Tarantino asks for critics at Cannes to refrain from spoiling the film.

https://www.indiewire.com/2019/05/q...upon-a-time-in-hollywood-spoilers-1202143055/

Uniformed speculation about the plot/ending of the film on my part based on what Tarantino has said publicly about the film:

We know that the film features Tate/Manson, we seem to see mansonites looking threatening in the trailer, we know it was originally intended to be released around the anniversary of that Tate killing, we know that Tate's sister approved of the film and we know that Tarantino has asked for people to avoid spoiling the film.

My guess is that the film ends with Tate surviving the film and Manson & his "family" being killed instead, revising history in much the same way that IB did. I can't imagine what other ending would simultaneously please Tate's sister while also having the potential to be spoiled (in a way that just not featuring the attacks wouldn't, for example), or that would allow Tarantino to indulge in his typical bloodbath shtick.

Unless the whole Manson thing is just a very small side part of the film, though that wouldn't gel with how the film is being presented at all.

Going to be the movie of the year IMO. Leo DiCaprio, Brad Pitt, Margot Robbie cast in a Tarantino film, you really can't ask for a better recipe for success.

I used to love all things Tarantino unconditionally. Some of his later works have been a bit shite though. Most notably hateful 8. Cast like that, it's bound to be entertaining though.

I thought Hateful 8 was pretty good. What didn't you like about it? Sure, the dialogue in the coach is a bit slow, but I actually grew into it and enjoyed the slow build-up to the orgy of violence.

IB, DU and HF8 have all been pretty good. IB is my favorite by far though.

I don't know. It might be me just being tired of Tarantino's shtick? Too much emphasis on it being slick and stylish and not enough emphasis on being an immersive piece of entertainment? I can't really put my finger on it. It's not Tarantino that changed, it's just me not liking it as much as I used to.

Maybe I'm just old and boring now.

Think I get what you are saying. Sometimes his self-absorbed/quirky style of filmmaking might wear some people out. I still enjoy his stuff though.

I lost interest in him as a film director when oddly enough I listened to his movie recommendations and started looking at his movie ''references''. His movies will always be a entertaining but nothing more.

This movie is gonna be the shit, hope to see a lot of Charlie. I expect that story is going to be significantly revised and am excited to see how Tarantino handles it.

Bitta foot action in the new trailer too if you're looking:drool:

This is how I felt with the last couple. It's like he's not evolving at all as a filmmaker and is just rehashing the same stuff (in terms of films dynamics, themes of predilection, characters...). If you're discovering Tarantino with Hateful 8 I'm sure it's fine, but if you've seen all his filmography, it's just meh, I feel.

Aye, I think his more lurid stylistic flourishes have disguised the fact that he's innately a rather conservative filmmaker.

Every Tarantino film since Pulp Fiction has been a disappointment to me.
I think Inglourious Basterds is his best film.

I enjoy all his films and wouldn’t describe any of them as a disappointment I don’t think. Hateful Eight and, especially, Death Proof are a bit weaker than his average, but they were broadly what I was expecting them to be. He is a pretty unique storyteller, so his films are still a bit of a breath of fresh air for me.

Is that because you have insanely high standard for them or something? Inglourious is an absolute belter. Don't think he's done a bad one really, though outside of Leo's ranting and raving, Django and Hateful weren't for me too much.

Actually I liked Django the best out of all his nonsense. His films are just silly really. Basterds was the worst.

Reservoir Dogs and Pulp Fiction had great dialogue and were understated in comparison.

I remember watching it and seeing Brad Pitt character pop up with the his neck scar thing and thinking well this is somewhat interesting I wonder if the movie will explore this detail in more depth. Maybe at one point he tried to kill himself, maybe he was going to be hanged for some crime, he escaped Nazi torture etc. But no it turns out it was just a reference to a old Clint Eastwood movie.

Tarantino movies are just someone going through their favourite vinyl records. Now granted its one hell of a record collection but does feel in the end like a complete waste of time, especially when that person has such a talent for writing dialogue.

“I wouldn’t take anything else out,” the director said. “I’m going to explore possibly putting something back in. If anything, I wanted to go to Cannes too short. if I’m going to err, I’m going to err on too tight.”

https://www.empireonline.com/movies...o-might-make-upon-time-hollywood-even-longer/

The fact that he's talking about adding more scenes to a film that is already 2h 40m long is a bad sign, especially coming from a man whose films are often indulgent and overlong anyway. Would it kill him to make a film that actually errs on the side of being too tight?

Why do you lot watch his films if you don't like it?

Anyone see it yet? Is it as good as the critics are saying?
Just watched a crappy rip of it at my friend's house. I liked it and would happily go see it once it is properly released. Though given I often have problems with Tarantino's films I wouldn't be surprised if his regular fanboys weren't so keen. Certainly not going to be the most immediate film for those who want tons of pulpy violence.

In terms of this:

A Tarantino film about Charles Manson has the potential to be absolutely hideous if he gives in to his worst, cartoonishly violent impulses.

A Tarantino film about Hollywood that just happens to feature Manson would be a lot more interesting as far as I'm concerned, especially if he manages to avoid some/any of his usual tropes.
It was much, much closer to the latter than the former. Surprisingly melancholic as Tarantino films go and maybe less surprisingly nostalgic.

Fantastic but dull and tedious, apparently.
Each to their own. I found it fascinating just for the shots of late 60s Hollywood alone, and so much effort and detail went into that I'd be amazed if this film didn't win the Oscar for Best Production Design.

I don't want to spoiler it by talking too much but one thing I will say is if you're planning to go watch it, read up about the Manson family murders beforehand so you understand what happened there (if you don't already).

My wit's end
It's got 85 on Metacritic and the Guardian review said:
Quite simply, I just defy anyone with red blood in their veins not to respond to the crazy bravura of Tarantino’s film-making, not to be bounced around the auditorium at the moment-by-moment enjoyment that this movie delivers – and conversely, of course, to shudder at the horror and cruelty and its hallucinatory aftermath.
On balance, I'm inclined to believe Tarrou.

Look it's Tarantino, so people are going to automatically assume it's a masterpiece. I didn't, I found it indulgent and meandering, and I didn't like the defined narrative - without giving the plot away I felt Robbie's character was pointless. Not a movie I'll see twice, unlike say Pulp Fiction which I've watched many many times.
Not much of a Tarantino fan at all but I really enjoyed this film, though I suspect it will prove unusually divisive among Tarantio fans. Though the muted reaction for his last film (which ended up with a score of 68 on metacritic) suggests critics generally aren't quite as primed to laud Tarantino as you suggest either.

As for Robbie's character, the plot was fairly irrelevant to the film generally so being at the periphery hardly makes her character pointless. Pretty much everything the film is about thematically (and, in the end, structurally) is centred around Tate. The film wouldn't make any real sense without her.

I found it indulgent and meandering, and I didn't like the defined narrative - just felt like Tarantino wanted to show off how much he knows about film history and how nostalgic the old Hollywood made him feel. The acting, cinematography were great, the storyline just wasn't there though. Without giving away the plot, characters didn't really develop Brad's the same throughout, Leo kinda changed halfway through with only narration as to why he was different and Margot Robbie was pointless. She says about 20 words at the end.

I wanted to love this so badly, but it felt flat.

I just don't get the point of this other than a lot of nostalgia and getting all his mates together for a laugh.

More self indulgent rubbish but
that scrap at the end makes it worth sitting through just for the flame thrower bit and the following conversation
other than that it’s a bit of a pointless movie.

He's taken a story that is actually creepy and compelling in real life and made it dull. It's just a bit of a lad-fest interspersed with cool scenes.

I think this one will divide opinion.

I really enjoyed it and the pay off works in the end, yet I don’t think I need to re-watch it again anytime soon.

That was excellent, definitely a film to rewatch again and again. Pitt and Di Caprio were brilliant and funny throughout. I get it might not be for everyone but I loved it.
