Ole fielded a staggering 7 British players today which consisted of SAF's old guard Smalling, Jones and Young, and 4 academy players Greenwood, Rashy, Mctominay and JLingz. Did you noticed any changes in terms of quality or hardwork?

I think that workrate and quality is needed irrespective of nationality.

7 is not brexit enough. 11 hungry passionate British lads who are grateful to be here and we will soar. Rashy Jonah Youngy and Lingz will lead them :devil:

Wenger went for a British core and look what happened to his football in the last 5 years.

Going for a British core is fine if you got Scholes, Giggs, Beckham, Neville and Butt. You know world class players.

I remember Arsenal tried to go down this route a few years back with Walcott, Wilshere, Chambers, Ox etc. However that didnt work out because they were actually s*it. Ole in his recent press conference has talked about having a British core, which is all well and good however the fact is nearly all of our British players are either not good enough, or not good enough to start
Not good enough
Young, Jones, Lingard
Not good enough to start
Rashford, Greenwood, McTomminay, Greenword

Butt and Neville weren’t world class but stuck to their jobs and played their socks off for the club.

No use having world class players if they strut around like prima donnas

I believe in a policy were if there's a top British talent out there then you do your outmost in getting him. We broke the bank for Rio and Rooney. We probably should do the same for Jadon as well.

However, I don't think that nationality = workrate & commitment and I certainly wouldn't want United to end up with 11 sub par players who were brought in simply because they come from a specific part of the world. Cantona, Ole, Keane, Evra and Stam weren't British and they gave their heart to the team.

I'm all for continuing to promote homegrown talents where possible but agree with the above - they have to be good enough.

I don't want us to persevere with Young and Jones for the sake of nationality. If it means going for Wan-Bissaka and Sancho then yes but quality and desire are what needs to be the focus moving forward.

Butt was a reserve. We won the lot because we had Keane at first team level, playing week in week out. Gaz wasn't world class but once he learnt to time his tackles then he became very close to that level. He was certainly and by far the best RB in the EPL.

Our British core had heart but they had talent. Rio is in my opinion the best CB of his era. I wouldn't have swapped Scholes with Zidane. Giggs was absolutely untouchable on his good days and Becks was the best distributor of the ball I've ever seen. Talent is what made them successful not heart. The latter should be a given at a club like Manchester United.

A british core would be nice. But they actually need to be great players like Rio, Rooney and Scholes. Not Jones, Young and Lingard.

Neville wasn’t the most talented. But how many modern fullbacks could cross like him? Not many and sadly Liverpool have one of them.

Butt was one of the best CMs at a World Cup. None of our current cms are good enough to lace his boots.

It's okay to have a good british core if they're actually good.

Young, Jones, Smalling, etc. are not.

Ole is Norwegian, why is he obsessed with Rashy and the Brit shit brigade, ffs.

Wouldn't mind Aaron Wan-Bissaka, Harry Kane, Raheem Sterling and Jadon Sancho. Out of those, the last 3 are ungettable, so might as well not bother with a British core anyway.

We still haven't gone far enough. We need a team with eleven BRAVE PROUD ENGLISH LIONS.

Just look at JLINGZ today. Roaring around looking like a lion in amongst a pack of buffalo.

Or ferocious Phil Jones, who somehow manages to play football even with the entire weight of the pride of the English on his shoulders. No small wonder his muscles keep giving out and spasming.

feck quality. feck passing ability. feck first touch. feck intelligence. feck teamwork. Just get the English lads together and they'll BRING IT HOME.

Said it before, it's worse than choosing players for their height. At least height is a physical trait. I'd love a British core but don't force it if the talent isn't there or it becomes a gimmick

British core, like English core, Anglo Saxon core or even African core is complete boll**ks we need a core of players which would get a game at any of the top 10 teams in Europe. I think we only 7 or 8 that would get a game in the
top 10 of EPL.

They wasn’t the reason we was successful, they was a small part and could have been easily replaced. But they did a job.

We’ve had a glut of disastrous foreign signings since Fergie left. Some a substandard, some are grossly overpaid, some are just not committed and some are all three of those things.

It’s easy to see why the club want to bring a stronger British core to the side.

If we were going to sign Sancho, Rice and AWB then I’d be all for it but Ole is making noises that he wants to shop in the bargain bin and find British players under the radar. That seems to me to be somewhat of a fanciful policy, to say the least.

The reason why the British lads still play is because of the inadequacy of all those signings we’ve made. When you factor that Hererra and Fellani have been the most successful of those signings, it show just how bad the policy has been.

Exactly, it should be an afterthought. Only in situations where we're deciding between players of near equal age and ability should nationality be considered.

United is about having the best of the Isles, not just players from the Isles.

That doesn't mean all foreign players are shite and all British players are great. With the direction the club is taking, we are going to end up with mediocre British players since the good ones are already playing for top clubs or would want CL football (Sancho).

English core is fine, if they are any good. Dont see the point in Lingard, Young, Jones and Smalling.

We shouldnt be buying British for the sake of British. For instance we need a RB and there is a talented young chap at Palace available and he would even be one of the best options for that position overall. I can see the appeal, but we wont be buying him as usual and end up with second rate players, which then stick around forever.

Quality was shite but ‘workrate’ and swearing in English was there.

Looks like a solid foundation for a mid table team

Obviously not.

But they want a stronger British core in the dressing room, players that will settle easily and that love to play for the club.

That doesn't translate to having talent which is a problem.

Basing transfers on nationalities will never work out well. Should scout players based on talent, not where they are from. Of course British players are less likely to move abroad, but there is no point in that if they are shite.

Can't wait to finish mid-table, while the other top teams are buying players regardless of nationality.

This thread is strange. No one is saying we should have a British core at the expense of quality players. But in my opinion if you can get quality players who are British (or even Irish) then it's a plus. The example today proves nothing, we already know a lot of players mentioned in the OP aren't good enough or are just at the very start of their careers.

Under a tree.
If that British core, is promoting youth players and buying the best that are ready to make the break through, then its all good

Not relying on Jones, Young, Smalling & Lingard as your senior leaders, this is mid table level stuff

I agree but it’s called a ‘core’ rather than ‘entire squad’ deliberately.

For several years Gary Neville was in the top 5, maybe top 3 right backs in the world. Zanetti, Cafu, Zambrotta, Thuram, anyone else even close to that debate in the late 90s?

But he wasn't world class...

I wouldn't mind having a British core of they weren't all crap. If we're going to get any English players in, they should be the best options regardless of their nationality ie Sancho.

No he wasn’t. Very good player and bled Utd but wasn’t as good as Denis. My opinion but you’re entitled to yours

Do City have one? I don't think its necessary and smacks a bit of British people work harder type thinking
We need a core of players who have the quality and mentality to play for the club irrespective of nationality
Of course since having good English players also translates to producing for the national team thats good, but we shouldn't prioritise players because they are English/British unless they are also of the right level of quality. We have plenty of English players in our squad right now, most of them are not good enough

In the late 90s, early 2000s? He was clearly better than Irwin. Name a 6th right back who was better.

I would still look to sign the best British talent. But only the ones with the ability to play for the club, I don’t think I could take another Smalling, Jones or Young!
