Looking through the official PL statistics for this season, one in particular caught my eye, its quite a surprising one. Despite all the doom and gloom, despite our unhappiness with the team and the style of play for the first half of the season. Despite everything, we were second when it comes to "big chances missed". City were top. You can see the full list here.

What does the Caf make of this?
Lukaku and Rashford are pants?
We've been playing better in build up play than we thought?
All we need is a new striker?
We deserve a trophy for finishing second in this league?
We think its a meaningless statistic?

All of the above are reasonable responses to take.

Is it a surprise? Rashford struggles to finish his dinner and the less said about Lukaku the better.

With players like Pogba we will always create, but we have nobody reliable to a) get into the right positions and b) actually finish.

We need a proper striker more than anything. That Jovic lad looks like he has a fantastic shot on him, feck build up and technique, let's get someone who knows how to bury it

Pogba missed 18 of the 61 'big' chances :nervous: .
?

16 Rashford
15 Lukaku
7 Pogba
5 Martial

Nobody else higher than 2.

edit: I think you were looking at Pogba's profile page and took the number from there. That is for every PL game he's played in his career, not just this season.

Seriously, we'd be in 3rd if United just can finish 3 chances in any other games when we were drawing or losing.

Our attacking stats in terms of goals scored and creativity are very similar to Spurs, Chelsea and Arsenal. Of course, none are quite good enough, but they would improve loads IMO with an improved defence and midfield. Add an actual right sided player and itd be fine IMO. Maybe not City/Liverpool level, but we can be a quality side regardless. Its far from the biggest issue. A world class striker can mask a lot of the issues through being more clinical and doing things on his own, but it doesnt fix the problem that is our midfield and defence being horribly balanced and nowhere near good enough.

United celebrate Lukaku's meagre goal tally
So, an average of 14 Premier League goals per season.

Hardly anything to write home about.

Not surprised, we'd hardly a side you could call ruthless.
Was the opposite last season. Didn't create much but the ones we did create ended up in the back of the net.

It was the same during our purple patch after Ole took over. Again didn't create that much but kept banging them in. Confidence does wonders I guess.

We were 7th last season in the same stat. Missed 42 chances.

20 less than City and Liverpool. De Gea and our front lines efficiency really masked the tumescent football we were playing under Mourinho.

It's not a meaningless statistic. One that provides more context to it is the amount of big chances created.

https://www.premierleague.com/stats/top/players/big_chance_created

It's looked at by player, but I've added it for the top 6 clubs.

Manchester City: 101 (in a season where Kevin De Bruyne was out for nearly the entire season)
Liverpool: 78 (Robertson and TAA big contributors here)
Chelsea: 79 (After Hazard, Luiz contributed the most here)
Tottenham: 64
Arsenal: 72
United: 65

Only Tottenham created less big chances than we did. They managed to miss less big chances (Kane and Son are clinical players), yet they struggled to finish 4th this season. Which is more evidence to my assertion that in order for you to be a high quality attacking side, you simply have to generate more chances through your attacking play. Paul Pogba created the most big chances in our team, 7. Players who created more big chances than him this season include the mighty David Luiz (11), Ryan Fraser (28!!!), Lucas Digne (13), Alex Iwobi (10), Kieran Tripper (8), and Ashley fecking Westwood (10).

Put Kane or Aguero up front in this team. We'll manage to scrape 4th, just like Tottenham have. Put our strikers in Liverpool or City's side and they would be poorer, but would still finish 2nd comfortably.

Those stats can’t be right. Lingard has missed two or less big chances all season? Seems like he averages one big chance missed per game!

Excellent post.

But apparently my knee was jerking when I made this thread:

It must also be extremely demoralising to play in such a low volume team for a forward. The pressure of missing chances is a lot higher, if you know that there's hardly going to be another one coming your way.

Even Zlatan went through a confidence crisis here.

I remember under Sir Alex when our forwards were going through a bad patch, the team would make a massive effort to get him a goal. For us, under Mourinho the shop would shut at 1-0 and your forwards are on a 6 game goal less streak.

It must also be demoralising to be a midfielder for that team, with forwards that are either immobile or incapable of trapping a ball.

Here's another perspective on it.

In 2012/13, our last league winning season, we were 3rd on the changes missed statistic - a full 21 missed chances behind City - a testament to the quality of RVP's season.
The following season, under Moyes, we slumped to 8th in the table at just 38 big chances missed.

I'm not sure what all this tells us but its a cool web tool for your inner nerd.

Hmmm.. That is interesting. And does give some hope. Which is in scarce supply. So thank you!

It’s certainly encouraging. Especially when you consider how many more chances we created due to one youngster’s movement and quality against Cardiff.

The lack of movement and quality up top and out wide has limited our chances as much or more than anything.

Add a quality striker and a proper right winger and we’ll be closer to City and Liverpool than the London clubs.

It’s not encouraging if we have Lukaku up top again next season.

Same logic would have to apply for everyone else though. We'll still be crap.
