How do Barcelona afford their massive wages?

Barcelona has the highest wage bills in the world and their wage ratio to revenue is 80% I think, our is like almost 50%.

They already spent 75m euro on De Jong who will be earning net 10m euro with 6m bonus annually next season. They want to add Greziammn for 120m euro, I have no idea how much Barcelona is willing to pay him a salary but apparently, Griezmann is 400K euro net per week playing for Atletico Madrid. They also want to get De Ligt for 60-80m, that's crazy.

I have no idea how much they can afford it but it felt like Barcelona is willing to spend more money than they can afford and bankrupting themselves trying to get the best player in each position. It doesn't stop them from spending 100m on one player even if their wage ratio is too high. Are they desperate for another UCL trophy or what?

I admire their ambition, I wish our board would have the same ambition as them the exception of wage ratio.

It will be their third 100m+ transfer in 3 years - Dembele, Coutinho and Griezmann

Remember when Woodward said "we can do things in the transfer market other clubs can only dream of"? Still waiting...

They're a football club, what else are they supposed to be spending money on? Dividends and interest payments?

There's doing things in the transfer market and there's utter stupidity... I wonder if you'd be happy if we'd spent 150 million on Coutinho. Sanchez is bad enough.

He actually did it though. We bought shite players for elite money. Its a dream for many clubs. A nightmare kind of dream though

They're also spending 800m on their stadium redevelopment. I'm not sure how they're doing it.

I have no clue how the hell they're able to do this. It's absolutely nuts the investment they're making.

They'll sign De Jong and De Ligt too :houllier:

There's no way for even Real Madrid to compete.

Compair this to most North American sports with salary caps, where net expenditures on salaries is somewhere between 50 - 55 of revenue generated

I recall hearing a couple of years back that Juve paid out 90% of revenues in the form of player salaries.

They’re basically having their own Catalan era of “los galacticos.” They’re doing what Madrid were notorious for in the past. Maybe even more but without the animosity towards them like los blancos had. No idea how they’re affording it. No excuse for them not to win the CL next season.

Meanwhile since 2013, Madrid have purchased just:

Bale €100M & James Rodriguez €70M as big money marquee signings.

Incredible.

Real Madrid can compete, their prize money revenue over the past 5 years must have been very high. 4 CL's in 5 years surely won't hurt financially. :D

It's all down to Messi bankrupting the club. That guy is on like a Million a week according to some reports.

He's bigger than the club I guess so he will run it into the ground.

So long as the money can be attributed to the club's profits I don't really see what's wrong. Barcelona's spending hasn't moved the club's position, they are still over reliant on Messi and Demebele / Coutinho have massively failed to represent their transfer values.

You have to take into account their reported wage bills mentioned include every sport, not only football. Basketball, Futsal, Handball, Roller Hockey, and many other things. Ok it’s still much probably but I would like to see only the report related to Football compared with other clubs.

They get prize money for winning but then give big individual prizes to the players for winning it so it's not as big of a bonus to the club as it may seem.

From the numbers I've seen online, Barcelona's wage bill is already an incredible amount ahead of every other club. After this summer, it will be the biggest wage bill in football history not only in absolute terms but also in comparison to the other top teams.

The difference between the two clubs in the past 5 years when it comes to money spent on their football teams is ridiculous. It's the catalan version of Los Galacticos.

And their fans will love him for it. Club's a Messi cult... Would actually make a good thriller movie.

This is why I don't get the special Barcelona fan love. They're no different than the likes of Madrid, PSG in terms of buying success nowadays. Messi aside they have been splashing cash. Even Messi is on a really high wage. Barca fit the "big money. big wins" model just as anyone else.

Santos were apparently close to going bust due to the wages they were paying Neymar. Wonder if its ever happened.

Certainly. Saw a post on FB saying "Griezmann has decided to join Barcelona because he wants to play with Messi"

Although they can't be blamed for it. They are where they are because of him

Are they in huge debt?

If not and they are also investing in important things like their stadium? Why the feck shouldn't they blow their cash on players. We use half our income to fund the fecking Tampa Bay Bucs

And it's not like they are spending oil money

I guess at some point they'll either go bankrupt or they'll find some wasteland the Spanish government suddenly decides is prime real estate.

They are in debt, quite a bit, and have taken out huge loans to paper over the cracks. But they generate enormous revenue.

They will sell Coutinho,Rakitic and Umtiti and will be fine, although after la decisión last year I wouldn't have bought Griezmann.

Do they get much love? Maybe in the peak Xavi/Iniesta/Messi days, but not really anymore. Let’s face it, anyone who wants success needs to spend.

They are not crazy.

After Madrid run of CL triumph, it undone the work supposed Barcelona peak in term of CL tally gap. Messi contract is due at 2020 2021 which likely the point where they can lower the wage or looking to sell him. Which in the mean while they have to assemble a quality team. Player fee, wage is getting more expensive. Getting the best when you can is important than being cornered: can't give older 2021 Messi what he wants, but building a team without him would be even or more expensive. Barcelona is in position that they have to stay among top of football world, so their board has to take responsibilities.

People treat them like some sort of alternative grassroots club whereas they've also been splashing cash.

Wages are huge. But the sale of Neymar basically paid for Coutinho and Dembele.

But they always been big spenders. Look at how much they were spending in the 90s they were up there with the Italian clubs. It’s just they don’t make a big galactico deal out of it like their rivals.

Close to €100M a year gross and around €47-50M net a year I read which makes sense since Ronaldo is on €30M a year net at Juve and Messi earns comfortably more than him.
