Ole and him are like oil and water. Ole wants hard workers, Martial refuses to work hard.
I bet Pep would get the best out of Martial. Either motivating him or he would make sure Martial took his vitamins and maybe a testosterone cocktail to get him to be more aggressive.

Pep would've shipped him out of City in an instant.

Might help to see in what sense they were talking about Benzema in, but surprisingly supportive of him tbh.
I don't think Jose would have pushed and struggled with Martial if he didn't rate him. Obviously there is only so much a manager can do, the player has to want it as well.

Yeah tbf he did play him in a decent amount of big games despite everything. There were a lot of talks before we signed him that Mourinho wanted him at Chelsea. Just maybe at the same time Martial's persona didnt mix well with Mourinho's methods of man management.

What type of manager does Martial need then? If anything what is happening under Ole with Rashford and Martial is far more alarming than what was happening under Jose. It was only because that there was a narrative that Jose was destroying these young forwards did they get excuses made for them. Those excuses are gone and they are now far more heavily criticised. I don't even think they can handle the responsibility a lot of fans wanted them to have when Jose was in charge. They are clearly not good enough yet, and that is mostly down to themselves, not no manager or coaching.

Under a tree.
I’m not so sure. For example, he bought Mourinho reject Kevin De Bruyne and got him to produce the goods. Great managers find a way to motivate talented players.
KDB was already producing the goods, he wasnt a cast away in the wilderness and Pep resurrected him. City spend 58m on him and i am sure he still holds the assist record in the Bundesliga

fecking idiot's been caught doing laughing gas on camera in a night club

No problem with doing but have some sense about you and don't do in such a public place/on camera. You know what the media's like. Martial just seems thick as shit.

More importantly Pellegrini brought him... not Pep

Benzema when Jose tried to mug him off in the press, walked into Jose office and demanded respect, he then went on to score 28 goals that season.

I'm guessing Jose mugging off Martial in the press had the opposite effect, Jose likely had his reasons and was looking for a similar reaction maybe

Martial lack of development is on Martial and no one else. His running stats are horrific. If he truly wants to be top class, he has to figure out a. how to make runs consistently b. how to anticipate loose balls in the box c. how to become more flexible with is movements on the ball. I remember when Jose played him on the right, that was the game that truly highlighted Martials limitations. I do not expect him to ever be a ballon d'or contender because he just doesn't have that level of touch and technique( a reason why he struggles on the right hand side), but he can be a consistent pfa player of the year contender if he just focuses and trains on these aspects of his game.

His best position is on the left, why move him to the right? I really don't like manager moving players around different position which isn't their best position, except if it was needed for few games.

Eventhough his form tailed off after getting some consistent runs under Mourinho, I don't think he should be moved around. He's one of those wing forwards who like to cut in first before doing anything after that. Likewise Ounas, who I have also noticed doesn't do well on the left as a left footer compared to his performance on the right, similar to Robben. After they've got the ball, the first thing they do is drift inside with it, after which they either take a shot, make a throughball or cross but the first thing is to drift inside with the ball at their feet. They can sometimes go down the right wing with the ball but the first thing on their mind is to drift inside after getting the ball which they can't do on the left side because they would have to make use of their right foot after drifting inside with the ball.

That said, Martial's off the ball movement needs to improve. It's not only when he gets the ball that he should come alive. Without the ball, he should be able to worry the defenders with his off the ball movement and create space for his teammates to exploit. Also, his workrate needs to be improved.

I'm still not happy with his huge wage Increase but there's no use crying over spilt milk.

The season is over, he can do whatever he wants as long as it's not illegal nor detrimental to his health.

Laughing gas isn't that big of a problem is it?
It isn't a massive problem but people can get health issues from it. Plenty of footballers do it and in Martial's case it was once the season was over so I don't see a massive problem.

Nile Ranger in 2013
Walker in 2013
Agbonlahor in 2015
Grealish in 2015 & 2016
Sterling in 2015
Ozil, Lacazette, Guendouzi, Aubameyang and Kolasinac days before the start of this season

Reportedly Clyne a few times as well - both at Liverpool and Bournemouth. Usually seems to be The Sun who gets the pictures.

Can't believe people are up in arms over this laughing gas thing. Young footballers used to be drinking heavily and abusing cocaine, as far as a recall, Rio was a man for the Charlie, no?

Off-the-ball running.

If anyone can ever get him to do it, he'll tear the league to shreds. But he's not arsed.

He needs to majorly change his game and overall attitude if he's ever going to make it. But I'm all for players coming back early and putting the work in.

I somehow feel very optimistic about our attack for next season. If we lose Rom we won't have much experience but there will be plenty pace and youthful enthusiasm.

Martial being back in training early is a sign that he wants it.
Rashford has a huge opportunity if Rom goes.
Greenwood is an absolute star in the making.
James has just a fecked up amount of pace and seems to be improving by the second.

I can't wait to see these lads running at defenders next season.

Based on what do you assess this rapid improvement ?

He doesn’t need to majorly change his game and he won’t. He needs to get his condition right and go into the season sharp. He will remain a player who looks to get the ball into his feet and that is fine.

Well, he couldn't get a game for Shrewsbury the season before last. By the end of his first season playing senior football he's a starter for Wales and has signed for United. He's clearly on a very quick progression. I've watched him a couple of times for Wales and some game highlights from late last season and his game looks pretty tidy, he passes the ball crisply, crosses well with both feet, makes good decisions and has pace that would terrify any defender. He certainly doesn't look like someone who couldn't get into the Shrewsbury team not long ago. Giggs also mentioned it in a couple of interviews.
