Apparently Today is the last day of Moyes’s 6 year contract.
It reminded me of simpler days, when everything seemed just as simple of a fix as just sacking Dave Moyes.

Will never forget:

  • That equalizing goal against Fulham at home in the 93’ minute.
  • Fellaini
  • The tres hombres pretending to be agents, negotiating the transfer of Ander Herrera to Manchester United, and failing.
  • Almost buying Toni Kroos
  • Mata’s helicopter and how everybody was euphoric over finally having a Spanish midfielder.
  • Januzaj emerging as a saviour against Sunderland, later on again vs Swansea at home and him starting as a false 9 against Chelsea a week after that, in some really bizarre formation.
  • Olympiacos away, by far the worst match I’ve ever seen us play.
  • How he replaced SAF’s staff with a bunch of weird people from Everton.
  • How everton finished above us in the very same season.
  • When he showed Rio Ferdinand and Vidic videos of Phil Jagielka.
  • Getting trounced by Pool and City at home, never felt so defeated watching football.
  • That Evra screamer vs Bayern

Breaking the prem record for the highest amount of crosses in one game - 81. Only 18 met one of our players......

Wasnt there the story of him not realising how popular man utd was, taking the players on a run along the beach during pre season which got abandoned pretty quick because they were swamped by fans?

For us on the outside it was obvious pretty quick he was out of he depth, you can only imagine what it must have like for the players.

That was the first sign he was letting the fans(and I use the term loosely)get to him, after the previous match twitter was flooded with Wombleheads tweeting "how the fecking hell are we gonna score if we can't get a fecking cross in"

It’s still a nice thought to know his tenure is over

A lot of fans myself included were really trying to abide by Fergie’s stand by your new manager speech but it just kept getting worse and worse. That Fulham game :houllier:

Also, and this is more Woodwoods fault, but starting the transfer window with a joint bid for Baines and fellani that was ridiculously insulting to Everton was cringe.

Knew from day 1 it was a mistake. He just never seemed like a elite level manager.

Mental how he managed to get a side that had walked the league the previous season to finish 7th.

What was that midfield again ?

Giggs - Cleverly - Carrick - Nani

And he thought we needed only Fellaini :houllier:

It was a difficult day when he was appointed Manager given I had argued for months that he was a bad choice. Those were difficult times.

I don't overly blame Dave though, was always going to be a poisoned chalice of a move for whichever Manager took over. I still think the only choice was Mourinho back then, he was the only Manager who had the ego to think he could do better than Sir Alex.

Alas, we had Moyes and LvG before Jose took over and by that time his spark had gone.

It was so strange going from having full confidence in the club and especially the manager to what came since. I figured United must know what they're doing. They'll have done an insane amount of research, talked about tactics, done some state of the art of analysis.
I've since realised United is ran no better than any other big company. There's nothing special going on behind the scenes.

Don’t forget the five seconds or so after Evra scored against Bayern before they equalized. That was probably the most euphoric moment of his entire tenure.

I think a lot of United fans are still struggling to come to terms with this. The fact that we never had to worry about our manager or what he was doing, knowing without thinking that what he’s doing is correct and for the best. I really do think that’s a big part of why as a fan base we place such blind, unwavering faith in every single manager that’s come since.

The day he got sacked is one of those where I remember exactly where I was and what I was doing. The sun was shining, great day. Sadly it was just the start.

I can understand if some supporters are disappointed with Moyes' attitude, the fact that he left the club before, or that he wants to be more like city, however, some people are taking this into extreme.

He’s been our best Scottish manager in the year he’s been here post Fergie I really don’t think you can argue against it, some were more consistent perhaps, but when he’s on, he’s on a different level to any other manager we have.

Now, thinking about Schweinsteiger’s time here, and the respect he got from the OT crowd and fans overall, is something I’m truly struggling with.
The guy was the bigget mercenary I’ve ever seen play for this club, he was absolutely shite and past it, pocketing crazy wage every week to either be in the physio’s room or back in Germany.

The guy couldn’t give less of a feck about this club, yet people respected him and no one called him a “scumbag”.
Moyes who got Everton above us in 2014, is despised by some fans.

Help me to understand this, because I’m really stuck.

I'd argue that what has gone on behind he scenes at Utd is actually unique - just in how anomalously run Utd is compared to any other club of it's size...

Fast forward six years from then and we have an attack of

JLINGZ/Mata - Rashy/Greenwood - Martial/James

And our manager seems to be interested signing Longstaff, Slab-head, 30 years young Ben Yader, and Bruno. According to rumors

Not going to lie, I was fully against the idea of him coming here, I couldn’t believe there even was such an idea.
I thought we should be going for one the best managers in the world, someone with the pedigree to take on such a job, how people who know a lot more about football than I do, ever though that Dave Moyes is that man, is beyond me.

However, even in my most pessimist visions, never ever I thought we would be out of the top four, let alone seventh.
In hindsight, we couldn’t have done worse even if we tried.
Anyone who would have came here and kept Ferguson’s staff would’ve done better than Moyes even on that basis alone.

Oh well, here’s some highlights from his last match in charge, away to Everton:

Losing at home to Everton and then Newcastle pretty early was the first sign as manager (gave him benefit after the Liverpool and city loss early)

However keeping an injured / half fit rvp on and being asked why and saying something like "could you imagine the reaction if I took him off"

It just got worse and worse with nearly every unwanted record being broken.

Urgh, that defending for the goals. I remember after that match there were arguments whether Jones and Smalling were really cut out to be our first choice pair for the future...and SIX damn years later we STILL have the same arguments about them. To be fair Jones slipped for the opener but he didn't need to stick his arm out.

I gave up after that Fulham game.
Amazingly, some still wanted to defend Moyes after that horrible show

Yup, appointing Moyes was very odd but still I don't know who made a bigger mess, him or LVG, and by the time Mourinho got the job the team had regressed a lot. At the time I also thought Mourinho would had been the best option to follow Sir Alex Ferguson and rebuild the team when they were still dominant, but if appoiting Moyes was super weird the most absurd thing to me was the commitment in giving him such a lengthy contract just like that. :houllier:

I've seen that game. More like the players are trying to spite him. Everything is a cross, even a harmless 15 yard pass is crossed

[Good stuff snipped...]
  • Mata’s helicopter and how everybody was euphoric over finally having a Spanish midfielder. I wasn’t. Moyes managed to bring the unorthodox but very effective Fellaini with him and proceed to turn him into a complete stiff; it seemed obvious he’d be equally clueless with Mata.
  • Olympiacos away, by far the worst match I’ve ever seen us play. I also can’t recall a match so completely won by a single player as RvP in the return leg.
  • How he replaced SAF’s staff with a bunch of weird people from Everton. At the time he did it I actually felt quite relieved as it seemed he was going to be his own man and not just pretend to be SAF. How wrong I was!
  • When he showed Rio Ferdinand and Vidic videos of Phil Jagielka. Think this may have been apocryphal. Rio has every right to hate him though; he was still a top defender the previous year, but SAF had been using him sparingly. Moyes finished him off by overplaying him.
  • Getting trounced by Pool and City at home, never felt so defeated watching football. Indeed. I’d never known that level of helplessness, even in the season we were relegated.
The only time I didn’t feel completely pessimistic was during a run of 6 or so consecutive wins (in all competitions) before Christmas. The football was by no means great, but we didn’t look completely clueless and Welbeck led the line effectively in Rooney’s absence. It all came crashing down with an awful home defeat to a crap Spurs on New Year’s Day followed by humiliating exits in both cups. After that the end couldn’t come soon enough.

Always remember the bookies having us finishing outside the top 4 at the start of the season and RVP after winning the opening game 4-0 being interviewed expressing his surprise and couldn't understand it after winning the league so convincingly. He and some fans would come to learn what was in-store.

Remember when Paddy Evra scored that belter in Munich and for 20 seconds or so David Moyes was Pep's kryptonite and we were the greatest team on the planet again.. Good times.
