I think it's a good appointment, and it's really cool to see this new generation of managers taking the reins at massive clubs. It's a breath of fresh air tbh.

It is risky because of what is connected to a Sarri appointment. Those coaches have clear visions of their team, training facilities, transfers and so forth. The club commits itself to this vision and backs the manager's philosophy and backs him against resistances when he pushes it through. Change always means risk because you break habits and convenient organizational structures, so you inevitably upset many people who don't want that.

Yes, the appointment of a no name is risky, too, but after all the motive behind such a decision is that you choose the familiar over the unknown. Or do you really believe Lampard or Solskjaer will turn their clubs upside down?

If I were to guess, I'd say Chelsea appointed Sarri because he had a very good reputation but they weren't aware what that signing actually meant. They didn't expect all the inner conflicts and that he wanted so many changes so they decided to let him go. Now that they've made this experience, they want to go back to someone who is far more convenient and will fit in much better with the already existing structures and people, not realizing that they need this change to remain at respectively find back to the top.

Besides that, it's also such a ridiculously clear break in philosophy. There's no continuity or overarching philosophy. When they appointed Conte after Mourinho, it made sense. When they chose Sarri, I thought the, wanted to abandon this style and follow City's role model. Now they appointed Lampard and if his style as a footballer is anything to go by his style of play is as far away from Sarri's as it gets. As I said: no continuity.
You sound like you have seen a pattern here, but in fact you haven’t even seen Lampard as a manager? So if Lampard has had Derby playing a possession based game, related to the styles of Guardiola and Sarri, what will that do to your train of hypothetical reasoning?

Sol Campbell was right. One year at Derby and he gets this job? I don't to see anyone saying there isn't a bias towards white managers in this country
Paul Ince got a PL job after 18 months in League 2.

What will his expectations be? They have a transfer ban and just lost their best player.
I think he'll have done very well if he manages to keep them in the top four to be honest.

Agreed. Far more interesting than the likes of Huudink, Scolari, Ancelotti, van Gaal, Mourinho etc. I like Lampard (even if he is a Tory) and hope he can make a success of it, though I hope he has a torrid time on opening day.

Like Ole, a classy nice guy who says all the right things but not a top coach. It's not gonna end well for him & Chelsea.

Think it's still a bit too early for him, but I think he'll do ok.

He was no better than the average Championship manager in terms of self presentation. Whined like a little bitch when his team didn't get a penalty awarded against Forest. Few people might see another side to Fwankie this season.

Complaining about a pen that should’ve been called? For the love of Christ I’m sure Roman is regretting the decision now.

The bookies have Lampard and OGS joint favourites to be sacked next season. Would be interesting to see who goes first. I am fairly certain both will last only a season or less at their respective clubs.

Wasn't thinking about the average Chelsea dumby, more the rest of us who've been sold the idea that Frank Lampard is a reasonable man with reasonable opinions and a reasonable temperament. He is not. He runs screaming round his house after midnight wearing a night dress and lipstick yelling about that over-the-line goal against Germany. He is very very egotistical and I for one will sit back and laugh when you inevitablatably enter a transfer embargoed post-Roman empire sentimental managerial choice decline.

The spat with Bielsa over “spygate” was pathetic also. And Derby with him in charge did worse than under the mighty Gary Rowett the previous season.

The only reason I believe he will fare better than our own sentimental managerial choice is that Chelsea seems to have a more robust support structure for the manager than United.

Are people underestimating Lampard?

I understand people being sceptical towards ex players but this is one of the finest tactical players to have existed. You can’t compare him like for like with other players. He has no significant coaching experience but he has played in one of the more complex and demanding positions on the pitch, at the highest level, under some of the worlds best coaches. He is not a hot head nor is he an egomaniac who has spent his career running up and down the wings playing some limited positional role.

Well worth the risk from Chelsea’s side. I also think this is much more calculated from chelsea than many think. Chelsea should have a dark cloud over them for at least a year considering the ban. Now they have a real buzz and excitement around the place. The expectations are very very low. Top 6 would be acceptable this season, which would be unheard of any other year.

He said he wanted to be treated like any other Chelsea manager. He'll be looking for a new job in a year and a half then.

Rudd Gullit became Chelsea manager with no experience at all. Also, how many 'white english' ex players get to manage a Champions league team? Dont see them whinning about bias against them.

Will be interesting to see who is going to be the bigger disaster.
Ole or Frank. I cannot imagine that one of them will still be in place at the end of next season.

Chelsea with Lampard as manager and without Hazard should lift our chances of a top 4 finish.

It seems that Chelsea are in a bit of a similar situation like us with Sarri being viewed as „negative“ desperate for a successor who will bring good mood st least.

In reality both us and Chelsea have not been great the past few years and Mourinho and Sarri got something out of those quite average teams.

Who will get sacked first Ole or Frank. Toss of a coin. Two inexperienced managers in charge of two big clubs. All we need is Henry to take over at the Arse and will be a free for all

It's not like a player coming to the end of their career though, if anything it's the exact opposite Lampard has all the time in the world to become Chelsea manager. Not only does the move show a lack of loyalty to Derby the move itself could be a major setback to his managerial career. Lampard himself knows how it'll go if things dont go well for him at Chelsea next season, he'll be shown the door like every other manager has at which point where does he go from there?
If things don't go well at Derby next season, he may be shown the door just as well. Only in that scenario his stock won't be anywhere near what it is now and him taking over at Chelsea would be a remote possibility. This is a very competitive business, things change fast and jobs like Chelsea's are far and few in between. Of course, it's a risky move and a high pressure position but if you don't take those opportunities when they present themselves, you may never get them again.

The timing is perfect. Transfer ban gives Lampard an opportunity to integrate youngsters and he'll have plenty of help. His staff is full of Chelsea people who either worked within the club before (Jody Morris, Eddie Newton, Chris Jones, Joe Edwards) or ex-CFC legends like Drogba and Makelele who are supposedly going to also work with the team in some capacity.

I gladly admit I've been wrong, then. And I would be extremely surprised if Lampard of all ex players would turn out to be a similar coach to Sarri. After all he's like the embodiment of classic English football. Very vertical and direct, man long balls and long shots, crosses etc. I mean, from all top players of that era, I think Lampard would've been one of the worst fits for Barca's playing style.

It really is hard to judge how good a manager is based on one season. Jaap Stam looked great for Reading a few years back then fell away big time in the second season. There’s been plenty of examples where a new man has come in somewhere, looked like a potential next great manager then fall away in the second season, because all the other teams now know what they do and they didn’t change to suit that.

Lampard can probably enjoy a bit less pressure on him due to the transfer ban, but he’s still at the mercy of knee jerk Roman who I wouldn’t be surprised has Max Allegris number already prepared on his speed dial.

I'm not sure why the Chelsea job is being painted as a difficult one. The job as it is now is perfect for Lampard and Morris to take over. A solid first team squad with a host of super talented youth and previously overlooked potential first reamers returning from loans. Plus there will be no pressure to win the league IMO of he does well they will be dark horses for the title

With Lamps as boss, RLC in midfield and Marina running things we really are the best looking club, and that's all that really matters.

The only one of that trio that is good looking is RLC.

Edit: Lampard looks like troll face.

I’m curious myself, but if I’ve learnt one thing, it is that players don’t often become coaches similar to the players they were. Often quite the opposite.

I’ve heard a Derby fan mention Lampard’s Derby as ‘possesion oriented, at times toothless against a low block’, but I haven’t really seen them.

This analysis is interesting, and does strike me as in many ways compatible with Sarriball, albeit more emphasis on forward drive:

He's a patsy isn't he, he's the Solskjaer for them, the romantic option? No matter what he does there good bad indifferent, he's having the bullet soon as another ideal candidate becomes available.

I think he knows that as well, but the money is better there than Derby. He can't buy any one, Hazard gone, nothing much coming through there youth system? I feel hes got a tough job there. Transfer ban has not helped at all.

The press will love him though?

Nothing much coming through the youth system? Are you joking? The youth system is probably the brightest point about the club at the moment.

So if he wins the league and Champions League

Not much coming through the youth system? Christensen, RLC, Hudson-Odoi, Ampadu and maybe Abraham will be part of the first team squad and there a load waiting in the wings if Lampard needs them. It'll be more youth players than Chelsea have had for literally decades.

i think the modern obsession with transfers has totally overblown the impact of the two window transfer ban. There seems to be a lot of United and Arsenal fans clinging onto the hope that Chelsea will be a shambles because of it. The starting X1, with players in brackets potentially covering the first 2/3 months of the season, would be

Kepa

Azpilicueta, Luiz, Rudiger (Christensen/Zouma), Emerson

Kante, Jorginho, Loftus-Cheek (Kovacic/Barkley)

Willian, Giroud, Hudson-Odoi (Pulisic)

Pulisic possibly could start ahead of Willian when everybody is fit but i think Lampard will take to Willian.

Striker is the obvious area with the biggest question but there are options with Giroud, Abraham and Batshuayi to find a solution, probably overall better options than we had last season.

I would say that apart from Giroud, every single player in that starting X1, and the players in brackets too, walk into both the Arsenal and United starting X1.

He will be sacked a few months in. He will be there version of Kenny Daglish or OGS. Has disaster written all over it.

Dalglish won the league for Liverpool 3 out his first 5 seasons. He was the opposite of a disaster as a rookie manager.

If Lampard does that, I'll be fine!

As for OGS, surely the jury is still out on him?
