Bruno already got deployed this way in a diamond setup against Switzerland and wasn't up for it. He's at his best either as a no 10 or with the license to roam around and foray forward while the defensive midfielders cover for for him in a 433 setup like he did against Netherland.

Bruno and Pogba are cut from the same cloth. They loves to roam either as a no 10 or in the midfield. They won't work as a no 8 in a diamond midfield.
No bloody harm if Pogba has competition then. If he is going to stay, there is nothing to stop us from having more depth in terms of goal-scoring midfielders.

AWB- Lindeloff - Maguire - Shaw
---------------------Matic ------------------
-------Rabiot ----------------Pogba-----
----------------------Bruno------------------
------------Martial ----- Rashford-----

Rabiot will stay at PSG now Leonardo has returned! I think we will sign 2 players in James and AWB, and then it will be a sell before you buy scenario. Pogba is the only player we have that has any kind of interest in him!

One of the main reasons I want Bruno is so we can be in a position to actually drop Pogba if his level drops like it did again at the end of the season.

Point being - he was not playing at the tip of the diamond.

@SportingCP96 can you please confirm this. I was referring to your post that he was deployed in the right.
It was a 442 formation.

He played RM and Bernardo Silva left mid but he had more freedom to move.

Was not a diamond Portugal don’t and have never played in a diamond they have played in 433 and 442 under santos.

Versus Switzerland it was a flat 4 in the middle with Neves and William side by side and Bruno deployed in the right. Was a tactical decision by santos to use Bruno ability to whip the ball in to get it in dangerous areas to Ronaldo and Felix. Every time he got the ball wide his first intention was to cross it which seemed like an instruction from the coach.

It was a diamond midfield with Bernardo Silva at the tip of the diamond behind Ronaldo and Felix.

That was not it at all. Portugal have never played the diamond with santos. Silva was always on the left he would drift in side like he Always does and Bruno was on the right . Silva would pop up on the right at times as well.

Silva has played 95% of his Portugal games out wide and not down the middle.

That was what was deployed against Switzerland. Bernardo was practically in the middle behind Ronaldo and Felix while Fernandes was behind them in the midfield. Where did Bernardo play against Switzerland if it was 442 with Fernandes on the right?

I just told you. Fernandes was in the right and Silva on the left BUT Silva has freedom to roam because he is known to drift inside even at Man city. A few times he also popped up on the right and Fernandes would move inside while Ronaldo would drift left.

You got it wrong. It was a diamond with Bernardo at the tip.

If anything it was closer to a 4222 then a diamond. Portugal Always plays with wide players.

Just look at the game again. William and Neves played in a flat 4.

Its interesting because I saw no logic in selling Pogba however we are looking to build a team. But with some of the talent out there it might make sense to move Pogba and De Gea.

Then we can look to bring in:

Oblak
Mcguire/De Light
Berge/Longstaff/Partey/Havertz
Bruno/Maddison
Haller
And we need someone at RWB (not sure about Wan Bissaka)

Now this is complete muppetry and risky, and its about going for the devil you dont know rather than the devil you do. However you see how much squad movement we have had relative to our rivals since 2015 and we do need big clearouts and additions. Now if we could do/fund all that and keep Pogba I would be happy but there is a scenario where he goes to fund a big squad shake up.

That's the thing with a diamond setup. The two midfielders in front of the CDM need to be mobile and cover every blade, even the wide areas as well.

Did not watch much of the game, but the heat map support this.

I am telling you he was out wide for most of the game. The midfield was a flat 2 of William and Neves and a flat 4 when you take into account Silva and Bruno outwide.

He was in the midfield and even had more touches than Bernardo and almost the same touches as Carvalho who both finished the game.

He played on the right of the central midfield in a diamond setup, what did you expect from such setup? Of course, he would be required to move wide as a right sided central midfielder. You can''t expect him to operate as a central no 10 or the way he operated as a free roaming player against Netherland. Common.

Ok we are just going to keep going back and forth so I’ll just agree to disagree. All I will say is never under Santos have Portugal played in a diamond they always have wide players from the youth teams all the way up to the senior team. Ronaldo is mostly out wide in Portugal except in the last part of the attack. Bruno was outwide but would come inside sometimes because that is his nature and what he is used to since it is his natural position. He was clearly instructed to be wide and play in the right mid position with orders to cross the ball.

That Santos had never deployed a diamond setup doesn't mean he won't. He's a coach first and foremost. And also, he had to include Felix, Silva and Bruno Fernandes in the central. The diamond setup was the best to play all of them.

The problem is you're viewing Fernandes with the eyes of a roaming midfielder like a no 10 in a diamond setup, which shouldn't be.

No I am viewing Fernandes and Silva in the context of the game I saw. What I saw was

1. Bruno and Silva started out wide in the game with a front 2 of Felix and CR7.

2. Portugal deployed a flat 4 with Neves and William side by side.

3. Silva had license to cut inside and free roam to create spaces and passing options.

4. When Silva would drift off to the right Ronaldo would drop off to the left leaving young Felix is the central figure while Bruno will tuck inside.

5. Bruno Fernandes was clearly instructed to cross first when given the chance.

Lastly Santos is very very very pragmatic and would not randomly switch to a diamond formation for the first time when he never did so in the over 30 games he has had for Portugal. Especially not In a semi final.

Contrary to your view, I saw Silva in the final third more than Fernandes while Fernandes was often found deep in the midfield, on the right side.

I know you did because he was given license to free roam. Bruno was told to stay wide.

Lads if you want to know which formation is deployed watch how the team positions itself in the defensive transition. First half against Switzerland was a clear 433. Neves as a center or defensive mid but with William as a left sided pivot and Bruno on the right which forced both of the later to play in the channels and limit their game. For William it worked quite well because he's a good ball carrier but Bruno needs more freedom and license to get forward.

Bernardo was playing as a false forward, dropping deep from the center while Ronaldo and Felix played as left and right forwards but exchanged positions later on.

the portuguese player dreams of the Premier League.United has made an important offer and has a deal with Sporting, now they try to negotiate with the agent (they still seek agreements on various commissions and fees). The Spurs are trying to enter in the business.

Edit: Same Tier 1 (for Milan news) chap who is really doubling down on this.

This is all bollocks I suspect. The Portuguese press have been trying to shop this guy all over the PL.

Doubt we are interested personally. Ole has turned into a member of the ERG for a start.

The guy reporting it the Dimarzio for Milan news, hardly ever reports on other teams, I doubt he would want to damage his rep by trolling another team with fake info.

Has anyone in the last 10 pages of this thread not thought to mention that we are not AC fecking Milan?
