His ball skills are a bit uncultured but he is a physical beast. He would definitely suit a high energy, high pressing style of football, especially with a couple of midfield partners with silkier skills and playmaking ability next to him.
He has improved with the ball over the season. I agree he's a little inconsistent in that area, but he is capable of making some nice passes.

We lost Fellani and Herrera, and Matic has been struggling physically. McTominey has stepped up, but we probably need at least one midfield signing this summer. I'd be happy enough if he was one of them, but if he's the only midfielder we sign this summer we will struggle again.

You guys would do a really good job of signing him. I'd love for my club (Inter) to sign him. I'm a big fan of Atletico due to Simeone and watch them consistently. Thomas is young and has huge potential. Imo, he's one of the few players that Simeone hasn't given the amount of playing time he deservers. The Spanish core tend to get more minutes (Rodri, Koke, Saul), but Thomas is an awesome player. Good defensively, has a good pass on him, and a rocket of a shot. He's a very dynamic, modern midfielder and would fit any team. I also think Atletico really missed him in the away match vs. Juventus.
I never watched him nowadays but 2 seasons ago I used to watch a lot of ATL Madrid matches because I wanted Griezmann to join United, and Partey never really impressed me. May be now he has made improvement.

If the price quoted is actually real, then surely we have to be interested given the number of players needed.
I’ve not watched him play and the reports of the player vary between a midfield destroyer and another version of Fred - if so, is he the risk worth taking? I think our options are limited at this price range but a regular for Athletico can’t be sniffed at.

Has been excellent for Ateltico, and the quoted price seems fair. I'm sure we are in the 'preparing a bid' stage

It's going to cost one arm and one leg, but we totally need an engine like this.

But beware. he's not going to solve the creativity problem.

His release clause is 43.5m pounds. Not really expensive by PL first team standards.

Nice!!! How did Atletico made such a rookie mistake? there are usually ruthless on the market, even when selling reserve players. What are we waiting for?

If the release clause is real then we should definitely be all over this. Very sensible replacement for Herrera.

Atletico are my 'second team' and I watch pretty much all of their games. Thomas is a good player, but he isn't what we need right now, we have bigger needs (i.e creativity).

I’d be happy with this signing only if we sign a Ruben Neves / Carrick type of player to add some creativity to the midfield from the deep. We can’t go into another season with Pogba as the only creative force from midfield, that would be disastrous.

I loved Juve’s setup with Pogba, Pirlo and Vidal. It was perfect, one playmaker in Pirlo, one B2B in Vidal and one creative attacking midfielder in Pogba. Right now we have Pogba as the only midfielder that is very creative. If we’re going to continue with Matic who usually takes too many touched and can only pass the ball sideways then Partey isn’t the right signing. Then we need someone like Kroos, Thiago or Bruno Fernandes next to Pogba.

And Partey isn’t really a defensive midfielder so I don’t think he can play in the Matic position, similar to McTominay.

We need drive. A spine. Plus finally finding a way to unlock Pogba would up out creativity anyway.
Not creating is a problem but getting completely overran and unable to get near sides who keep possession is an even bigger issue imo.

For that kind of money he is a no brainer. 30 years old Gueye would cost almost that sum.

Any time I've seen him play in the flesh I haven't been impressed. I think he'd be a step sideways on what we have already.
Yep, he's pretty much another Fred, in my eyes. Rather give that investment some more time before going for another one.

Surprised by the people that don't think this would be a good signing. He's not a creator yes, but he's a fantastic box to box midefielder, the kind of player that is tailor-made for the premier league similar Michael Essien when he was in his prime at Chelsea with the same ability to score some absolute bangers. Feast your eyes on these glary thunderbolts.

Those championing Neves at the base of our midfield, would you give Gomes a chance there?

Fernandes...Partey....
..........Gomes.......

Id be intrigued to see how that worked, two hard working players in front of him, one who has end product, one whos very physical with good passing and chips in with goals

Cue the Gomes cant play at the base...........

That would be an...interesting lineup choice, for two reasons. First, because Gomes is still so young it would be a fairly decisive career move to stick him as a holding mid when he has only really played AM so far. Second, while I can see what you are envisioning, something similar to the role Scholes played as he got older, you are skipping several steps in your analysis. First, Scholes started as a SS and slowly moved further back the pitch as he got older and his game developed. Gomes has good ball skills, vision, and passing ability, but he does not have the tools in his locker right now to step in and play the old Scholes role. Sticking him at the holding mid role would effectively nullify many of the best skills he possesses at this current time. We would be better off allowing his career to take a more natural trajectory and, if his passing game develops range and he is amenable to dropping deeper, then we may consider such a move. But to stick an unproven youngster at such a complex and important position in a team that is in the midst of a rebuild...it would be unwise.

Don't love Gomes' defensive awareness and his best quality seems to be striding forward and linking play, not really hitting longer passes and being error free.

I do like the idea of taking an 8 and making him a 6 like City did with Fernandinho, since it's easier to find 8s with the technical quality we should be looking for in a 6, as a big team that should dominate possession in most games. But maybe that player isn't in the Premiership at the moment.

He's too old for it to make sense for us, but I sort of think Aaron Mooy might be a Prem midfielder better suited to that role, might be worth exploring for a team like Leicester or Southampton. An interesting one for us might be Max Meyer, who failed at Palace, but did well at Schalke in that role. Presumably he's on high wages so him and Palace might be quite eager for a move.

I would rather we get Ceballos, not only if Pogba goes to Madrid but because Ceballos has got mad pressing skill to go with his creativity and passing skills. He is the kind of player Herrera was supposed to be for us but failed. I feel he's capable of replacing Herrera.
