what kind of player is he? Please tell me he works hard at least.
He’s a bit like Bernardo Silva playing centrally I’d say. A 10/8 hybrid. He works hard and has great dribbling.

There are only a few Italian footballers worth buying at the moment and Pellegrini isn't one of them.

He's a trequartista (no 10?) but he can play in a deeper role (mezzala). At 30m he's value for money however unless we're selling Pogba I doubt we really need him. If we get Dybala and Pellegrini then I suspect we'll moving to a narrow 4-3-2-1 system

What I have seen of him he looks really tidy and composed. He has great close control and very good technique. Passing range is a bit of an enigma as he seems to want to pass and move more than drive long range passes.
That said don´t know how he would handle the higher intensity of the PL.. But for 30m it´s an no brainer.
Makes far to much sense to happen.
You could be describing Fred there. Apart from the price tag.

Don't mean to derail the thread too much but who would be the Italian footballers worth buying? It seems there's an exciting generation emerging (Chiesa, Tonali, Zainolo, Pellegrini, Barella, Romagnoli etc.) Are you Italian? Why isn't Pellegrini worth buying?

From little I've seen him at Roma he plays as the furthest of the 3 midfielders and is more hardworking, less talented Pogba...

Reading a novel in the class of '92
Now watch other clubs being interested as well not this report of United contacting him is public. Could Bruno Fernandes have been a smoke screen for Pelligrini? Unlikely in my opinion. Could also have been a plan B.

Looks tidy but nothing worldie. Would rather have Ceballos who's another tidy player but with much more bite.

Watched him vs Inter and he didn't really stand out. Got crowded out quite easily.

Would not mind buying all 5.

Zonali £40m-£50m - After Felix and Sancho he would be the next big talent to go after. His abilities are better suited as a midfielder, and if he could transition into a CM fulltime he could become really good.
Barella £40m - Balanced player. Can do most thing. Would fit most managers and systems.
Pellegrini £25m - Cheap, better than many of our current options, similar to Barella he can do most elements, but he is not as good technically as him, and would rather have Barella.
Tonali and Sensi seem more like Pirlo, and more specialized, but Tonali is still young and could improve. Sensi is a cheap player if we want a "spielfuhrer".
I didn't think Tonali is a specialist. He can also play as no 8 and is much more mobile than Pirlo. His pace looks deceptive too.

Sensi looks like Jorginho than Pirlo.

I would have Tonali out of them all.

His compilation highlight doesn't look impressive too. He looks tidy but nothing else. Also, I'm not impressed by his movement. He seems to move slowly or stand still after passing to a teammate instead of opening up space with his movement. He gives me Cleverley kind of vibe.

I would rather have Ceballos from Madrid.

Both Tonali and Sensi are clearly more suited in a team dominant in possession, and Tonali is not that fast. Got a quick step, but thats it. His quick decisionmaking and able to see potential passes (all ranges) is what makes him very attractive as a footballer. If he is given time and space on the ball, then his view and understanding of the game would come to fruition. So in certain teams he could be great.

Barella is the most ready and most balanced player of them. So he would be the one i pick first.
Zaniolo, based on his mix of physique, mobility and ability would be the next. He is wasted on the wings, reposition him as a midfielder and he could become one of the best in the world.
IF the club wants to play possessionbased football in the future then Tonali could become an important starter given time and developement.

I like him. He’s a good price, profile and age. We will get what we paid for him in two years again if it doesn’t work out and we don’t for some reason give him 200k off the bat
That sounds a bit low for us to be honest.

He looks a tidy enough passer but I'd be worried his movement wouldn't be sharp enough, and we need another relatively static player like we need a hole in the head. That said, looks decent and won't cost an absolute bomb, it would make a nice change to bring a player in for moderate money and have his price tag rise than the other way around.

Enormous pace isn't the requirement of a playmaker. Modric, Silva, Xavi don't have enormous pace yet it doesn't stop them. Tonali actually looks to be mobile just like the aforementioned and even loves to roam about the pitch than sit deep.
He's hardly given space on the pitch but tends to create his own space through his technique, movement and positioning. His vision and switching of play look terrific too. He looks class apart from the other players mentioned. Tonali doesn't even need to operate in a possession based setup (although that would help his game) because he's a player who makes the play happen whether in a possession based setup or a counter attacking setup. He's the brain of Brescia's play.

Sensi on the other hand looks like a recycler such as Jorginho, Busquet etc. They help to build up the play and help in the control of the midfield but are not really playmakers who make things happen and dictate the show.

I really don't fancy Barella though. He looks erratic to me and looks more of a runner than a playmaker. He's certainly a box-box midfielder.

Zaniolo is an attacking midfielder.

He's not a Fred
Just watched his youtube video, I'm sorry, but he looks like a carbon copy on Ander Herrera. Doesn't matter anyway, we don't have a klopp or a pep or even a Poch to coach him to become better. We could buy anyone and look the same.

Not saying you need to be Kante to play as a playmaker, still think that Tonali would suit best in a possessiondominant team. His vision, quick decisions and passing with both feet makes him really attractive for a team aiming to control the game (Don't see us doing this under the current management, therefore he would not be suited to play for us).

Barella got few weaknesses, can run, press and pass. Suited to most systems, maybe except parking the bus and defending crosses.

Zaniolo has played multiple positions/operated all over the pitch for Roma. My proposal is to use him as a midfielder, since he would be physicaly dominant, can handle the ball and pass, can defend and with some improvement in regards to playing at a higher intensity... Could dominate most opponents, and one would need more than one player on him to stop him. Additionally, before Ranieri arrived in Italy, he was the main attacking outlet for Roma in a number of games.

He really is not. He's an offensive player ie a trequartista (no 10) or maximum a mezzala. His main attributes are his dribbling, his pace and his vision. His weaknesses are his workrate (he's not a lazy player but he lacks the work rate needed for a box 2 box) and he might commit mistakes when under pressure which explains why he prefers playing further up pitch.

He reminds me more of Ryan Giggs in CM tbh rather then Herrera

Not to be a downer, but Italians in the past 20 years really don’t seem to settle into England. Are we sure he’s not going to just be another letdown?

Jorginho was highly rated last year yet at Chelsea, he looks so fecking lost. It might be their style of play but he was bought in by his old manager.

Very underwhelming youtube compilation video. And everyone looks world class on youtube, not sold on him. We've got enough mediocre players already.

Of that list I would only want Romagnoli at United.

Italy used to produced a huge number of great footballers relative to their population but those days are long over. They haven't won a major competition at youth level in 15 years and serie A has been low quality for a long time with only Juventus having a consistently strong side. Consequently when Italian players move abroad to a stronger league like the PL they struggle. Think of Balotelli, Darmian, Zappacosta, Jorginho, Aquilani... none of them have been able to reproduce their serie A form in England. You also have Immobile who flopped at Dortmund, Cersi who flopped at Atletico. The few success stories have come when they have moved to an equally weak league (Veratti, Motta and Balotelli in France).

Basically a player really has to stand out in a league like serie A for me to want him at United and Pellegrini just doesn't. He's not bad, he's very creative in his passing, he works hard for an attacking player and he's still young. But I could name 10 equally attainable midfielders off the top of my head who would offer United more.

I'm not Italian but I grew up watching serie A. Back then it was fantastic and every Sunday I could watch the best players in the world playing against each other on channel 4. I will always like the clubs, the kits, the old and dilapidated stadiums, more than any other league except England, but the quality in the players just isn't there right now.

I have this funny feeling that we're moving to a narrow 4-3-2-1 system, which will do away from our flank men altogether. In that case, someone like Pellegrini (good technique, fast, relatively hardworking for an offensive player and not very expensive) might make sense.

Probably better of chancing a maddison or Brooks instead of risky Italian. Thought we were going back to utd way, which would consist of buying British core .
