Has Ole given up on next season already?

So the main thing to be gleaned from manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's latest utterances is that challenging for the Premier League title next season would be "a miraculous season".

Then there was his pre-Huddersfield top six warning, saying a title challenge is "not realistic" next term - "you don't suddenly catch 27 points in one season" and then adding: "You've got Leicester, Everton, Watford, probably Newcastle, you've got clubs that want to chase us."

It would be easy to draw lazy comparisons to the negativity of David Moyes. Except Ole is not a negative person, albeit like Moyes he has not won anything as a manager. However, remember unlike Moyes he was a winner as a player. Big time.

His demeanour lately has been a smile, a nod and a wink, as if the Norwegian knows his targets. He has his game plan of bringing in younger players "who will stay at the club" coupled with bigger names (are there going to be any) many of which he hopes to get over the line, it seems before the start of July. Good luck on that.

It is good news in terms of stability to get Phelan in, and it seems clear that the idea of a director of football is still not something that is imminent, which means, unfortunately we have Ed Woodward still orchestrating things, and that might be a problem.

On the positive side, we are at last seem to be going about our work in terms of next season early, unlike the shambles of previous season. The big question is are the players we are bringing in going to be good enough for a club like United, when top players will be looking at even Spurs before United for next season.

There are players who are not the biggest stars who, I think, would walk into our team now. Diop of West Ham, for one. Doucoure of Watford, for two. And they would not be overpriced for the talent like Maguire would be.

I think he sees next season as transitional, that appears to be the road he is going down. That there will be big changes and we will see a different, perhaps less experienced United. If we cannot attract as many of the big name players now, we have to look at players who could develop into stars and stay.

Ole says Ronaldo and Rooney were not ready made stars when they arrived at Old Trafford. But neither did they stay.

So are we going to remain a feeder club for Real?

I am on the fence with it all. Ole HAS to be given a chance now to implement his strategy with Phelan. The question is that will he be given the tools to do the job. And has he got enough about him to be the manager we all want him to be?

I would have been a lot happier if the long touted director of football actually materialised and that Ed Woodward's hands were off the football side. But no. That has not happened. Why?

Ole has said that the strategy has effectively been him and Phelan discussing with Woodward.

Sunday will effectively be the start of it all, with a couple of our young players starting against what is a meaningless match against Cardiff. My money is on Chong, for sure and Mason Greenwood.

It may be meaningless in terms of the Prem, however, it may well speak volumes about the direction of the club going forward under Ole and Phelan.

I may have my doubts as all United fans will to a greater or lesser extent, but we have to give this new stage in United's history a chance.

What are you on about Rooney and Ole didnt stay? Ole retired injured here and Rooney was sold to Everton by the club wanting him out, as he stunk the place up for the last 2-3 seasons. Only Ronaldo left when we wanted him to stay.
As for the rest, he already said he has agreed a 3 year plan to get us challenging. Hes telling the truth and hedging his bets at the same time. If he finishes 5/6th next season, but has improved the football, got the team playing as a team instead of like a bunch of strangers, thats a step in the right direction. If he does get top 4 then hes ahead of the game. It would be a miracle and he would be one of the best managers ever if we were challenging for the title.

We are signing some dude called James who should be going to Leeds. Yes he’s given up and once again the club is backing a dud.

Like the rest of us, he can’t set any targets until he sees what the club manage to bring in during the Summer and how fast these new players can settle.

Even if everything goes his way, 27 points is a huge amount to make up, he’s not wrong there.

No he has not ‘given up’.

What he has done is point out certain realities some of our more entitled supporters seem unwilling or unable to grasp.

They simply can’t handle the truth that the glory days are over and it’s going to take time, effort and luck before they return.

Next season we should be top four and we should play better football.

The year after we should challenge for the title.

Simple.

It is possibly too easy to confuse negativity with realism. Personally I will wait and see which one Ole is showing at the moment. I think he is being realistic. I would have thought it is obvious that we are not suddenly going from where we are now, which is a bit of a shambles of misfits/aging players, to tiltle challengers by making changes of 5/6 players in one close season. This should have been done in a progressive way ever since SAF left but we all know why it didn't happen this way.

Except he has won things as a manager. 2 league titles and a cup.

I think he is lowering expectations and rightly so. Leicester improved by 40 points in one season, so it’s not impossible, but we’re along way behind the top 2, not just in points but in style. No matter how many signings, we may make this summer, I don’t think we’ll get 90+ points next season.

Has he given up on next season, No. He’s a realist, he knows the budget he has to work with, he knows the limitations of the current squad. It’s a long road back to the top.

We are going to finish 30pts behind the top 2. We've not got a cat in hell's chance of winning the title. If it was just 1 team up there then there's always a chance as that team could have an off year. However what are the odds of both City and Liverpool having an off year next season?

Ole is absolutely bang on and our fans need to get their heads out of their backsides. We're Manchester United in only name. This squad is a million miles of being title winners.

Lower your expectations boys. The journey back to the top won't be smooth.

The word 'says' should have been inserted after Ole.

Did anyone expect us to be title challengers next year? Wow. If he had claimed we were, I'd be a lot more worried because that would be proof he's not in touch with the real world.

I don't think we have. I think fans would take a place in the Top 4 now, and I sense that that may well be what Woodward will be wanting, because much of the money we get from sponsorship contracts are predicated on Champions League football.

Catching up to two teams who have dropped 16/17 points all season isn’t exactly realistic even if we made all the perfect signings and the players instantly grasped Ole’s style of football. Some fans really need to wake up.

I don't see why the sudden change in the narrative.

When he was the caretaker, he talked so high of us. We should be on top, we should be aiming for the league etc etc and now when he got the job, he lowers the expectations in every interview.

He ain't wrong but this is becoming a general pattern. Play well until new contract and then fall flat.

Really until he knows which signings he actually gets and which players actually stay at the club he should not be making comments like that. It puts us on a downer straight away.

The man is being realistic, fans jumping down his throat over it. At what right do we have to sign anyone we want. have people ever thought that players might not want to come to united?

We are in a rebuilding process and I am all for getting in young talent who will run through walls for the club, trying to get galacticos have not worked and the club need to try a different approach. Watching players grow with the club and becoming successful will be so much sweeter and give us more bragging rights as it has in the past.

In Olly i trust he cares about the club and has the fans and the club in his best interest, not his ego. It is going to take years and years and for fans who don't like that, I suggest supporting someone else or start getting realistic.

I'm okay with top four next season provided we show signs of progress.
You win the prize for most sensible comment I have read on here today. This, i sense, is all the most rational, intelligent United fans could really hope for. Anything else, like a Europa League win would be a mindblowing bonus.

Here’s a tip Ole, rather than come out with negative shit like this, don’t say anything at all.

He so desperately wants to be the next Fergie. But guess what, SAF would never have written a whole season before the previous one has even finished.

Solskjær is sounding more and more like Moyes with every passing week.

Moyes, Another manager that knew he was completely out of his depth and was trying to mask his inadequacies by lowering expectation levels.

This. Completely boggles my mind when people think we should be challenging for the title with this team plus a few new faces.

Jose said it and now Ole has said it (not sure if LvG said it) but they need 2-3 seasons because the squad needs rebuilding.

Christ on a cracker! Embarrassing!

The narrative hasn't changed, he still believes and more importantly wants to challenge / win titles.

He's just saying it will take time, we aren't going to go from 29pts from Champions to champions.

In the last 5 seasons we've finished

  • 17pts from Champions
  • 15pts from Champions
  • 24pts from Champions
  • 19pts from Champions
  • 29pts from Champions (it will be more tomorrow evening)
Avg of 20pts from Champions

We've literally seen the gap to PL Champs double under Jose's tenure, but folks bemoan the LVG era?

Anyway, Ole needs to close an avg 20pt gap and then increase it, realistically we need to win an extra 25-30pts if City's form continues as has.

Exactly. It is all about momentum in the League. Liverpool, in fairness, have developed a top squad now over a few years with astute signings. Not players who were playing at the very top level. You would say only really Alisson and Salah both from a decent Roma and Fabinho in a decent Monaco side were. Van Dijk was with a struggling Southampton side, Mane too. Suarez was with Ajax who were not the side they are now. Jordan Henderson is another player who has developed. Wijnaldum from a struggling Newcastle side. Andy Robertson was from HULL FFS, Alexander Arnold came through as a young player. You get the idea.

I would have no problem going down the template Liverpool have gone done to get back to the top. Otherwise we will spend many more years in the wilderness like Liverpool. I would be happy, however, with a director of football.

You don't have a clue who James is or how good he is.

You have no idea what the plan is for him next season or how it effects the rest of our summer transfer dealings.

Stop moaning about everything.

Most of you are reading too much into this.

We have a long way to go before we can start competing for the big prizes, the club needs a complete reshuffle from top to bottom. At the least, we all know that Ole will put the interests of the club first and foremost.

Don’t see anything wrong with his comments, you lot are just looking for an excuse to jump on the “ole out” bandwagon. Give the man a transfer window and a full season before making any comments. If we don’t see progress being made towards a cohesive style of football on the pitch and it still seems like a mismatch of ideas and a lack of direction, then by all means be negative nancys.

This summer is insanely key, a lot will depend on what personnel we get in and who we move out.

Exactly. We were sort of laughing at them when they signed Wijnaldum, Milner, Matip on a free and spent so much on Salah when we were signing the likes of Depay, Pogba, Sanchez and Mikhitaryan. Buying names doesn't build a team, buying the right players who fit together does.

Seem to remember when things were going swimmingly and we were winning, Solskjaer was praising all the players, saying they were a joy to work with! What happened?

I would like to believe that he has not but if he did then I am not sure what he is still doing here. No one is expecting us to challenge for anything but the least we can hope is some watchable football and TOP 4. Is it too much to ask? Instead we seem to be worried about Everton, Leicester and Watford.

I don't know if he's 'given up', but the lowering of expectations have begun.

Top 4 is a must. The talk of Watford, Everton and Leicester potentially chasing/catching us is nonsense. If he wasn't a United legend, he would be crucified for those comments.
