This club is a complete mess, Jones, Rojo, Smalling, Young and now Mata have all got new deals.... So much for Ole and his we will be ruthless comments

I know most here won't agree, but I really don't believe renewing Juan Mata's contract is indicative of any negative direction the club is headed in. He's an excellent professional, with wonderful technique, who is happy to stay and help create a positive culture within the club as we move forward. Gomez will get game time, and there are few better mentors. Mata offers something our other players don't, and is still capable of having an impact, particularly from the bench. Yes many of us would prefer a shiny new toy, but I think there are some big arrivals and departures to come this summer.

We really need two teams going into this season, because we won't be able to let off the gas in the league, but we have very little chance of actually winning it. We could win the Europa League though, but to do so we need a strong squad with a blend of legs and experience.

Team 1:

De Gea, Wan-Bissaka, Lindelof, Diop, Shaw, Ndombele, McTominay, Pogba, Lingard, Rashford, Martial

Team 2:

Romero, Dalot, Bailly, Smalling, Young, Matic, Fred, Mata, James, Sanchez, Greenwood
This just reinforces how badly we need to make signings. I can accept the defence, but McTominay should be a squad player or out on loan. Pogbas not interested. And I don't trust any 1 of that front 3 to perform consistently over a season.

We need about 10 players in, it's that bad.

Welcome to reality. If you have a squad full of dross you have to prioritise which dross you immediately replace and which dross you pragmatically keep.

There's no question that we'd ideally replace Mata but ideally we wouldn't also have the guts of a dozen other players we need to replace too.
This is it in a nutshell.
It's going to be a real slow-burner in getting our squad up together.Possibly 3-4 transfer windows.

Makes sense to keep him. He’s not the worst player in the squad and as others have said, is a model professional. Bad attitudes and unprofessional behaviour are the more pressing issues in our squad.

I'm pretty sure the only reason we're keeping such players is because the Glazers don't want to spend money replacing them.

Mata is much less of an issue than players like Jones and Rojo though.

Anyone else worry that we'll sell Pogba, change to a 4-2-3-1 and use Mata as the #10 as Pogbas replacement.

Zero faith in Ed or Ole in the transfer department.

Nah, lack of quality is our biggest issue by far. Keeping the likes of Mata doesn't help us at all

Possibly an unpopular opinion, but I still like Mata.
I can see why people want rid of him, but if he does sign a new deal I hope he can be useful for us.
He'd be one of the last players that go for me anyway.

Right so rereading this thread title it is obvious now.

Mata was offered a one year deal, a two year deal and a three year deal and was just deciding between them.

Well played Ed.

Not every signing needs to blow your nips off to be worthwhile.

The level of disrespect Mata gets on here saddens me.
What do you mean? You're making out that the opposition to Mata being given a three year contract is evidence of United fans demands for every player being too high. The reality is that United fans do want to see some 'worthwhile' reason for either signing or keeping a player and in the case of Mata it's hard to think of anything that would adequately fulfill this criteria.

Also it's all very well to say that you're saddened by the lack of respect but remember the Mata at United was never the same or as good as the Mata at Chelsea. It would be disingenuous to say otherwise and I think on both counts you know this to be true.

I would rather clear out these half-arsed superstars with big names and big wages, who have never consistently delivered in all honesty.

People have been afraid to say it for a long time but frankly speaking Mata is shite. He's so far away from being at the required level.

I'll take Deulefeo, Roberto Pereyra, David Brooks, Fraser, Sigurdsson, Madisson, Lanzini, F. Anderson all ahead of Juan Mata and most of those aren't even good enough for us.

Nothing to do with respect, he’s just not good enough anymore. I’d rather see Gomes or Greenwood get his minutes.

...the Spain midfielder has agreed a deal longer than the one-year extension that was initially on offer...

It will be a good deal if

He’s on less money
Prepared to be squad player at best

Knowing Ed it will be a weekly wage of £300k and promised first team player

I'd be fine with a 1+1 year deal but giving him 3 years would just be dumb.

IF we will use him as no10 then i am happy because of this. If not, then it is bad deal for us

There is no upside to this. Mata is not good enough and doesn't fit the high-energy style we supposedly want to play

Worst thing is whilst we have fodder like Mata in the squad it masks the size of the rebuilding job needed

Everybody like Juan, it is that people are worried the club will treat this like a signing, so not strengthening the team where needed. If some rent-a-gob from the club comes out with 'It's like a new signing' I will punch somebody.

Club officially announce it after a new signing? To avoid a barrage of attacks?

PR 101 I'd guess.

You've got a long season coming up, potentially 60+ games. Mata will be a help.
Duffer first reasonable post in this thread for a long time.
Getting him signed on for three years give them time to work on other areas and he will get a lot of games where he could really help out.
He is still a good player, but he needs replacing but other areas must be priority.
A clearout will need to add some players as others go.

Mata can come useful if utilised in the last 15-20 mins of the game when.the team is chasing a goal.
He s slow as feck but he has the ability to create a chance out of nothing

I suppose it depends on the system Ole employs and also who leaves/comes in. I don't think he's getting an extension just because he writes a nice blog.

Perhaps but a 3 year deal for someone in that role? Not for me sorry.
