Yesterday United's young talented goalkeeper Joel Pereira turned 23. He's a fringe player in the squad and unlikely to ever make much of an impact. He's only been involved in the first team on three occasions and only one of those was a start in a Premier League match. A meaningless end of season game against Crystal Palace. To celebrate the player's birthday, United's twitter posted a fairly innocuous birthday message. And then it began.

"Announce Wan-Bissaka" said the first reply. The next was a picture of the Crystal Palace right back in a United shirt. Posts flooded in saying that the club was 'embarrassing' for not announcing the new Manchester United player. Conspiracies floated around that United would be announcing the signing a day late to coincide with an anti-Glazer protest that is apparently planned. Details of this event seem sparce, but seem to involve tweeting a lot by fans who live in foreign countries. Apparently United would be so upset by a few thousand tweets that they would be willing to change the details of a £50 million pound signing.

This recent idea that United are 'embarrassing' seems to have seeped into everyone's consciousness. United are trying to get new scouts. 'Embarrassing'. United sign a few hungry young players from the Premier League. Embarrassing. United are linked with big money moves for Bale or such like players. Embarrassing. But it becomes painfully obvious reading this forum, reading social media or comment sections on websites, that is the behaviour of the fanbase that is increasingly embarrassing.

United currently spend the most on wages in the Premier League. The club has spent 300 million on transfers in the last three summer windows and recouped about 50 million of that. They are the only big club to have spent money in the Premier League so far. They are the biggest spenders in the league so far this window. But that isn't enough for some United fans. They inundate message boards across the internet asking for more investment, more transfer activity and specifically signing players that they have identified on Football Manager.

The fact is United are currently operating in the right way. We have signed a talented young player from lower leagues. Response to this signing has been mixed, almost as if signing players from Championship clubs is beneath us. Nevermind the small outlay or the potential of the young player, he's already written off by some. We have followed this up by clearly improving a weak area in our squad with a defender who was statistically the best right back in the league last year. We have got him for a reasonable fee with plenty of time left. Still some complain that he isn't announced, like that matters in any way shape or form.

United fans complain about the lack of 'deadwood' moving on, but we have taken steps to sort this with Valencia, Fellaini and Wilson leaving the club. Players such as Darmian and Rojo are expected to join them shortly afterwards. These deals take time, but fans are impatient, desperately trying to get the next hit of dopamine from a transfer rumour posted by a Reddit ITK.

It is not acceptable at this stage to be so miserable about United's upcoming chances. As a fanbase we need to get behind the players. A few years ago we laughed as Klopp had his players celebrate after a 2-2 draw with West Brom. But Liverpool fans bought into what was happening and despite a relatively low spend since then, Klopp has been immensely successful.

United have a new season starting soon. We are spending money, improving the squad and working towards getting back to our perch. It might not work, but please stop being so overly dramatic, especially before a ball is even kicked. Let's get behind our young legendary manager and our new team and see if we can kick on.

I agree. Negativity breeds negativity. This is unfortunately a slippery slope we are on. This is the way of the world. The time for rational, intellectual debate is gone. The time to trust in people is gone. But this is largely to do with Media. They write what we want to read, they feed on our insecurities and our emotions. It isn't just in football, its all over. Even in my profession. The shit I read about aviation that the general public lap up as gospel is horrific. The uninformed being lead by the uninformed.

I will give Ole the benefit of the doubt till he is let go. I am no expert and neither are 100% of the populous of this forum.

It is easy to give into your bias as well. EVERY time a rival team is linked with a player it is taken as 100% gospel and it further fuels the ire that some of these fans feel. Instead of waiting to see what happens we have a fanbase who is outraged over things that will never come true.

It's certainly not this club's biggest problem but it is one. Although the club itself is responsible for most of it. The way it was run the last decade was a joke.

The fans base has nothing to do with our problem. Our fan base has more patience than other giant clubs fan base. Now imagine if Real Madrid or Barcelona went on such a bad run in 6 years. If anything, I think our fans are too soft on the club, the manager and the players.

This is a social problem, it’s got nothing in particular to do with football. People will get entitled about literally anything.

Sigh......

Completely agree, and it’s mostly the reason I don’t post much - I’d just spend the time banging my head against a brick wall. Liberal use of the ignore button and not popping into the more emo threads is the way to go!

Great post. agree 100%, patience is required. It's not the 1st time United were in a hole and we got out of it.

That bold part is absolute bonkers. We are being run horrendously bad and you think the fans are the problem? If anything fans have been too patient with management that is prioritizing marketing over footballing matters.

People haven't turned like this overnight. I think most fans are just fed up after 5 years of dross. All sorts of managers have signed all sorts of players since SAF retired, and it seems nothing changes.

Support doesn't disappear - I think the activity in the media and places like this forum speak for themselves - just because people moan doesn't mean they don't care. A few moaners online isn't the reason Ole had such a shite end of the season.

David Moyes,
LVG,
Jose Mourinho.

Those are the three managers we hired since Ferguson. One has now retired from football. One hasn't got a high profile job apart from United. One is now seen as toxic. We hired three wrong managers and supported them. The way the club has run means we generate a huge income and will rebound as soon as we give a good manager the same backing as the other three.

I would say the biggest problem is fans who plod to the ground like zombies and clap like seals to try and prove their 'top red' style loyalty to the club, whilst the entire place is ravaged by the parasites in charge

I don't think some people understand. It's not about us being crap, the club is slowly being killed and by attending games, buying merchandise, asking people not to criticise the owners, you're tacitly supporting what the Glazers are doing.

Ah the bliss of us not actually playing football at the moment, and allowing yourself to dream that once again we about to turn a corner.

Clearly the amount we have spent on players recently isn't the issue, nor is the wages we spend, so something else is clearly very wrong, yet here we are another summer with the same people making the decisions, just this time we have an even more questionable manager expected to make it work, and you wonder why people are cynical?

Until Ed is removed from the job he has no right to be doing, and we get the right people, making the right decisions for the club, then this will just continue.

I get your points, but the problem in my opinion is not that we are spoilt, it is trust. We don't trust the owners/Ed to make the right decisions, hence every move by the club is viewed with suspicion.
You can't blame us, since Sir retired, the club have barely placed a foot right. The overpaying for Fellaini, the way LGV sack was handled, renewing Jose contract only not to back him, but sack him later etc.

I remember when Sir was around, he made so many decisions that didn't go down well with the fans, but the fans trusted his judgement because of his antecedents of making sound decisions most of the time.

You made mention of our wage bills, and monies spent on transfers.Yet we are underwhelming on the pitch. It shows that we are not efficient. We buy players that are either past it, or not up to it ,pay ridiculous wages to underachieving players,by a CEO that is not a football man.

There's no guarantee that we are operating the right way now, we will know at the end of the season,James us still raw,he can come good or not, nobody also knows if Ole can develop young players. Time will tell.

Deadwoods are very much around, instead of moving them on, we are rewarding them with new contracts, compare it with city who have moved on Kompany, and will move on Silva at the end of the season. Jones, Youngy,Smalling and Mata signed extensions.

From day one, every body could see improvement with Klopp and knew that they will improve with the right players and time. With us there is no improvement, most of us will wait if we see improvement in our play.

Excellent.

Agreed. We want rebuilt and giving youth a chance is only a punchline. This sort of moves from the op is exactly what people has been harping about last year and when we finally do it it's all critized.

Utter rubbish. Our fan base is too apathetic actually just being content having Ole as manager despite showing no signs of progress or a style of football & trusting him with our summer transfers.

How do you think our club has prioritised marketing over football matters?
Really? Have you missed how Woodward wanked over clicks when we signed Alexis? Or when he blubbered shit about how our performances don't affect how much money we can generate? It clearly speaks volumes about our downfall in the last 6 years.

So you are in the board room with inside knowledge of how the club is prioritizing marketing over football? This is prime example of people just chatting shite and pretending it's factual
Woodward replied: "Playing performance doesn't really have a meaningful impact on what we can do on the commercial side of the business."
I guess you were in a fecking coma and missed the string of appalling decision made by that same board and Woodward in the last 6 years.

I agree with much in the OP. I don’t think it’s true for everybody or even most of the fans though, but certainly about the most vocal ones on social media and chat forums (like this).

I also believe it is true and in evidence that the football part of the club has not been well run for a considerable time. Not ‘a joke’ or ‘embarassing’, but consistently not well run. This is on the owners, the board and the CEO. I am for the Glazer’s out message on those grounds. Not because they don’t let the club earn it’s money well and spend them, but because they have let the club run from 2009 to 2019 with a badly run sports department making inconsistent sports decision on a constant basis.

Still, much of what happens looks like fans feeling it is their right to have a football team that wins most tournaments in exuberant style, and when that is far of, everything is wrong, and it’s madly wrong, and it’s legit to complain about it at every occasion.

It’s like Toure and his birthday cake.

I guess you were in a fecking coma and missed the string of appalling decision made by that same board and Woodward in the last 6 years.
How does Ed Woodwood talking about social engagement show that they are prioritising marketing over football matters? At the time Jose Mourinho clearly wanted Alexis Sanchez, so Woodwood signed him. If he then didn't track social engagement, he would be awful at his job.

Sanchez being awful is a Mourinho mistake. That's why he has gone.

Our biggest issue is not having an overall long-term plan. Liverpool have been playing the same with since they hired Brendan Rodgers and thus recruiting the same profile of players.
Our second biggest issue is God awful recruitment.
Our third biggest issue is coaching staff not being able to improve any player.

I would say in terms of fanbase, opposite is the problem. The match going fanbase will cheer any manager to the championship and never turn on them. If the match going fans get the white hankies out let's see how long these underperforming managers, board members and players last.

The part about negativity is certainly true. Too much moaning about everything. It was obvious that all our problems were never going to be resolved in one window, and there is still time for deals to get done. At least wait till the transfer window shuts before looking at what we got and then passing judgement. The media write a ton of shit to get clicks, and people just lap it up as gospel. People need to be patient, it is not like other clubs have finished doing their business and we are the only ones left behind.

This.

The day your fanbase stops being "spoiled" and "entitled", is the day you're no longer a big club with a big club mentality. Clubs like Real Madrid, FC Hollywood, the shit hits the fan when the results are not there, and this is how it is supposed to be. If people working for United can't stand the heat, they should go to Spurs or Everton.

Do you need a quote and verified video from Woodward where he says "I prioritize marketing over footballing matters, and I don't really give a feck about the club winning titles as long as I can take care of the Glazers milking the club for money" so you actually open your eyes and see what is happening? Because there isn't one, yet.

It's exactly the same with every other club on Twitter. There is no moderation so nothing will change even if United suddenly would become successful again.
It should be different in places like this, unfortunately, it isn't.
