This starts mid June, seems to be getting little coverage and can't see a thread on here about it. Still always a good watch

England named their squad a few days ago

Gunn (Southampton) D. Henderson (Man. United) Woodman (Newcastle)

Clarke-Salter (Chelsea)
Da Silva (Bristol City/Chelsea)
L. Kelly (Bournemouth)
Kenny (Everton)
Konza (Brentford)
Tomori (Derby/Chelsea)
Wan Bisaka (Palace)

Barnes (Leicester)
Choudhury (Leicester
Maddison (Leicester)
Dowell (Everton)
Foden (Man. City)
Gibbs White (Wolves)
Mount (Derby/Chelsea)
Sessegnon (Fulham)

Abraham (Villa/chelsea)
Calvert Lewin (Everton)
Gray (Leicester)
Nelson (Arsenal/Hoffenheim)
Solanke (Bournemouth)

First thing that strikes me is how creative the midfield options. For so long England had workmanlike midfielders that we saw at last world cup still and yet this under 21 side is overflowing with forward thinking players. Really excited to see how Boothroyd lines up in that area.

Forward options aren't too bad, can play a 4-3-3 no problem. Defence only really has AWB as regular player at top level although guess you drop Sessegnon back to LB. Bit of a dearth of CBs at the moment in seems.

Anyway think England have decent chance of reaching the final.

Luka Jovic is playing in this tournament for Serbia btw. Haven't checked the other squads but there's always some full internationals dropping back, didn't Mata play in this years ago when he was already a regular Spanish international?

One final thing, Italy is mainly hosting this but San Marino get a couple of games. Please tell me they're actually entering a team as that would be brilliant to watch and might actually give them some hope they won't keep getting thrashed for forseeable future.

Wasn’t aware that Aouar, Tousart, Terrier and Reine-Adelaide were that young. Especially JRA, feels like he came through at Arsenal years ago!

Why our own Axel isn't selected?
Loyalty to the players that have played most in the qualifying I think. He's better than Clarke-Slalter and Konsa for me.

My major gripe is the omission of Reece James who is going to the Toulon with the under 20s which starts tomorrow. The options in midfield are light in my opinion.

I don't expect much from England here. We have a terrible manager that plays dinosaur British football and always has the side looking less than the sum of its parts. Sadly he's been given a new contract a week ago"

Unsure how Boothroyd has the job really, he goes against everything that England have been trying to implement in recent years. Always think the u21 side is pretty underwhelming given the talents it always has available under his tenure. On paper they are far ahead of almost every side they play yet they never really impress me.

They hired him because he had senior management experience. He gets way with it because they have the individual quality to win 95% of games but the team effort always looks poor as they do so. I have little faith in England beating one of the very top nations in the competition.

Its probably the best u21 squad I can remember too.

This is 96 and up right? Seems England's got unusually many players playing for the seniors already in this age group. Almost an entire team that's not travelling (although some might have, if not for injuries): TAA, Maitland-Niles, Gomez, Chilwell, Winks, Alli, Loftus-Cheek, Sancho, Rashford, Hudson-Odoi.

Shame really, would be nice to see them under a progressive manager.

Danes are a decent dark horse for this. They were excellent in qualifying bar a couple of blips. Were missing some better players for the friendlies v England and Spain as well. Assuming all the big guns are there for it this time.

Seems quite an underwhelming bunch (on paper at least) after the excitement at the younger levels recently.

Anyone know why Nicolò Zaniolo is not in the Italy provisional squad? Thought he was one of their most promising prospects, injured?

In the first team now, same as Kean. He'd probably have been at the u20 World Cup instead of this anyway.

Incredible thing with France is if they wanted to likes of Coman, Ousmane Dembele and Tanguy Ndombele are all still eligible for this I think but they've been called up to full squad.

Pavard and Luca Hernandez are 23 so wasn't sure if their DOBs made the cut off or not.

Can you imagine that though....Dembele-Mbappe-Coman as the front 3 for this tournament. They should've done it for a laugh given they'll qualify easily for euro 2020.

The cut-off is January 1st 1996 so they're all eligible.

Really? That's the strongest area of the team. You have Maddison who's had a brilliant season with Leicester, likes of Choudhury and Barnes looked good in the run in for Leicester as did Foden when he got a chance and Gibbs White looks a terrific talent coming through although he didn't see a lot of gametime for Wolves from about March. Mason Mount is a terrific prospect aswell.

It's a very forward thinking and technical midfield, great for senior side in 2-3 years as obviously that was an area with lack of options in last WC.

England's problem will be struggling at the back I think. Konza and Tomori are decent CBs but that's just in the championship and don't really know much about Lloyd Kelly or Clarke-Salter.

I assume under 21s play a 4-2-3-1 which is a shame as if you had more options at CB a 3-5-2 would really give licence for AWB and Sessegnon to push on as wing backs and still retain 3 in midfield.

I'm talking proper centre midfielders. He's has been shoehorning Maddison and Foden is a 3 with Dowell. That's essentially three attack minded midfielders. Choudhury is the only defensive midfielder in the squad and he's limited on the ball. The midfield is completely unbalanced if you ask me. Mount, Foden, Gibbs-White, Dowell and Maddison are advanced players. He's been using Dowell as a DLP which is fine against teams that sit in but completely ineffective against teams with a pulse. Maddison has looked extremely poor for the 21s in this set-up. I'm very cautious about getting excited about the names in this squad after seeing the team play in qualifying.

Dowell hasn't played much this season at Sheffield, surprised he's started.

Choudhury did well in the run in for Leicester, he's the DM with Foden and Maddison ahead I suspect.

Has anyone been following the toulon tournament at all? Brazil's squad is comfortably the best ever to play in it. Might even be the best youth side I've ever seen, loads of them with plenty experience across good leagues in Europe. Not had to get out of 1st gear all comp (albeit most of the sides have poor squads).

Germany:
Florian Müller - Mainz
Alexander Nübel - Schalke
Markus Schubert - Dresden

Waldemar Anton - Hannover
Timo Baumgartl - Stuttgart
Benjamin Henrichs - Monaco
Lukas Klostermann - Leipzig
Lukas Klünter - Berlin
Maximilian Mittelstädt - Berlin
Jonathan Tah - Leverkusen
Felix Uduokhai - Wolfsburg

Nadiem Amiri - Hoffenheim
Mahmoud Dahoud - Dortmund
Maximilian Eggestein - Bremen
Robin Koch - Freiburg
Eduard Löwen - Nürnberg
Arne Meier - Berlin
Florian Neuhaus - Gladbach
Levin Öztunali - Mainz
Marco Richter - Augsburg
Suat Serdar - Schalke

Johannes Eggestein - Bremen
Lukas Nmecha - Preston
Luca Waldschmidt - Freiburg

I think that's a fairly decent squad for a u21, the only thing truly missing are quality wingers. A fair amount of players with CL experience: Nübel, Henrichs, Klostermann, Tah, Amiri, Dahoud, Serdar

This is the first time time France have qualified since 2006  They're in the same group as England and only first place is guarantee to go through. Should be interesting.

What's wrong with Italy though? Basically nominating everyone but Donnarumma? Multiple players with a bunch of caps for the "men"?

I mean Germany could also line up Kehrer, Sane, Havertz, Werner, Brandt, France could go completely berserk and I'm sure other nations like Spain could add plenty of players as well.

But that's not the spirit of the competition is it?

Didn't followed but not dismissing what you said, a team with Rogerio who already belongs to Juventus and played on Sassuolo during the season, Matheus Cunha from Leipzig who I expect him to play more for them this season or Wendel from Sporting only to name a few is a high quality squad, but a lot of these players are part of their under 23 squad, while France and Portugal played today for the 5th/6th place, one with the under 18 team and the other with the under 19 squad who will play next month at Euro under 19.

Having said that, of course Brazil has always individual talent, even if some of their youth teams have been a real mess on recent years. They missed 4 consecutive under 20 WC's and I seriously doubt the other countries on South America who are finishing ahead them have more individual quality than them, but that is another matter for other topic.

Home tournament and they’ve been down in the dumps lately so I think there going all out to win it. I kind of wish England would take some senior players but they never will. Spain have done it in the past among other countries.

I followed England but they were terrible. From winning it 3 times in a row to losing all three group games but winning their playoff to finish 9th. The squad had some poor players in it but some good ones too, they underperformed overall. Dwight McNeil, Eddie Nketiah and Reece James stood out at times. James suffered a bad injury on a terrible pitch unfortunately and will be out for 3 months.

The French squad is pretty stacked but they’re badly coached and often underperform. The lost their warmup game 3-1 to Austria with a strong side out.

England are the same though. Terrible coach and despite the talent in the squad the always play poorly. I can see us going out at the group stage here.

Have Spain really done it? 2017 for example had some really highly rated players, but I don't think they had about 40 senior caps between them, like the current Italy squad.

No offense, but I feel like England always overrate themselves. "Look at that lad and that lad, he's really talented", then it turns out a lot of English kids are living off of cameos or playing Championship (sometimes perhaps even PL2?!) and shock surprise the kids from Germany and Spain who have 100 Bundesliga/La Liga matches under their belt are more mature and do better.

The spirit of the competition is to win it. It is a competition of fully grown adults 23 years old and under. It isn't u17s.

Over 50% of Spain's squad for the last tournament had senior caps as well. Germany had 10 in 2015. So not sure why you're acting like they don't do it too.

Italy 2019:
Chiesa - 13
Pellegrini - 10
Barella - 7
Kean - 3
Zaniolo - 2
Mancini - 2
Cutrone - 1
Mandragora - 1

39 caps.

Spain 2017:
Asensio - 3
Bellerin - 3
Deulofeu - 3
Saul - 3
Oyarzabal - 1
Suarez - 1
Williams - 1

15 caps.

Clearly for other nations it is not the goal to win it at all cost. Otherwise Germany would line up with: Sane, Havertz, Werner, Brandt and Kehrer or France with guys like Mbappe, Dembele, Lucas, Ndombele, Coman and Pavard or England with Sancho, Alli, Rashford, TAA.

It's more or less about having a competition for young players who aren't yet fully established internationals.

I think that the experience thing is important and Germany do have a lot more top league apps than us but there is plenty of Premier League experience in our squad. The Championship is a good level too. The best Championship sides would hold their own in the BL IMO and are as good as Erdivisie sides outside their top 3. We don't have any PL2 players in the squad! Worth noting too that you're taking Lukas Nmecha who was at least 2 selections away from the England u21 side before he switched to Germany. He's also had a completely unremarkable season in The Championship this year. That said, we do have a much younger squad than we usually do this time and guys like Gibbs-White and Foden have only played bit part roles in senior football so far. Perhaps that's better than having 23 year old James Milner types in the squad though.

Boothroyd is a terrible coach, no matter who we play we play badly (but usually win). He's a failed senior manager and an old school British dinosaur, his only game plan is to get it to the wide players and get them to cross it in. Guys like Maddison look terrible under him but have looked fantastic against big sides like City in the PL this season. There's zero balance to our midfield. There's only one defensive minded midfielder in the squad. We actually beat this Italy side 2-1 at their place recently but its always a case of relying on the talents to come up with moments, something which seems unsustainable over the course of an elite level tournament.

I think the bolded part is highly debatable and I personally, following Bundesliga closely and having watched bits of the Championship wouldn't agree with that statement at all, it's also not like every one of them is playing for the top sides there is it?

Nmecha is by far the lowest rated player in the squad, he has probably been called up because of Germany's (by now) historic weakness at the no9 position, actually playing there will be Waldtschmidt who has 80 Bundesliga games to his name and played a fairly decent season for Freiburg.

I can't argue on the level of England's coaching (aside from the fact that other nations don't have top coaches either), I just sometimes get the feeling that the English live in a bit of a bubble, fawning over what kids do in the Championship or in some part time work, while their continental counterparts are already halfway to being seasoned pros.

Looking at the ages of the squads Germany and Spain are the oldest in the comp so they will have more experience, although the facts show that English player get less minutes as a general trend anyway.

Germany

6 x 23 years
10 22 years
5 x 21 years
2 x 20 years

England

1 x 23 years
6 x 22 years
10 x 21 years
2 x 20 years
4 x 19 years

Italy

4 x 23 years
7 x 22 years
7 x 21 years
2 x 20 years
3 x 19 years

Spain

4 x 23 years
15 x 22 years
3 x 21 years
1 x 20 years

France

4 x 23 years
7 x 22 years
6 x 21 years
6 x 20 years

I'm not really saying much against kids who got a couple of cameos to their name, but each of those three probably has more senior caps than Germany's or France's entire squads.

And it's not like Italy are augmenting a bit, they are basically using everyone they can, aside from Donnarumma, aren't they?

As I've already said I think that goes completely against the spirit of the competition and I also think it's a bit short sighted to rob those players of their summer break and a full pre season, just so some guys at the FA can hope pretend to actually have a good youth setup.

Didn't Mata play it one year after being a regular in senior team? I'm fairly sure they had a player in 2011 tournament that had played a few minutes in 2010 World cup, may have been Javi Martinez but not 100%.

Edit: Didn't see @Classical Mechanic post who's answered it all.

Still disappointed San Marino aren't in this...have they built a new stadium for this?
