I don't think its goodwill with Trippier and Delph. They're both big characters in the dressing room so that's why they're going I think.

Lingard is also very popular and helps with the good vibes Southgate likes. Also the system we are playing at the moment incorporates and accommodates Alli and Lingard is the natural understudy to him playing wise.
Sad state of affairs if people are getting picked due to how they are in the dressing room as opposed to performances on the pitch though.

I disagree. I think having a united, happy and motivated squad is invaluable. I think it's arguably the biggest reason why England look much better in recent times. Team spirit is massively important, especially in tournament football where the players are confined together for much longer than usual.

Trippier, Delph, Lingard & Redmond over Wan Bissaka, Shaw, Maddison & Loftus-Cheek is an absolute joke.

Trippier is living off 3 good games in the World Cup. feck, I'd put Foden in over Lingard.
"Squawka Football have revealed on Twitter that Kieran Trippier was actually the highest performing Premier League right-back last season in terms of chances created. ... carved 49 separate chances for Tottenham throughout the season, showing that he still has plenty to offer the North London side."

Not sure why you mention Shaw. He doesn’t deserve a call up and the LBs in the squad are better. (Chillwell and Rose)

Redmond is an interesting call up. There was a bit of chatter of him switching to ROI, something he said he was open to. If he plays in either game he’ll be cap tied.

Maddison and AWB will be going to the U21s Euros this summer hence why they've not been picked. Doubt they would be starting for England anyway (though Maddison has a good case)

Assuming everyone is fit I think Southgate will go with:

Pickford
Walker, Stones, Maguire, Chilwell
Rice
Winks, Dele
Sancho, Kane, Sterling
I could see him favouring Henderson for one either Winks or Rice though. I don't like Dele there but with RLC out and Maddison not there might be the best move

Winks had an operation I thought? No doubts he should be there if fit, better than Henderson and Dier midfield. Shaw vs Rose, Rose has had an excellent last 6 months, back to the peak of his form before his injury troubles.

Kane, Sterling I dont think any arguments over those two. I hate seeing Dier - Henderson midfield, just offers too little going forward. Alli has been average this season, a few amazing games mixed in with a lot of average. Who partners Kane and Sterling in attack? Rashford? Sancho? Other?

He hasn't played due to injury for some time was my issue, not debating he's a good player.
I reckon they feel he may be close to fitness and will assess him to see if he can make the games - same as Kane. I don't expect either to play.

The big problem England have is

Kane
Winks
Alli
Trippier
Rose
Henderson
Alexander Arnold
Dier
Gomez

Are all going to be involved in the CL final 5 days before the game against Holland. When they eventually join up with England, some of them will be in very low spirits and some will have been partying and on cloud 9. Questionable if any will be in the right fame of mind to play.

This is why Ajax purposely sacrificed their CL run in favor of the Nation's league. They really meant it when they endlessly touted that they're doing everything to further Dutch football!

Now Wijnaldum and VVD just have to sit out the CL final and we're golden.

If Ajax had made the final it would have been much worse for Holland than it is for England as Ajax contribute so many.

England could play whilst resting all the CL finalists.

-----------------Pickford---------------
Walker---Stones---Maguire---Chilwell
-----------------Rice--------------------
--------Barkley---------Lingard--------
Sancho-------------------------Sterling
---------------Rashford-----------------

Midfield is a bit sketchy but the rest is decent enough.

Holland without Ajax would be pretty naked.

Maddison definitely deserves a chance I think - possibly Wan Bissaka also though I'm sure they will get their chance soon. Shaw I think would struggle to get into the squad right now and Loftus-Cheek is injured.

I agree with you on Trippier (can only be from goodwill from world cup - he has been a disaster all season), Delph (just not good enough), Lingard (see Trippier). Redmond has had a decent season but I don't think he is good enough really - perhaps just shows a lack of depth in that position?
Letting Zaha opt for Ivory Coast is starting to look mighty stupid now haha. Honestly, I'd rather go with Andros Townsend if we need a back-up winger. At least he's got worldies in his locker. Bring him on with 10 minutes to go if we're behind and just tell him to shoot. Would be a better bet than Redmond.

Lingard over Maddison is the most baffling call. Trippier, for all his faults, is at least a good crosser, good on dead balls & had an exceptional world cup so you can understand the loyalty. Lingard had an ok world cup, can't cross, can't pass, can't finish, and can score from 25 yards once every 15 games or so. Unbelievable somebody as limited as him is a Man United starter and regular fixture in the England team.

Anyway, I'm guessing we'll see lineups similar to this

Pickford, Walker, Stones, Maguire, Chilwell, Henderson, Dier, Sancho, Alli, Sterling, Rashford

Cilesson, Dumfries, van Dijk, de Ligt, Blind, Wijnaldum, de Jong, van de Beek, Bergwijn, Promes, Depay

Should be a fun even game on paper. Three really good young teams in these two and Portugal involved in this, actually looking forward to it. If Kane is fit I expect him in for Sancho, with a reshuffle of Rashford out wide. I'd rather Winks or Rice or Barkley, or pretty much anyone start over Dire Dier, but they probably won't. Babel starting over Promes wouldn't surprise me either, although he shouldn't.

2-1 Holland anyway.

Why?

Sterling, Sancho, Hudson-Odoi are going to be first choice wide forwards for England going forward and Sessegnon, Gray and Bowen will be pushing the senior team in the next couple of years.

England are well stoked in that area - even Redmond as a substitute can be effective although I doubt he'd get much game time regardless.

Delph again? Redmond? I mean, what? No Maddison? Come on, Gareth. He argues for Rose and Chilwell deserving it because they've been better than Shaw, but where's the meritocracy when it comes to Maddison, when he's been miles better than Redmond?

I can see Southgate being one of those boys club manager's who just picks players because he likes them as people in the dressing room.

Right now Zaha is the 2nd best of all the players you listed.

Our midfield looks pretty weak. I'm thinking the likes of Mount, Choudhury, Gibbs-White and Foden (expect Maddison to do so) are the ones in the u21s who may breakthrough into the seniors next season.

Winks' injury problems are a shame for us too.

Will Southgate bench him or does Harry dictate terms like he does for his club?

Surely bringing him on with 30 minutes left is the best bet here?

Would start Sancho-Rashford-Sterling.

Rashford had dreadful end to the season but he has been good for England this year.

That’s what I’d go for. I’d be hesitant to play any of the Champions League final players really.

I've place my money on Engerland to win this stuff. I think if they pass Holland they will win it.

Surprised Nathan Redmond not in the squad now .

Not that I think he is England class or would have a lot of caps for England but I expected England to tie him to them as Ireland are looking for him to choose them

I think we should call up Redmond, bring him on for 5 minutes to make sure he's tied to us for life and never play him again.

Just to banter the Irish fans.

Surely Portugal are favourites on their own patch?

With so many of our squad being involved in the Champions League final I think it puts us in a weird place. How many of them will be focused properly on the job?

I’ll be interested to see what team Southgate picks for the first game.
