Why can't we sign both Toby and him. Since Toby will only cost 25m anyway. Atleast, with him and Toby we can have defenders who are competent on the ball. Furthermore, we are probably going to sell Bailly, Rojo and Darmian anyway. Plus if we sell Jones aswell we would require 2 Cb signings. Axel could also come in after loan. So our Cbs options would be Toby, Koulibally, Lindelof, Smalling and Axel which are great.
That would be a smart move for us. But I guess Ole prefers Maguire.

Also, I can see Alderweireld going to Ajax as De Ligt replacement.

Can't believe people are arguing about signing Koulibaly or Alderweireld when we've got frigging Smalling and Jones playing for us.

Would be happy if this went through.

I honestly can’t see them turning down £65m. That’s 75m euros roughly. He’d improve our passing from our back line immediately. Wouldn’t even care if we still had Jones in the background if we had him and Lindelof every week.

Exactly. Sign them both and keep tuanzebe and Smalling/Lindelöf as back ups. Sell the rest

Don't shoot the messenger but thought I would just share with you all that Talksport presenter Andy Goldstein said tonight on his show that he had heard from someone that Koulibaly was close.

The show is called The Sports Bar and runs from 10pm-1am every weeknight and will be available to listen again later today.

I believe that he mentioned it around 1 hour 50 minutes into the show so feel free to make your own mind up about it

Would you prefer to spend the money on Koulibaly OR Alderweireld + Ake/Diop?

I would be happy with Koulibaly. Doesn't look like we're getting De Ligt so Koulibaly would be brilliant.

Just had another listen and this is what Goldstein said about Koulibaly

"The Koulibaly thing I have only heard good things about the fact that him coming to Utd is very close, so you never know"

Make of that what you will but worth remembering that he does work for MUTV so it's possible that he is well connected to the club

Alderweireld and Meunier. Not convinced we need two CB with Tuanzebe set to be promoted.

And who knows. Maybe De Ligt will still be at Ajax for another season.

Shelling out such a massive fee for Koulibaly will end in tears. He and Lindelof are too similar.

Alderweireld would be a great cheap signing but is looking likely he'll go back to Ajax. Not much to do in that situation.

That bloke on reddit said similar.

Or maybe he's Andy Goldstein.

Yeah that Reddit 'ITK' said this is happening too.

I think it's a tad risky - have centre backs come from Serie A before to the PL and been an instant success?

I highly doubt this is Ole's signing - I reckon our recruitment department/scouts have been working on this for some time. They've not had a good record with transfers over the last few years - will they get this one right?

I hope so.

I believe we still need a midfield that can control games. If the central midfield is weak our centre backs are exposed whoever they are.

Who controls games for Liverpool from midfield?

Everyone. They press the daylight out of the opponent and are all able to carry the ball, spread play or have quick interchanges.

Ours don't. As talented as Pogba is, he too often slows shit down with the way he shields the ball, and he gets dispossed too. Matic is long past his best, Herrera is gone and McTominay isn't quite there yet.

Signing Koulibaly will be huge, if we can pull it off. He and Lindelof/Tuanzebe could make a great CB pairing that can actually play.

I think Bailly could make a good partnership too - I would sell Jones, Rojo and Smalling

Koulibaly's teammate Allan would be an hell of a signing for us. He is able to put a lot pressure on the opponent's team, aswell as distribute play. His aggression and workrate would be very welcome.

He's both French and Senegalese..:D
But do CBs from SERIE A do well in the PL?

Rudiger took a while to get going didn't he?

Napoli seem pretty adamant he's not for sale, which indicates only a daft amount will prise him away.

So he's going to be more expensive than VvD, older, and needs time to adapt from a slower less intense league.

Like I said, this is not some beginning of a new era of clear-outs and transfers - the same recruitment people we've had for years are still in charge. Hopefully they've got this one right.

This is so much the obvious thing to do that it hurts my brain when people suggest otherwise.

2 CB’s that are absolutely miles better than anything we have now, would instantly make us a miles better side. Alderweireld should be bought simply because of the ridiculously cheap price.

Lindelöf is at a great age to not “worry about the long term future”, he’d improve immensely playing with these guys.

Would transfer our football dramatically, the composure these two would bring would be huge, hell Koulibaly alone would make a World of difference.

Napoli will sell, he’s about to turn 28 so this is the last window where they can command a huge fee for him and given our predicament it’s perfect timing for them.

If we end up paying a record fee for a 28 year old CB, are we looking at a Van Dijk calibre player?

He's not as good as Van Dijk, he's a very good player and I think if we get the chance to buy him we should take it. We should take a leaf out of Liverpool's book and look to add an excellent DM (like they did with Fabinho). We'll have to end up overpaying for him but we're so desperately short of quality that we've left ourselves little choice.

No. Van Dijk is a level above. Far, far more dominant in the air, even better in the ball, especially in long passing.

Koulibaly is a capable defender (would be among the best in the Premier League), but the overall defensive capability of a team is as much dependent on organization as it is on individual ability. We don't look well organized at the back.

Don’t watch much of Serie A so for those that do or watched Koulibaly in the Champions League I’m asking on a scale of 1-10 with 1 being Rojo and 10 being Van Dijk how good genuinely is Koulibaly in comparison ? Is he worth the £75-£100 million it’s likely to cost us to sign him ?

Think you've nailed it with this post. Regarding organisation, Van Dijk was already the best CB in the league, but Klopp has added a quality LB, GK and DM to help them defensively, even if we add Koulibaly we need to seriously consider upgrading RB and DM ourselves.

LB too and i’d Get Alderweireld. I’d go so far to say just fix the defence. It’s that crap.

I’m not hugely convinced on him. He’d definitely be an improvement but I’m not sure he’s a £75m plus defender. Makes a lot of sliding tackles and I think in this fast league he’ll miss time a lot more than he does in Italy.

It will be another disaster waiting to happen. I hope united stay away from him. We don!t need another Lukaku or Sanchez at the club.

He's the best we can get as De Ligt looks like he's going to Barca. Skriniar could be an option but I feel he's a bit slow and also he doesn't want to move. I would actually sell Rojo and Bailly/Jones and get Koulibaly and a very good young CB in.
