Thank god we didn't let our captain go on a free! We got ambitions you see!

They'll probably build a statue for him, and rightly so. He's a legend there, and certainly one of the best PL centre backs I've ever seen.

Can't see why Kompany wouldn't be able to find a half decent team. Vermaelen is older, less good and injured just as much and even he was still at Barcelona this season.

No surprise really. In the interview after the Leicester match he dropped what could have been taken as a big hint and then backtracked after being asked about it.

2:25 here, talking about tears, playing every game as if it's his last one etc.

Didn't see it, but the radio speculated that he looked like he was saying goodbye after the Brighton game.

He only cost £7 million, an absolute bargain, and one of the rare pieces of excellent business during Hughes's time at the club (another being the £6 million signing of Zabaleta). In the same summer as far as defenders go, Liverpool spent the same around on Dossena and Chelsea spent over double that amount on Bosingwa.

I think he joined about a week or so before the Sheikh Mansour takeover was completed during the summer of 2008. I doubt he could have envisaged being so successful, so influential and winning so many trophies with the club when he made the move from Hamburg.

They let go of a guy who literally just won them the title with the most amazing goal I've ever seen a centre back score. Meanwhile we are handing out extensions to Jones and Young.

This has been on the cards for a while. Anytime Guardiola was asked about a new contract for Kompany he talked about his injury record and said the club wouldn't be sentimental in their decision making.

This is why they are the best. The standards at that club are through the roof in comparison to us.

Bit of a bizarre way to announce it. A letter on facebook. And a second letter to follow? Sounds a bit like when LeBron made 'The Decision'.

Cheers for making the dippers cry both times they've been somewhat relevant in the last decade. Now feck off you alien head.

And with that, the last piece of City has gone. There is only Abu Dhabi now.

Very good player - always think he could have been a top CM but think his CB peak was very short due to mistakes.

Don't love his character and glad he didn't win the quadruple that he guaranteed

Welcome to Manchester reception committee
I know his injury record hasn't been great but I think they're a poorer team without him. As a leader and a defender he's been exceptional for them. I'm not sad that we won't have to play against them with him in the side again.

Arguably one of the best signings in Premier League history. Absolute pittance of a price and sparked the rise of dressing room leadership at Manchester City that has witheld their grip on domestic success throughout this era. Aye, you can point to them spending millions but every single side needs a nucleus of players that are winners, leaders and wise in terms of footballing ability. With Kompany they had a player who had all of that and more. His attitidude off the field holds him in the same regard as someone like Drogba. With Kompany I don't know a fan of any club who dislikes him, just a genuinely great bloke. Nice for him that he caps off with a domestic treble and an absolute firecracker of a goal to keep them ahead in the title race at the end of the season. The movement of him, Silva, Ageuro and Pep out of the City side is going to be very interesting. I don't think they will suffer a decline as bad as yourselves but they'll definitely be significantly weaker and other teams can pounce.

Absolute bargain of a signing for them. The last of the proper captains. I thought they'd keep him for one more year.

New York City FC bound? Probably take up a managerial role like Vieria did after hes retired, seems an intelligent guy.
I know somebody that did some of the same courses as kompany as they both did their MBA part time... He speaks really highly of him in terms of intelligence and business sense ... Could see him going the sporting director route after a couple more seasons in USA ... Possibky they might even give him that type of role in their USA franchise before bringing him back to city in the future

Possibly though you have to admit with stones and laporte they had already phased kompany somewhat out and will no doubt get a good replacement (de ligt or some other top notch ball playing centre back) ... d.Silva would be a loss to anyt but b.silva and foden go a long way to softening that blow ... They have Jesus and when aguero goes no doubt they will reinforce there and they have even apparently bid for rodri as a fernandinho successor.
Sadly they do seem so far to be doing a good job of succession planning

Will be gutted to see him go, but not exactly a shite farewell, given his last three games were a league win, a cup win, and his last game at home, where he scored a fantastic, crucial 1-0 winner.

I was certain City would give him an extension. They must have something big lined up for the summer if they're willing to let Kompany walk for nothing.

I meant Captain fantastic aka Young. Forgot Valencia was our captain sorry.
To put it in perspective

Ashley Young will still be at United at age 34. Valencia, Vidic, and Evra weren't at United at that age.

This club is an embarrassment. The one guy who has been awful keeps lingering around.

Meanwhile we award Phil Jones with a new long term contract

As you said, the standards at that club are just night and day compared to ours.

If City now go and buy De Ligt, you might as well hand them the title for the foreseeable future.

It could equally be kompanys choice... He might feel he wants to go out on a high and go somewhere else and play for another season or two rather than increasingly be a bit part player?

Best to go out on a high, surely knows he won't be playing that much and doesn't wan't to hang around on the bench. I'm sure they offered a deal.

Plus he's got that hit against Leicester to go out on, doubt he'll score a better goal than that again, and was key to the title this year.

I doubt it. His interviews made it seem very much like he wanted to stay.

Hard to dislike Kompany, seems like a real gent and what a leader. To think Mark Hughes signed him for like 5m when he was playing as a DM

I'd put him and Rio and the 2 best CB's in the PL era

City and Guardiola are absolutely ruthless to kick him out. Ferguson would have done the same, here we reward much lesser players such as Young or Jones contract extensions, mind boggling. Signing someone like de Ligt is the smart business. Hopefully with the right players who work their bollocks off, we stand a chance next season.
One can hope...
We are massively behind and it looks like they are after De Ligt, arguably the most talented teenager right now. How have we got any chance of catching up when they keep buying the best players?
