He's a good player, but I think it's too much money, the clause or even 100m€.
I think he is too suffocated and sometimes tactically sacrificed in the Simeone system.
For that reason I do not know exactly what his real level is, for better or for worse.
A couple of years ago the press talked about contacts with his family setting, and now it has been said that his family discarded City to a journalist and pointed to United, so it can be a realistic signing.
If I were United I would take a look one level below, the under 21(where Atlético would go if they lose Saúl or Rodri).
Marc Roca,Zubeldia,Mikel Merino,Soler.
Agree. Atletico are going to absolutely fleece us for Saul and there are cheaper options available. Soler is a good example. Also, Kondogbia's a seriously good player who would improve us.

For now Soler doesnt get many games in cm. Has been really good offensively for Valencia in europe though

We need someone more creative for the 8 position. We've seen how much emphasis is on Pogba creating when played with Matic and Herrera. Saul instead of Herrera wouldn't make that much of a difference.

Instead of pursuing a box to box combative midfielder, we should be after a playmaker, in my opinion.

Saul is definitely more creative than Herrera tbh. Watched an Atleti game a while ago where he was doing stepovers, flicks, beating his man, basically playing as a winger whipping in crosses! He was their biggest offensive threat that game.

To be fair, with Matic needing replacing too, the future setup could be one with a DLP as the holding midfielder. I'd definitely rather both of our more creative players being closer to the opposition box though.

He most likely is more creative than Herrera. It's not that hard as Herrera offers little creativity, but when I talk about playmakers, I think about players like Rakitic, Kroos, Pjanic - players who control games and open teams up like Scholes used to do.

That was out of the blue and sounded like we're talking about 8-year olds.

Why if I may ask?
You can afford 1 player who doesnt do much defending, but 2 is leaving your defense out to dry. Guardiola might manage it, others nah

Rakitic, Pjanic and Kroos would have no problems defending and could easily play in the 8 position with Pogba slightly further forward.

I just don't see the point in discussing a player who has 7 years left on his contract.

According to Ducker we want Longstaff + 1 more in the middle and Fernandes is the preference but we've been looking at Saul too.

Doesn't make much sense. Longstaff is a DM or DLP and a Matic replacement. Saul is a Herrera replacement, a #8 while Bruno is a #10 or an attacking Pogba replacement. How can it be Saul or Bruno, it doesn't sound very logical. We actually need Saul more than Bruno if Pogba is staying

We can still hijack Ndombele, and Lyon want Bailly. Thomas Partey is another option.

There’s no chance he’d leave Atletico. Especially in our condition.

From what i've heard, Bruno has the engine to play as an 8.

Imagine if we sold Pogba and found ourselves with Saul and Bruno. Mind, it would take actual ambition as a football club to pull it off.

It would be amazing. Would just need a Matic replacement then.

Is this what we're looking at?:
Saul | Fred | Longstaff | Fernandes

Subs:
Pereira | Matic | McT | Mata

I think he'd be fantastic if we managed to get him. I just don't think it's likely, all things considered.

Thats the dream. It would actually improve us as a team. Not sure how much it would take to buy Saul. Didn’t he have a release clause?

Come on people, if you managed to get your muppet on for de Ligt, why not for Saul. No one else is in for him and he's not managed by Raiola. I know it's a long shot, but we can dream.

League:

----Matic
Saul----Fernandes

Europa:

---------Longstaff
McTominay---Fred

With Garner getting minutes from the bench. I'm officially on this train now. Saul!!!!!!!

His release clause is €150m, and I can’t see why he’d want to come to united.

No chance.
It seems his ownership situation is pretty fecked up, and they may be forced into letting him go.

I'm not saying it's going to happen, but it's a bizarre set of circumstances it what has been reported is accurate.

We are looking for Longstaff and a Herrera replacement. If Pogba leaves, we will buy a third midfielder as well.

Saul is my favourite midfielder of the current generation. Tactically astute and follows coaching instructions very well, and plays really well in big matches. Never goes hiding.

Now why would Saul want to come here?

We have been wanting him for ages and he has said positive words about us in the past. Also, the situation at Atletico is messed up, not that we are in much better shape.

Considering the exodus that's happened at A Madrid this is almost certain to be a non starter.

Not even down to the fact that his release clause is 130+ million. Fernandes and Saul occupy completely different roles in the midfield so how does it make sense for Saul to be an alternative that's like saying we're prioritising Ozil but as a backup Schweinstiger is a target.

Either the stupidity lies with our scouting / transfer department or the journalist posting these articles have no element of sense.

He was silly enough to sign that super long contract, now he regrets it. Either his advisers or himself are to blame if they're looking for a wage increase now. They made their own bed, now they have to sleep in it.

Moron. No leverage.

Has there been a new link to him or are we willing this on blindly?

Here's a gossip piece in the Mail, where it says:

"It is believed the Spanish international is tied down at the Wanda Metropolitano until 2026 but he does have a £135m release clause. Under the terms of Niguez' contract, Atletico would only be entitled to £81m of that and would be forced to shell out the extra £54m just to retain him."

Can anyone explain to me what the sentence in italics means? If the release clause is triggered, where does the extra 54m go?

If this could happen, I'd be fine with 135m for Pogba.
