Where will he play though. Not worried as he is not better than Mane or Salah or Firminho.
Apparently Mane wasn't good enough when he was strongly linked to United. Pepe would be a good addition to their already scary attacking options.
He's a good player I don't see why we aren't interested, it's bad enough being rejected (possibly) by Sancho. We need to go into next season with a natural winger down the right.
We have the kick and run specialist from the championship coming in. Relax

Common Pepe will be a star for Pool if they get him. I wonder why we seem a little lethargic in doing our transfer business.

Pepe is a good option beside Sancho as RW i agree. Pepe has that high confidence mentality with him. And i think he is delivering on a high level too. So again, Pepe is a good RW option.

I think we'll buy Sancho next summer if we are back in the CL through the league or winning the Europa.

Rather wait and get Sancho tbh. We can't improve every area of the team this summer anyway. Get defence sorted needs to be the priority. And a new striker if and when Lukaku/Sanchez leave.

Nope. Balance needs to be sorted first. We cannot ignore our right side any longer. In the last 8 years, the only right winger we have signed is Valencia. And no right back really since Rafael. We can sign the best players in the world, but they would even look bad if we lack width on both sides. No wonder we never have space to attack like Liverpool and city do!

Can't you read? I said sort the defence. That includes right back, Sherlock.

Also Daniel James has signed. He will be the only winger we get this summer. Sancho coming next year.

James should be considered as a backup player at the very best. Even if he was an instant success his best games came on the LW. If James is indeed the only winger we're getting then we must embrace ourselves to yet another season with a non functional RW.

I agree with the defence part! But hasn't Solskjaer reportedly told Young he will be an integral part of the team next season?
Daniel james should not be a regular starter, he plays best left wing and is rarely played on the right. Giggs has also said his best position is left wing!
Sancho, how are you so sure we will even make the Champions League next season!

I'm not sure. But if we do make it we will get him is my hunch. We have two routes back in too.

Also.....our fans need to realise we are not going to solve every single problem position in one summer. It's not happening.

How many more threads are you going to moan about James in?
I get the feeling it is Chelsea but depends on if they decide to appeal to get their ban frozen this window.
I thought they appealed yesterday? (but ban stands for now?) Not 100%, don't always believe the internet.

He's still 21 and he had never played in the EPL. His stats at the Championship are nowhere near to those of Sessegnon who struggled in the EPL big time. Also note that he played most of his game as LW and we've already got Martial there. It would be irresponsible from us to rely on him as a first teamer.

I don't think we will be relying on him. But he will play a lot of games.

What I think the problem here is you believe we are title challengers. We aren't. Next few years is about building something for future.

You need to accept we are also rans for next few years. Top 4 hopefuls. James will play his part with Lingard, Mata etc.

I surely hope so and I wouldn't mind if James is Sanchez replacement. Both are LWs and the latter has done feck all which means that replacing him with someone young and hungry like James would make sense. Under such circumstances Martial might even try and run a bit more considering that the guy who will competing for a role will be eyeing for his first team place rather then that final pay cheque.

Having said that, it would be irresponsible to expect James to sort the RW problem. He's inexperienced, he'll need time to adapt in the EPL and most of the games he played were as a LW. Which means we need a top quality RW, unless of course, we want to spend yet another season with a non existent RW lead by has been (Mata) and the talentless Peter Pan who never grows up.

I think the biggest problem here, and something Ole has brainwashed people into thinking, is that we need a massive rebuild. Is that the board speaking in terms of investment or Ole's lack of confidence as a manager of a top top club.
Watch Real Madrid go and win the league season after a transfer window that we should be aiming for! Rebuild my ass! Man utd should be challenging for the league every season, not lowering expectations because of a Jose Mourinho who managed to give that impression. 3rd season melt down after finishing 2nd last year!
Now all of a sudden Ole will be our saviour, but it will take a good 3-5 years! Jesus!

Already stated they will be honouring the ban whilst appealing.

From what I had read, they appealed but as of now the ban stands as they didn't appeal that specifically but they still could appeal it. Not seen any statement from them that they definitely won't look to have that frozen.

Seriously? Ole has brainwashed us into thinking we need a rebuild? Most of us signalled this years ago. Every transfer window we call for more players to be signed than we end up doing. Yet somehow you manage to blame Ole, who himself has said he expected 3-4 new signings. It's the people on here calling for 10 in 10 out not Ole

And you do realize Real Madrid are probably going to sign more players than we are this summer? And more expensive ones at that? They are pretty much doing a rebuild themselves.

James is a nobody from the Championship. To expect him to be anything other than a backup player to begin with is pure delusion. Like you said, even Sessegnon struggled this season with much more impressive stats.

We should be all over Pepe. He even drifts into the box adding goals too. It makes too much sense at £70mil.

We might as well sack Ole now if he's seriously happy to go into next season with James & Mata/Lingard as RW options.

Yeah, brainwashed into thinking we need a rebuild that will take years. I'll say it again, we need to sort our structure of the team, we need a top right back, and a top right winger. What we have lacked these last few years, is balance. Instead we have stock piled left wingers. Our right side has been non existent for 6 years. Get that right, we all of a sudden have a functioning team, that will bring the best out of your Pogba's, Martial's and maybe Lukaku.
I blame Ole, cause our bloody rebuild has started with yet another left winger! Liverpool on paper have a crap midfield, but it works cause they have a balance, and more importantly width through their full backs and inverted wingers!

Need a left footed RW/RF. We have Greenwood already but I wouldn't mind us adding a starter like Pepe because it's a place we currently have no one.

Rashford - Martial (f9) - Pepe

Competition

James - Sancho next sesn (f9) - Greenwood

It does take years. A functional team=/= a winning, successful team. Even Klopp took at least 2 years, and lets not forget the work Rodgers had done before him, laying the foundations and instlling a fast counter attacking style that made the transition to Klopps system that much easier. It will take us some time to find or develop our style and that is included in the rebuild phase, not just team building.

Where is this 3-4 new signings coming from? Why would you even want to handicap yourself if there are reasonable targets available?

There's actually a lot of decent value options available:

Aldeweireld £25mil
Pepe £70mil
Meunier £25mil
Rabiot free
James £20mil

~£150mil adding in Rabiot' agent/signing-on fees

If Lukaku leaves, cheaper replacement = save money.
If Pogba leaves, cheaper replacement = Bruno £80mil will be much less than Pogba fee.

How is that unrealistic?

Everyone will have you believe it's going to be a 3 years rebuild though.

It's not hard, if we mean business this summer.

Laying the foundations? Rodgers? If I'm not mistaken, the only players left from the Rodgers era are Henderson and Milner! I don't think Rodgers signed Milner either!
So the foundations you're talking about are not even there! Why are we not going out and splashing on players that will make a difference like Pepe?
We should also note that the utd way is indeed a good way to go. But only if you have top players to compliment those younger ones.
Sounds to me that people want to go with the narrative of replacing your Pogba's with your Longstaff's, Maddison etc. It's the wrong the Wrong narrative!

We're desperately in need of a starter RW.

I don't know how people can be happy with just James. Even his best games came on the left! :nervous:

Greenwood is a young kid so shouldn't be relied upon yet. He needs to come into a stable team ideally.

To go into next season with just James/Mata/Lingard as RW options would be criminal wouldn't it?

I definitely agree with you about the importance of adjusting expectations, but I think United's focus needs to be on solidifying itself as a champions league regular, not developing young players.

And I'm not saying I think they should be looking to sign older players. I think the focus should be on finding guys who are entering their prime and can improve the starting 11, help implement Ole's preferred style, and set a good example in the locker room.

I don't think a period of big transition is the right time to be relying on a young player like James. I wouldn't say signing him is a bad thing, but if it's distracting them from making progress with guys who can improve the starting 11, then I would say it's not a wise way of using their resources.

You don't build a new team in one summer. You're right that we need a new RB and RW. That will improve our team for sure. But you're delusional is you think that will fix our team. How will that bring the best out of the laziest player in our squad? Martial need only look at himself to improve. Our midfield lacks balance too, our CBs aren't good enough.. You mention Liverpool. It took them 2 years under Klopp to get where they are now. Besides, James can play on the right too. And Martial could do with some competition since Rashford will primarily be used as a striker and Alexis is past it. But go ahead and blame Ole after one signing. I'm sure you'll feel much better.

It's fair to say I don't think he is the right man to take us forward! I don't think he is ruthless enough, like Pep and klopp and even poch were in getting rid of the dead wood. Mata being offered a new deal despite being bang average is testament to that!
Nobody was talking about a massive rebuild last summer when we finished 2nd. We expected the norm of 3-4 signings to get closer to City. 3-4 is not a rebuild, it's what is expected at this club!
Mourinho didn't get his own way last summer cause he was targeting 29 year olds!

You shouldn't have to explain this to fellow UTD fans mate. It's pretty good damn obvious that we need to spend big this summer. We need a squad rebuild and I dont get the whole narrative of buying too many players and us not 'gelling.'

We have 7 deadwood players that need to go, and Sanchez and Lukaku that we can recoup money for. (Not alot in Sanchez case) And we should be ruthless this transfer window or we will absolutely find ourself in a 2 or 3 year rebuild process.

Get it done now and ship out the shite!!

You're right, we didn't expect to need more than 4 new players. But then again we didn't expect Herrera to leave, we didn't expect Matic to go downhill this fast and we didn't expect Sanchez to be this shite. Sometimes things don't go the way you expect them to. Anyway, we're taking this thread off topic. When it comes to Pepe, I don't expect him to come because it looks like he's had his heart set on joining Bayern for months now. Think he's their backup option to Sane.

That's taking it too far. He's an international after all. I think he should be consider him as a backup player at first then move accordingly.

However we should be adding a top RW irrespective of James. He's a LW and we need new blood on the right.

Honestly Pepe is a good enough replacement for Lukaku.... Also, Pepe can play as a RW which we've lacked. Pepe/ James as a RF and Martial/ Rashford as a LF would be a decent front line with a No.10 behind them (could be Bruno or Felix).

Maybe nobody is a bit too harsh. I didn't mean to be derogatory towards him. Just trying to be realistic. Like you say, LW is where he has been the most comfortable also.

I'm on the same page as you, with us needing a top RW.

Someone like Pepe brings a lot to us. He as a direct left-footed RW is very valuable for one. Add in his runs in behind, the fact that he offers a big goal threat & can play up-front with Rashford is just what we're looking for.

Well worth the reported £70m.
