina's beachball for a full house.

I am actually starting to feel some dread about Liverpool getting this now. Not had it for a long time since I have mainly been focused on us and don't want City to win either.

Liverpool certainly can't complain about the ref in this game. He's been great for them.

But because the referee allowed the play to continue and Atsu to score no goal was prevented.

You can’t give a red card for denying a goal scoring opportunity when the goal was scored anyway.
I'll take your word for it as I'm unclear on this ruling, but you have to consider that the handball directly affected the resulting goal.

He literally teed up Atsu to finish with the use of his arm.

I'm really confused about this one

I know it was a different competition, (and 20 years ago) but anyone else remember Nicky Butt being given a straight red for handball in one of the Barca 3-3 draws? Even though the ball went in.

The only explanation I can think of in this instance is that the ref just didn’t see it.

Rondon is one of the least threatening strikers I've ever seen.

The commentary team is on fire today on NBC. I don't usually mind them but there's some bizarre stuff in there.

I just think personally it looks problematic for the English league to have two sides near 100 points and the league hasn't won the CL in 7 years and counting. Just not a good look for the overall league.
Or it could be a testament to just how tough the league is. Get 90+ points but it grinds you down by the time the late stages of the CL roll around

You've got to admit that Arsenal, Chelsea, ourselves and most of the mid-table clubs have been disappointing this season. And Spurs are spread super thin. The league could be a lot better than it currently is. I think City and Liverpool are playing great football, coupled with having a pretty pedestrian league at the moment, which results in them getting close to 100 points.

They set the tone when right at kick off one of the commentators was comparing Liverpool's defence to Brienne of Tarth and then referred to Perez as Ayoze Stark

It actually goes to show how shit City and Pep have been in Europe.

I wonder in a situation like that, the attacking team should be allowed to decide whether they want the goal, or a red + penalty?

Maybe the captain/manager can make a call or something

Apparently it should’ve been a yellow for deliberate handball, but because Atsu scored no goal was prevented for Newcastle.

Confusing as hell.

I can understand when a yellow card offence is held up for advantage, but when an issue that would definitely be a sending off happens, surely you have to pull it back.

I just saw the replay of Newcastle's equalizer.

How is TAA still on the field?

Bizarre.
If you score a goal, it's a goal, unless the whistle has gone.

I always remember Chelsea being bitter at that supposed "ghost goal" v Liverpool.
They refuse to put the context in, that otherwise it'd have been a red card, and a pen, so it actually helped them being given as a goal!

From FIFA:

"If the referee plays the advantage for an offence for which a caution / send off would have been issued had play been stopped, this caution / send off must be issued when the ball is next out of play, except for the denial of an obvious goal-scoring opportunity when the player is cautioned for unsporting behaviour.

Advantage should not be applied in situations involving serious foul play, violent conduct or a second cautionable offence unless there is a clear opportunity to score a goal. The referee must send off the player when the ball is next out of play but if the player plays the ball or challenges/interferes with an opponent, the referee will stop play, send off the player and restart with an indirect free kick, unless the player committed a more serious offence."
