He says at the end recruiting an ex player (Rio) for DoF would be a shambles .

He’s right, there’s no structure or clue to our recruitment strategy either on the pitch or in the back room staff, it’s no wonder we’re in this state.

Agree with pretty much every word. The sad thing is that it really isn't rocket science.

For these reasons, I cannot expect Ole to perform miracles next season. He needs a good structure above him and some backing in the transfer window.

Well said Gary. I knew he was getting emotional when his voice went higher. Can't argue with what he says. I think they are going from splurging money to doing it on the cheap. A cheaper manager and cheaper people working round him. When if they had just got a experienced DOF of football after SAF left, we may not have gone through so many managers as we might have got the transfers right in the first place.

Gospel.

Bit about the coaches who bleed the club made me emotional. Deserve better.

He's right about so much and even admits he won't criticize the manager anyway. So that helps to set up the routine of dancing around Ole's qualifications.

But I still think he gets it slightly wrong at the end when he says the starting point is players who want to be there. The starting point is a footballing philosophy beyond grit, determination and workrate. You start with a clear modern philosophy and then you find players who fit that and will give maximum effort.

Saying what we all know...but what's the solution. Who can run this football club properly set the right tone for it. Set the right attitude for the entire club from kit manager through to head coach/manager.

Only personified think is qualified is SAF but that's a step backwards and most of the time doesnt work.

How can anyone have a strong dislike for the man is a bit strange to me since you can see how much he loves the club.

Oh, and he absolutely nailed it here.

Wrong. No point in having a philosophy if you have players there who don’t buy into it or don’t fit it. Get rid of players like Sanchez, Rojo, Jones etc and go out and get players who fit the philosophy.

No point keeping guys around who are working against you

He's spot on about the structural changes at the club. Absolutely spot on and the bizarre thing is, everyone bar our suits would agree.

He's talking absolute bollocks about the manager having absolute backing in the transfer market.

He's absolutely spot on about the likes of fletch and Rio being offered the top jobs. It's a joke.

Nah just another rant that comes down to Mourinho excuses
It’s not just a rant though is it? Everything he says is delivered from the POV of a passionate Utd fan. But it’s not knee jerk, it’s measured and targeted

For what it's worth I think problem is in who were selecting as leaders regards playing staff.

If your best player has the right attitude it runs off kn everyone. If your best player has the wrong attitude it rots the dressing room.

Imo to fix this we need to sign someone who's better than PP but has got a.) Massive obsession with winning b.) Excellent attitude towards football (I.e. training, preparation, application and effort on a match day) and c.) also has a good understanding of how to conduct themselves off the field respecting the football institution who they are representing.

If we can then repeat that across each department. Defence/ midfield/attack I think we'll be half way to fixing the dressing room issue

And that's what I think the DoF should be charged with. Ensuring that continually our best players in each department have that mentality.

That then makes the coaches job easier and makes it more difficult for those not pulling their weight to thrive

This is 100% correct. Is a director of football or technical Director just a glorified title for scout or talent spotter. Most companies who employ Directors do so with the best possible candidate. What qualifications does Rio have? i want the best for the club so in essence we should have the best possible candidate at the helm.

Its a rant. I'm not saying none of it is right, but eventually it all comes back to him saying it wasnt Mourinho's fault and that he should have left if United didnt want to sign his players, as if Jose hadnt already signed 11 players for huge money and if there was still lots of work to do then clearly his signings were wastes of money.

After his Mourinho backing... I can’t take him serious. But I agree, I don’t like the players. Funny thing is though, this squad is Mr Mourinho’s.

But he has been consistent on this, he hasn't suddenly changed his mind.

He stated last year that by employing someone like him, you need to back him and follow his ideas. That's what you sign up for. On one hand he brought his own downfall by his behaviour and Neville addresses this but on the other, the club didn't follow this 100%. I can see this. He never absolves Jose for his failings but levels criticism at Utd for the way they have carried on, their structure etc.

It's what many posters have stated on here, I don't see how it's anything to criticise him for

We need someone from a Bayern/Ajax/Barca background to come and provide structure to the club in a systematic way.

Wrong. There is no point buying players who bleed red and then jamming them into whatever the footballing philosophy happens to be. That's idiotic. You build a way of playing which will naturally attract players to that style. Then you do the homework to select the ones with the right attitude. If you're shopping for players that want to be at Manchester United, you'll be in the bargain bin most of the time.

ABSOLUTELY SPOT ON GAZ, everything he says is spot on, club is riddled with clowns that need shipping out. Just look at the last few hours:

Sky: City close to Rodri/Felix/Bruno Fernandes - All in talks, all done under the carpet, could be 3 massive signings and the season not even finished.

United - Linked with a Norwich defender, Swansea RW, 2 Turkish lads from some random club, Bale & Kroos and 90m Maguire - Absolutely clueless no process no plan.

Seriously worrying times we could fall an absolute mile behind, 7 years Woodward has been doing this, how are there no protests against him on a weekly basis, club is an absolute state.

I don't know anymore. Gary Neville is very passionate and articulate, and he obviously holds a special place in the hearts of United fans. I've personally always found myself agreeing with him on many occasions. But at the end of the day it's easier being a pundit than it is being in the shoes of the Manager or Head of a football club, isn't it...

Between Neville, the Caf and all the other TV personalities United's lack of performances have been attributed to pretty much every reason under the sun - it's the manager, it's Woodward, it's the Glazers, it's the structure, it's the players, it's the culture.

At some point you've got to admit to yourself honestly that it's all just conjecture and ranting, that none of us outside of the club (including Neville) actually *truly* know what the root cause of the problem is.

In everything that Gary said, the only thing which I thought was truly truly insightful and actionable - there are 5 people in charge of the footballing and recruiting decisions at Man Utd. These 5 people all came in with different managers and stayed on when said Manager was let go. No successful organisation (in football or elsewhere) has so many decision makers with such overlapping responsibilities and accountability.

That's the only thing I'd change. Streamline the decision making. Oh and get rid of Young.

Agree. As soon as you start disagreeing with the manager about who he wants and basically saying you know better, you are on a hiding to nothing.

That's not what he's saying at all. He's questioning the structure of the club and (as there are no football people responsible for building the playing squad) who is qualified to question or veto signings the manager wants.

It's an extremely valid question. When you have a transfer strategy that seems no more than getting a list of players from the manager just before every transfer window then you need to back the manager's judgement or get a new manager who you will back.

If you decide that isn't the optimum structure (which it clearly isn't based on the shambolic playing squad) and you want to change that recruitment strategy then doing nothing about it for 12 months may not be the best plan.
