Not a clickbait title, promise.

Nik @Rood is joined by Mark @Stobzilla and Ed @That'sHernandez to do a round up of the season talk about Ole and discuss who should go before the new season.

You muppet Ed

I can't think of a title that would appeal to the forum more right now in fairness, the man knows the market.

The discussion about Herrera literally sounded like the Herrera thread but in audio format.

The hate for Herrera from some fans is ridiculous - you'd think he was fecking us over like a Tevez or Heinze from the way some are going on!

This is for you @Stobzilla

Nice one! Enjoyed that. I was listening to the (far inferior) Sky Sports football podcast that focused on our summer overhaul and Andy Mitten said he’d heard rumblings and expected Fletcher to be appointed, which obviously echoes what @Stobzilla predicted.

Herrera as ever continues to divide opinion massively, so no change there. I don’t consider him the spawn of Satan for opting to join PSG, though his romanticisations of football in general (I remember reading a long piece to do with his dad?) does ring slightly hollow now. Can’t say I give two hoots though.

Looking forward to the next one. Cheers guys

I had more sympathy for Tevez than I do for Herrera. This comes from a man who would have willingly engaged in sexual relations with Dimitar Berbatov.

I am very much 'that guy' who thinks Herrera was pretty hard done by at United. Should have played a lot more games under both LVG and Jose. Instead he came in and out of the team and after he finally established himself and won player of the year? He was dropped so Jose could bring in a Chelsea reject.

Choosing Valencia as captain over Herrera was also genuinely absurd

Will there be a podcast on the Glazers and Woodward, the core of problems here?

Great work guys! Glad to hear everyone agrees Ole should be given more time to make an impact. Agree that if we started off with a few losses and finished the season on that record winning streak the consensus would be much different.

I'd much rather Herrera have stayed as I think he was a positive influence we could do with at this time. Also liked the discussion about Mata. Have to say I'm on the let him leave side. Nice guy, skilful player but I don't think he's ideal for the squad given his age and wages.

Of course Ole needs time, at least a window. But if the good run of form is longer than "new manager bounce" then of course the hideous run of form is longer than just a blip.

It’s a fair point, however I think there are mitigating circumstances in the hideous run. The players were clearly playing with fatigue and Ole had to adopt a more pragmatic approach due to this. He ran them too hard in the first month or two, by his own admission.

Very true. Still, the Everton game and the last two league games were just below any sort of acceptable level really. You could say we were unlucky against Cardiff (yes, not a pen, and they probably should have had a man sent off) but we were still woeful. The good with the bad I think is fair.

Mind, I'm still listening to the podcast (always enjoy it - thanks!), stop start at work. I agree with whoever said now is an exception to the rule of not getting rid of too many players. I think 8 is quite modest and sensible to be honest. We don't need to buy as many as we get out the door. And Darmian and Rojo leaving is not enough for youngsters to get game time. They hardly played all season.

Most of us won't complain if loads are shifted out and youth promoted. I'd take a poor league finish if it meant cleansing the squad. Though I'd still think we'd finish at least 6th.

Utterly bizzare -

Tevez is the ultimate Judas and all time biggest cnut as far as I'm concerned, Herrera doesn't even make the top 10.

Why do you say Tevez is a Judas? It was Utd refusing to sign him on a permanent basis, that drive him to City, and played well there. Do you expect him to be unemployed for the next 5 seasons?

Never get emotional in business. The worst time to make a decision is when you are angry, offended or anxious. To be honest I have no idea whether or not Ole will be the right man for United. I have no idea whether he will survive the season or indeed the first ten games. I will tell you what I do know though and that is that he must be given a reasonable chance to earn the right to keep the job.

The problem for Ole is that I cannot conceive that he will be given three years to rebuild United. Realistically, it is just not going to happen. The environment around United is so hyper-sensitive to failure and disapointmemt right now. As such, I think a poor run of games, similar to what we saw at the end of last season, would almost certainly see Ole out of the door.

To keep his job Ole will need to ensure that United finish in a top four place, with a competitive points total. The progress compared to last season must be demonstrable and neasureable across a wide range of metrics including: overall perfornances, points won, points differential to the champions etc I doubt if anything less than that will be good enough, especially given the amount of money United are likely to spend.

I love him and really do hope he succeeds here but honestly I can see it ending in tears. A bad start to the season and it could potentially end up really bad. I really hope he has a good season because quite frankly I'm getting sick to death of this whole process of sacking managers and getting in new ones. I just want us to have one guy for at least 4-5 years. When SAF left I was praying we could avoid becoming a new Chelsea but that dream quickly went to hell....

Really good points there.

I agree with you whole-heartedly. I think that everyone is hoping that Ole makes it, but my sense is that there are not many who truly expect him to. It is almost as if in our heads we sre 100% behind him but in our heads we are worried that he foesnt have a clue.

I think Ole has a tougher job than either Moyes, Van Gaal or Mourinho. Moyes don't forget, was Sir Alex's hand-picked successor ' the chosen one' and he actually started quite well before things fell apart dramatically and when they did he didn't even last the season. Van Gaal was protected by his considerable reputation, but even a trophy could not save him. As for Mourinho, I think United were seduced by the fact that because he had won titles everywhere he had been he would win them at United as well. Jose was also protected by his reputation and helped by the fact that he managed to win a couple of trophies, but in the end even he was shown the door.

Ole has none of the above going for him. In fact it could be argued that despite the fact tgat he is a club legend, his situation is much worse. United are a club in considerable turmoil, out of the Champions League, way behind both City and Liverpool, saddled with players that are clearly not committed to the club and fast becoming something of a laughing stock in the football community. Add to that United's restive fan base and I think you have the makings of a truly difficult job. Possibly the only thing going for Ole is the fact that he is loved by the fans, whose ire is being directed at the players and the board, for now. Unfortunately, by itself that will never keep Ole in a job.

That said, whilst Ole must at least be given a chance to prove himself, we are going to have to be honest with ourselves too. I would assess Ole after a third of the season. If United are playing well at that stage and commitment levels from the players are high, even if the results are indifferent, I would be inclined to back him. However, if performances and results mirror the absolute dross we saw at the end of last season and if Ole continues to back players like Young, Jones and Snalling then for me, Ole really has to go. It would be evidence, if any where needed, that he lacks the acumen to manage an elite club.

It is true to say that football is a game of romanticism, but more importantly it is a game of pragmatism.

@Stobzilla is bang on about Herrera, refreshing to know others don't buy his rubbish. Most overated United player, you think prime Robson is leaving.

I don't know if it's all fair. People and papers can say it is just money hungry stuff but he hasn't consistently played here. He probably made up his mind under mourinho where no matter how well he played he couldn't stay in the team. The best part of his career has been spent in and out of the team.

Tevez was a curious case. So-so for us, absolutely fantastic for City. Maybe on a mission?

Still, I don't believe Herrera would've gone to either City or Liverpool after us, that's why I don't hate him.

There's something about Herrera I don't trust. He says a lot of the right things then does the exact opposite. If I was managing him I wouldn't trust him one bit, wouldn't be surprised if he's been an instigator in the pay disparity issues behind the scenes.

While I find Herrera a bit disingenuous currently, and would be fine with the comments he has made recently if he made them at the start of next season or beyond, I think it's unfair to say he would have had any role in the pay structure of the club. The responsibility for that lies with the players demanding the high wages, the agents encouraging these demands for their cut and the club for bending to the demands and setting the precedent. The precedent in that regard was probably set years ago when we gave Rooney an extra contract under Moyes, and perhaps exacerbated with the contract given to Schweinsteiger under LVG.

Because if you play for Manchester United then going directly to City or Liverpool is not an option. Even players who went indirectly like Ince and Schmeichel tarnished their legacy with much of the fanbase, although for me thats not such a problem, especially for those well past their peak like Schmeichel was.

Heinze is another on the list, we never had much luck with Argentines

plus Judas Tevez did this

@Stobzilla has an issue with Herrera going to PSG (and I do agree with his disdain for this type of manufactured bg club) but they are not historic rivals of ours in any way whatsoever so it doesnt really bother me that he chooses a new challenge in a new country

I don't think anyone has spoken of him in those terms. It is just that we have a shite squad and he's one of the more consistent players and he doesn't moan, he's professional.

Think he's been a bit hard done by here. I don't care which club he signs for (as long as it's not City or the scouse). We should have sorted out his deal a long time ago, but Woody plays poker with these contracts unless players are shite, then we tie them up for the long haul.

Is he supposed to say no thanks to a huge deal at PSG that guarantees him many years of playing CL football?

If Ole is going to appoint Young as Captain he may as well be sacked. He has lost his mind completely.

The problem is he ALWAYS play poker and the shite ones will take his first poker-faced 100k+ offer.

Bit extreme, at least Young gets what it means to play for United. Fergie had Neville as captain, who was perpetually injured and past it by his own admission. I don’t see it as a big deal.

It isn’t a big deal, just some fans make it one. Anything to complain about they find it and go on and on and on about it.

Thanks guys, a quite positive listen considering the shit show we had at the end of the league.

EDIT: I kiiiiind of agree on the Herrera being untrue greedy player. He seemed like a good lad but at the same time he had that sneaky cnut side in him. If he played for a City or Pool I'd prolly hated him fiercely.

The pod was a refreshing break from the continued negativity of the CAF over recent weeks about our manager.

Agree more with @Stobzilla @That'sHernandez on the players that need out than @Rood. @Rood 's far too forgiving of Romelu 'I dream of Serie A' Lukaku. After seeing our players stink up the place since Paris, with the zero effort in like a dozen matches, I'm not putting up with players openly touting themselves elsewhere while continuing to half arse it.

Which is why on the other hand I agree with @Rood on Herrera. @Stobzilla and @That'sHernandez might think he's nothing but a doorstop salesman but, at least when Herrera played, I never felt like he was phoning it in. Our best performance in recent memory, the 1-1 with Chelsea, came with him on the pitch. Even if he was wanting for talent Ander never lacked for commitment. How many of the rest of our squad can honestly say the same? J-Stand sung to him as he left Old Trafford for the final time and IMO he deserved it.
