Is there much to be gained by managing Derby for another couple of seasons? He'll just be good at managing a team like Derby, it won't really help him manage a team like Chelsea.
I am not against him moving to a bigger club but chelsea is not the one for him. Now I may be wrong and he could surprise us but Roman would want instant success so doubt they will be patient with him.

A Mourinho led Toon Army once they get bought out?
Gonna have to do alot of seriously good business if they're going to do it this coming season, but they'd be the ones I'd like to see back near the top out of them all.

My money would be on Leicester if they keep their squad together, Rodgers will do wonders there.

I don't think there would be another top 4 team willing to employ him though, not any time soon anyway. It's one of those situations where if you're him, you can't really turn it down, even if it's going to be a disaster.

I think with the transfer ban and if they were prepared to write off top 4 next season they could debut some very interesting players from their academy instead of sending them back out on loan. Lampard of all people will have the fans onside for one dodgy season and Roman should in theory be a little more patient with him. Could all look very shrewd in a few years if 2 or 3 players really step up.

I've been thinking for a long time that ex Midfielders make the best managers or deeper ex defenders. This is because they have to spend much more of their time thinking tactically than strikers ever have to do.

I believe Lampard will do well for Chelsea & Butt or Carrick will be the manager that one day take over at United and does well here.

I've always like Lampard and think he'll be a good manager.

This Chelsea gig won't be easy though, and may have come too soon for him.

So Sky Sports is reporting that Frank Lampard, Chelsea's all time top goal scorer, club legend and current Derby County manger, could be approached to take over at the Bridge in the event that Mauricio Sarri departs for Juventus.

You've got to love the romance of it; but what about the wisdom?

Lampard has absolutely zero elite club management experience. Yes with his Premier League, FA Cup, Champion's League and other honours, he will undoubtedly be respected in the dressing room, but will he have the tactical smarts to take on Pep, Klopp and Pochettino on the field? Add to that the fact that he will be without Eden Hazard and possibly operating under a transfer ban, is he destined to fail?

Strange as it may sound, coming from a United fan, but is it wise for an elite club to offer a management position to someone who is totally untried and untested at that level or doesn't it matter?

Thoughts please?

Clubs do that with players too when it suits them. I don't understand, is the managers job something special in football?
Not totally different but united are or used to be associated with long term manager for growth and stability, clubs like Chelsea never have been since roman rolled in

Watch it somehow work wonders for them while we languish in and around 9th next season.
You just know it.

Chelsea have a strange cycle, where a manager comes in, instantly turns things around, it turns to crap very quickly, then repeat.
Even Sarri still ended with a cup in his first season!!

You mean twice in their history when they hired two of the best managers of all time. Ferguson & Busby lasted so long because they were genuinely special managers. It's massively disrespectful to attribute their success to 'time' such that any fool given enough of it would eventually be successful.

I think it happens everywhere tbh. Managers have a short shelf-life - it's why Pep himself moves on after a while.

It's also worth noting they've made some shockingly bad appointments (Scholari, Di Matteo permanent contract) but have just acted quickly to fix them, that makes their turnovers appear a bit harsh but were perfectly reasonable decisions.

I'd argue the only sacking they got wrong in the last 10 odd years was Ancelotti. The rest were all the correct decisions.

That twice in our history lasted over half a century, don’t get your point that time didn’t attribute to us being successful during both periods?

Teams are running out of managers to try that are available so they're looking for their Barca Pep situation.

They will always be interested in him, he should make them wait in my opinion and do a few more years gaining experience before going into the deep end so soon

Lampard actually comes across as intelligent and someone you’d want to listen to. Contrast that with Giggs or Scholes who show the charisma of a wet sock whenever they’ve been on TV, bless ‘em.

Chelsea treat managers like a cheap hooker anyway, use abuse and forget. He would be better off staying out of that for his own career albeit the compo package will buy a nice house or 5.
I don’t know about you, but I treat my cheap hookers with love and respect. And certainly keep them more than a few times.

Might well be my last post ever on here after my 20000 or so previously on here under fergiesbarmyarmy but Carolina red deemed my thread on Real Madrid winners of 3 European cups in the last 5 years spending £344 million already this summer on 5 players against Man Utd spending £15 million on one player from Swansea not worthy of discussion on a man united forum.

So thanks for making me laugh pal and FA out!

Maybe :D

The need for experience is hugely overrated! I mentioned this in another thread. Rudd Gullit had zero experience as a manager when he became player manager at Chelsea. In his first year he won the FA Cup, which was Chelsea's first trophy in 25 years and 6th in the league. In his second Chelsea were 2nd in the league and into 2 Cup QF's, before he got sacked during talks about a new contract. Gullit was the right man at the right time for Chelsea. Lampard might or might not be riight for Chelsea and only time will tell. Same for Ole.

He does say in the OP "strange as it sounds, coming from a United fan" which is presumably acknowledging us appointing Ole.

One has to start somewhere.

And let's stop acting like there is an established blueprint to being a successful manager. You don't always have to work your way up from League 2, against improbable odds, to be qualified for top jobs.
Exactly. Also Lampard is a success then people will rewrite history saying how he was always destined to become a top manager, Chelsea had a clear plan and thought out of box to appoint him.
If he is a failure then people will go on and on about how he lacked experience, Chelsea tried to save money, great player doesn't mean great manager and all that shit.

I think it makes sense - Chelsea not able to make any signings and will likely not be great next year without Hazard - Lampard would come in with the full love of the fans and will get a lot of time through goodwill - any other manager will go on knowing they likely get sacked in a year.

Sport/Bild football editor claims that they are also looking at Rangnick, though weirdly enough he doesn't specify for which role.

I think I read it on wikipedia that his IQ was 145 or something around that.

He does seem very intelligent. Could spell trouble that. What if He invents something during his Chelsea managerial career? a potion to cure Roman? a new non toxic material to replace plastic? cloning Drogba? the list is endless when you're a genius

Lampard, unlike John Terry, always seemed like a classy and intelligent guy to me. I might be completely wrong about this of course. I'd be interested in seeing how he'd do.

His IQ rating is 150 which puts him in top 0.5% people who are the most intelligent in the world. Albert Einstein had an IQ of 160.

IQ doesn't count for everything and his ability to make good decisions under pressure will be what defines his progress.

I would love Frank back at Stamford Bridge but not sure if the timing is great. For the last 3 mornings I've heard pundits saying he should take the position if it is offered because the chance may not arise again. After all the managers job at Chelsea doesn't come up very often.

There's a lot of nonsense and press talk about Sarri, Allegri and Lampard at the moment and much of it should be ignored.

Take a brave man to go into Chelsea this summer if their transfer ban isn't overturned by COA.

Not sure if serious. We've had 15 different managers in the past 15 years (including caretakers).

Can't see Lampard coming in, too inexperienced and situation is not easy for a rookie.

We've got transfer ban and Hazard out.

I think Rafa is coming in... Perfect manager to grind results out, get the best out of Kante. Plus he's free / out of contract.

May not be popular with a lot of fans but I'm well on favour.

He could be a good choice, only the owners and fans will need to be patient with him. Think this could be a good time to bring him in, with the transfer ban and all the pressure will be less, and could give him time to work with some of that talent that is in their academy.

Lampard could well be a great manager in the long run but this one has come along too early I think. He's a smart guy, but sometimes the heart clouds judgement. He might find the job too hard to resist if offered. Given their transfer ban and the fact they've just lost the biggest talent in the league I really can't see them competing for anything more than 4th place over the next few years.

Roman probably won't accept that, even though no manager in earth could get them to City/Liverpool level without signings. He'll be out the door and his reputation damaged.

I mean who else would Chelsea realistically get?, squad is ageing, lost their best player, can't sign anyone till next summer. Not that they will attract many managers.
