Who said they had no money? Of course they had money, Wenger simply didn’t want to spend it and more recently their chairman was too busy buying a humongous ranch somewhere in America. You have to remember if required Joe Lewis is one of the richest Englishmen in the world. If he chose to he could easily do a City. Alas he just chooses not to as he is an investment group.
Well that's not Wenger's version of events..

He said: "I was limited. First of all we had to pay the stadium back.

"Then the banks said only 50 per cent of our finances could be dedicated to the wages, so we had to sell our best players.

Has done a fantastic job at Tottenham. Has wheeled and dealed fantastically well. Yes he has made dud buys (Janssen, N'Jie) etc but on the whole has done a remarkable job overhauling the squad left to him by AVB and Tim Sherwood. Reaching a Champions League Cup Final is remarkable.

If Trippier is off, to Italy I've read rumours of, who are we replacing him with because it aint Aurier.
Probably that young kid Walker Peters, Spurs like cheap, he is free, you dont get much cheaper. Levy will be virtually salivating over the savings he will make not having to invest in a RB.

I don't think he is ready/good enough to be our main RB - if Trippier leaves (please god) then we would 100% replace him with a new signing.

You are a Tottenham fan, you would think by now you would be aware how Levy operates. You may sign a RB in the final 5mins of the transfer window, but probably not, but hey Walker Peters was free.

Poch will have to replace Eriksen and Alderweireld, as I see both departing, and your midfield needs serious investment. There is still a little value to be squeezed out of the xfer market, but it is not like it once was.

On the contrary, there was money available last summer to purchase players but Poch chose not to spend it - I've heard this from so many different sources now there has to be some truth in it, I think he trusted the squad and doesn't want to bring in average players just to fill holes.

This summer is make or break for Spurs mind you, absolute crossroads now, need to spend some money and make a statement come the summer.

You may well be right but I HOPE that we will spend a fair wack this summer - especially if we win the CL - would be the best possible time to try and attract some quality players.

I agree, I hope you spend big, carpe diem, etc etc. But we are talking about Levy here. The world could be ending in a months time from an asteroid the size of Alaska hitting the Earth and he would still be balancing his chequebook. Cant spend more than you earn you know kiddies!

Why would banks dictate what a club could spend on wages?
I'm not sure, I assume it was part of a loan agreement to ensure they could pay off the debt?

Ivan Gazidis literally came out and said they had £191m cash reserves in 2016, there was money to spend at Arsenal.
2016 is 10 years after they moved stadiums. How much did they have in the barren years? Also I'm under the impression companies keep cash reserves for emergency unplanned costs, it's not all available to be thrown around in the transfer market.

In fairness, TV revenue etc. has gone through the roof recently compared to 2006 - so I assume Spurs will be in a better position than Arsenal. It's still very surprising that they'd have a lot of money to spend.
"When we built the stadium the banks demanded that I signed for five years," said the 66-year-old.

"I did it. Do you want me to tell you how many clubs I turned down during that period?

"The banks wanted the technical consistency to guarantee that we have a chance to pay [them] back. I did commit and I stayed and under very difficult circumstances. So for me to come back and on top of that [critics] reproach me for not having won the championship during that period it is a bit overboard.

Rather than spend money on new players, i think pochettino wants the club to start paying the top wages that would allow them to keep the likes of Eriksen, Toby, Alli, Kane, etc...

He should want (and receive) both.

Time for Levy to throw the full backing of the club behind him.

Poch: a case of management being given too much credit. Kane, Ali et al. are quality I’m not convinced as a result of poch

Not being facetious but genuinely curious - Arsenal had no money to spend for years after moving stadiums, what makes Spurs' position so different?
I think our position is somewhat different because:

* We've been making very big profits - which obviously helps financially. This is partly because our wages-to-turnover ratio is the lowest in the Prem.
* Our new stadium will be a bigger money-spinner than the Emirates - not least because it's multi-purpose and will be in frequent use outside of football matches.
* For years already we've spent very little in net terms on transfers (saving up for the stadium costs), so whatever spending comes next will be less austere than what we've already been used to.
* Our income has sky-rocketed over the last couple of years - to the point where soon it will exceed that of Arsenal.

We're talking about 200m kitty perseason and 300k per week region budget.

How much would your new stadium bring? Would a 20k more fans brings in substantially bigger profit? We're not talking this year alone but 10 yesrs from now when your golden generations fades and you're forced to buy big.

Well, you may be talking about £200m transfer budget per season and 300k per week wages, but I'm not and nor will Spurs be.

An average net spend of £200m per year on transfers would be wildly unsustainable for any club unless sugar-daddy funded. Even United have spent less than half that amount per season on average over the last 5 years, despite their big spending spree.

Yeah, he finished behind Chelsea with a better squad than them. 26 points behind Liverpool. He’s not at all on Pep’s or Klopp’s level despite what some deluded people think.

Still too good for Spuds though and he knows it, judging from his recent media comments. He will leave sooner or later.

Which ones?

And we dont have a better squad than Chelsea, we were paper thin in Midfield for the last 4-5 months of the season.

Give him some money to spend and if the chairman backs him then I reckon you'll see similar results to Poch and Klopp, can't really judge him against those two seeing as he's under different financial constraints as them.

Yeah I'm sure Poch will leave sooner or later - the world will end sooner or later as well, incredible prediction

Honestly does he have Aspergers? Not in a condescending way just curious.

He bizarelly tried to intimidate Mike Dean in a very odd way that got him banned. He made a joke about Real Madrid that was so out of tune the club whipped out a Communicado Oficial just to set the record straight. His dozens of media hints that he may leave Tottenham get the message across but are anything but subtle, again out of tune. Almost Mourinho like but without Mourinho’s actual sense of humour.

And between these odd outbursts he can seem very aloof.

Can any Spanish speakers here verify what kind of impression he makes when he speaks normally in Spanish?

I think you take it all a bit seriously.

The incident with Mike dean, was just a confrontation as Poch believed Dean should have seen somthing. The joke with real was just a joke, his english still isnt 100% fluent I would agree.

From his latest interview:

Q. Madrid issued a statement for one phrase of yours, but the president acknowledged last Monday that everything is history and that he had spoken with you. Is this the case?

"I admire Real Madrid and their president [Florentino Perez]. Perhaps it is that after six and a half years I have been struck by the English humour, which is not understood in Spain, as I didn't understand it when I came here. Everything is clear. I have a great affinity for Real Madrid since I was little and lived in Argentina. I liked to see that Madrid of Juanito, Gordillo and [Jose Antonio] Camacho who signed me at Espanyol in 1994. He always told me: "Real Madrid have balls, that is the spirit of the club, you can't get stage fright." Having played so many years at Espanyol and having had Camacho as a coach, it made me respect Madrid even more and that will not change. If Madrid are not the number one institution, they are the one and a half, and their president is one of the best in the history of Spanish football, if not the best. I never had any kind of problem with them. I regret that an informal joke has ended up requiring such a response. It makes me sad that my words have been misinterpreted and have caused problems. Maybe I should not have said anything, but what I said was never with bad intentions, but everything is already clear."

Jesus watching his press-conference...he's lost quite alot of weight and I have only noticed it now

I could have swore he was a lot heavier when Spurs knocked out Ajax at the Amsterdam Arena

Yes he used to be quite fat. 2 years ago he said this regarding Kane:

I think he is fresh because he trains a lot. He makes a lot of double sessions and he is very professional. If you are asleep and you eat and you forget to train, maybe you are fat, like me!

Imagine if he wins tomorrow. His standing will absolutely soar.
If we win tomorrow the standing of Spurs will absolutely soar. And Levy, looking to gain improved sponsorship deals for Spurs - and especially looking to sell stadium naming rights - would be dancing a jig 'til past midnight.

He becomes the 2004 Mourinho if he wins tonight. The man who won the Champions League for a team nobody expected. No more "Poch No Silver." Winning the big one puts him up there. Woodward will wank until next June.

Didn't Mourinho also win the UEFA Cup in 2003?

That just earned him his stripes, though. Getting Spurs into the CL consistantly has made Poch a well respected manager. Winning the Champions League puts him reputation well up there with the top managers. I think he needs this as much as Klopp does.
