We just never turn up now. Woodward stewardship has turned us into a poor footballing club with no philosophy what ao ever other than clueless scatter gun.

Mind you, we used to be the underdogs against Liverpool, especially in 1977, 1979, and 1985. We always seemed to get a cup result against them, though they did beat us at Wembley in 1983.
Probably wouldn't have done if the Referee hadn't bottled sending Grobbelaar off for his assault on the already hobbling Gordon McQueen in the last minute.

We sure were, then the 90's arrived and SAF just completely flipped the script. Not sure why we didn't kick on after 1999 and win atleast one more CLwith that squad. Apart from the fact teams were desperate to beat the big dogs as they still are to this day, hence why Barca have fecked up badly since 2015 also.
We have underachieved in the European Cup for many a long year. I was discussing the 1965-66 season earlier and we were dead certs to reach that final, but Partizan beat us. Same against Monaco, Dortmund, and Leverkusen. Losing to Barca in Rome was no disgrace but failing to learn our lesson from that in 2011 raised a lot of questions. Liverpool have won six and been losing finalists, what, three times? That's some boast and maybe they'll be 20-6 or maybe more, by the time we get our act together (something Bill Shankly used to worry about in the early 70s, but needlessly).

This is true. Gobbleshite was a dirty bastard and got away with loads back then. Refs loved Liverpool.

Are we good at anything? We have no redeeming quality.
That really isn't the point of this thread and it's silly to come in here with that comment. It's been done and discussed. Not a moaning thread at all.

I think people are overthinking this. Cup matches utilizing your luck with the quality that you've got. Being any of the big teams and getting knocked out by any other big team in 1 or 2 legs isn't shit. There's a lot of little things that can get in the way of a win but those little things are getting fewer now with VAR. Not many controversies you can point at now with the current winners or how other teams got knocked out but we've had plenty of times in the past in the CL alone where the refs have made a giant impact on who goes through.

I would mention that there a different requirements between the cup competitions and the league games. I prefer a pragmatic approach like France in the WC 2018 or Real under Ancelotti and Zidane in the CL. Liverpool had (only) 50 % possession on average in the CL, while ManCity had 60 %, Barca 59 % and Paris 57 %. 15 teams (!) had more shots on the target of their opponent per game than liverpool. But only three teams (Atletico, ManCity and Dortmund) were able to concede less shots on their own goal than Liverpool. I think first you need a solid defensive before you can talk about mentality, attacking power, tactics and luck. Especially in cup games, reducing the risk of a goal against you is crucial, because you have less options (minutes) to correct mistakes.

Quite depressing really, 6 bloody times. As far as 3 finals lost I only remember 2007 and 2018, what’s the third ?
