The only PES game I enjoyed was the one with Adriano on the front cover. Think it was the 2006 game. I mastered that game. None of my friends could beat me. They don’t make them like they used to!
PES 6 gameplay has never been surpassed imo. Still playing it occasionally, with patched up 2019 teams, kits and all.

In terms of gameplay I prefer some things about both games. I prefer PES on the whole because you can score far more interesting and unique goals than on FIFA and the defending isn't a total shitshow. PES has better AI too which is important to me. Running with the ball and certain kinds of shots feel better on Fifa.

Fifa's career mode could actually be good, I think the scouting/Youth Academy feature is close to being really cool if they just made some simple and easy tweaks. EA are extremely lazy and won't do it, infuriatingly.

Even in the video you can see the floating player animations which are outdated, and Rashford taking the ball with his left foot and finishing with a dink with the outside of his left foot. McTominay scoring from 35 yards placing the ball in the top corner. Shows how realistic PES is.

I guess if graphics and sponsorship are important to you then PES has that edge.

This sort of thing happens on Fifa all the time too. Lost count the amount of times on my Levante career where some random Spanish player would take an awkward, spastic-like swipe at the ball and it goes flying into the top corner. And players regularly shoot with their weak side for no good reason

So no Old Trafford in fifa 20, yay.
This is not necessarily true. Liverpool was officially licensed in PES 19 and yet Anfield was still in FIFA 19. It's possible both games still get the goods, but it is impossible to say with any certainty how that will shake out without reading the fine print of the contract.

No that really is their marketing video
I bought every single FIFA from 12 to 18 but saying PES is unrealistic while FIFA is a definition of arcady unrealistic crap is rich. Both games has floaty animations and will always do. In both games you can score absolutely worldies with any player. But FIFA has nothing to do with realism, just look at the pace of the game, especially in FUT. When majority of FIFA youtubers spend like 90% of the time opening packs instead of actually playing the game you know something is really wrong with it.

FIFA still gets the stadium as it drops inside the FIFA licencing.

I dont play FUT and dont consider it when comparing the games. I'm just looking at a normal match vs another normal match. The pace of the game in the video in the op is a slow pace to me compared to a premier league game.

For me PES has always been about fun rather than realism. Even when it was the better game from PES/PES 2 until the "new generation" of FIFA games a bunch of years ago. I remember doing Brazilian flicks with Emile Heskey and doing instant 1 touch passing before receiving the ball with any team. Thats not realistic, but its going to be fun for people to be able to do whatever they want to do with any team or player. FIFA needed a big makeover and it got it with the newer generation FIFA where they redid everything. PES still needs that, other than the graphics it still looks like a previous generation of football game.

Well in Woody.

You might need to get a bigger syphoning tool for the extra revenue flow into the Glazers pockets

Early PES gameplay shat all over early FIFA. It wasn’t even close.

They’ve ended up very samey since FIFA got their shit together. Both pretty damn good to play for ages now. I’ve mainly been playing FIFA because of the limited licensing with PES. This might tempt me back.

Maybe in the PS2 era! You can't do shit like that now on PES.

Certain skill moves are only attributed to the right player and if a player is shit at control oh it shows.

Great, that's what I figured. I know FIFA has a partnership with the EPL, so it was unlikely we were going to get short shrift in terms of face scans or stadium renderings, but I didn't want to say for sure that was the case.

Well that’s a relief.

What’s the difference between what we are doing here and what Barcelona did?
I am not 100% sure to be honest, they get to licence 2 PL teams each time whereas the Barca thing is a full partnership I believe... Must be something to do with La Liga.

PES Ambassador Scott McTominey  wot?

Gameplay FIFA, graphics PES; that's always been the case imo..
This is all sorts of wrong. Go and sit in the corner.

PES fell off massively during the PS3-era, when FIFA did genuinely overtake it for quite a while, but in pretty much every other era* (shout out to ISS 98 on PS1 with Paul Ince on the cover!) PES has been the better actual game of football.

*(it’s probably half and half in this Gen tbf, as it started shakily, but it’s been the better game again for at least the last 3 years.)

I'm not going to any corner thanks, I like FIFA more, my own preference..

Yesssss.

Also, PES is the superior game, gameplay wise. Presentation is still shit though.

It has been surpassed long ago.

This is great news. Love United being a partner club in Pes as opposed to Livepool and Barcelona alone.

People saying Fifa is a realistic football game...

I've not actually played PES, but jesus, I'd not want to if we class Fifa as realistic and superior

I was always a fan of Actua Soccer 2 and it’s blocky characters, barmy physics and ridiculous camera angle. You could score some long range bangers in that to the dulcet tones of Barry Davies.

It's always been the other way around I thought, the rights and graphics just slowly killed pes over the years.
PES probably has better graphics. They flipped when Fifa did a complete overhaul, it then had better / more realistic and fun animations than PES, which PES had previously when Fifa was the same game but with the licensed teams every year.

I was actually working at EA Games in 2005 just doing game testing for online / network games like Battlefield. We did some bug testing on Fifa 2005, not the next generation Fifa game but one of the old ones. And half the team prefered PES and played it during our lunch break against each other, while the others prefered Fifa. I was one of the ones bringing PES in. And I was one of several people who sent a mail with suggestions about areas where PES is much better than Fifa at the time.

The thing is, not long later I saw an early version of the next generation Fifa. It had some textures missing, including on Sir Alex Ferguson who was shouting the team on from the touchline. I got to play that version of the game a little bit but it wasnt one of my responsibilities. Just something to try on the side. And right from that version you could see a lot more care and passion had gone into making more realistic animations so that players really did look like they were doing the things you see in the grounds.

The old Fifa didnt have that. When you would shoot for example suddenly the ball would move from wherever it was, to the players foot and then the shot would come from there instead of using more realistic physics where the ball is kicked from the position its at when you let go of the shot. Old, outdated things like that which Fifa hadnt bothered to upgrade because it was always the most popular football game so they didnt need to. But now Pro Evo was a better game and becoming popular.

So the new version addressed things like that. That first version of the new generation Fifa games I didnt buy, I stayed with Pro Evo. For me the first one was a bit too slow and plodding. But after that I gave the next generation Fifa a chance and it was so much better than the Pro Evo games, at what the Pro Evo games had been better than Fifa at previously.

It used to be Fifa that cared most about graphics and licenses, until Pro Evo came around. Now its Pro Evo thats about the graphics and these individual licenses while the gameplay still needs a revamp to catch up to the new generation.

Back to sending that list of things that Pro Evo was doing much better than Fifa. EA had already made the next generation game and addressed a bunch of things that were in my list. So while it would be a cool story to suggest that anything I noted was changed because of it, I dont think anything was. Because before they could possibly have implimented it, even if for some reason they saw my notes and decided to change things... The new generation Fifa was already there for me to play, albeit in an early stage.

Maybe my notes and other people's notes were reflected on in the next versions of the game? I guess its possible but chances are a bunch of other people suggested the same things I did. All I know is they got it right after putting the right amount of resources behind revamping the game.

Still waiting for Pro Evo to do likewise.

Have been FIFA since about 2007, but switched over to PES this year as it was going on PS network cheap, and its much much better gameplay than FIFA. The no kits & logos thing is a bit shit, but you can just download them & upload them from USB easily.

The season mode isnt too bad at all, online could be better though. The PES version of Ultimate team (Myclub) doesnt have a tap really on FUT. Hopefully they've improved on this for 2020.

That's an excellent post man, very interesting. I take it EA were much better to work for than now? There reputation has gone down massively over the years. I suppose it comes back to personal taste in the end. I've properly played both since 98 from ps1 and n64 up. First FIFA was 93 on the mega drive I played. I personally preferred the mid 2000's pes games, played it in college too much and won many a competition. Got into the top 100 players online for a brief period in one of the PS3 editions, I personally enjoyed the game mechanics and speed of pro evo overall. Last FIFA game I enjoyed better than Pes was fifa 13. That's not to say Pes has been better, enjoyed only two of them since. Think the quality has dipped massively the last few years. It's hard to explain, the passing and tempo just doesn't feel right in them now. Maybe it depends how you play the game. It feels like they are just throwing slight modifications each annual edition.

There have been some things I never understood how both games didn't address. Commentary! I know it's hard to get an automated ai authentic but should focus more on saying each players name and in game stats, always thought it would be more effective to the in game experience. That and challenging goalkeepers properly in corners, it would add so much more realism to the unpredictably which is football.

I mean it was just an entry level thing for a couple of months so I dont know that it was a full experience of what its like to work there in the nitty gritty for a long period. Every couple of months they hire new people to test the games and try to find issues that should delay the release of the game until its fixed, else the games are released in a shoddy state. So thats all we were doing really, following some instructions to make sure certain things work correctly and dont crash the game, and then just trying other things that might crash the game. And along the way of course we got to play the games a decent amount.

I had no issues with my superiors, they were friendly and supportive. So thats about all I know.

As for commentary, I tend to play all the football games muted
