Fittest player in the squad, apparently.

Fair play, he's obviously been doing some preparation to get himself ready for preseason. Bodes well in terms of attitude/work ethic.

I think it probably helps he was already a million miles ahead of the rest of the team! You can't shift like he does if you don't have some serious fitness levels.

I just hope a small part of it rubs off on Martial. Martial could be incredible with higher effort levels.

Not surprised in the slightest, how many injury prone players have we on our books?

We've others like Lukaku who are far too heavy and carrying too much muscle as well, Rojo has piled the weight on it seems looking at him in recent footage. Pudgy little round face on him.

Looking over my shoulder.
After being called up to the Wales squad, Giggs said he's the quickest player he's ever seen.
He said he was faster than himself at a similar age as well. A Norwegian football pundit who follows the Championship saumys he's the fastest he ever saw in the Championship as well. Definitely faster than prime Bale. Mbappe I'm not sure, but Traore looks lightening. Prime Valencia was also rapid, but I think James is faster.

Without being negative, this window has been slow and the players we bought on tour do not excite as it is 95% the squad we ended up with last year. Saying that James excites me a lot and I have not been as excited with a new signing since Martial joined a few yeara back. He has a lot of potential talent wise but the thing that impresses me the most is his attitude and work rate. I know the championship is one thing but if he continues to work in that way, he could be a steel at 15m. I am really not surprised that he is above the rest of our squad, they are lazy.

Work rate and pace are impressive. With space in behind, he will be devastating. The only worry for me is when teams park the bus, does he have enough in his locker and technique wise to hurt them. If he has or develops it here, we have a winner. His attitude seems spot on so far. Long may it continue and i hope he stays away from the rotten guys in the squad and rather mingles with Tuanzebe, Wan Bissaka, Gomes, Greenwood, Garner, Lindelöf and maybe Shaw as well.

Wouldn't doubt that, would love to see a race with him and Mbappe and Adama Traore.

Maybe a young Valencia in his prime but not sure he had the top speed.
Valencia was rapid as feck, especially before he started piling on the muscle. He’d definitely compete with them in his prime.

David Beckham could apparently complete the test also
Madness. I was never fit enough for them. I could play 90 minutes of football easily and still sprint easily near the end, but a bleep test always killed me. Obviously not comparing myself to professional footballers, but feck I had nightmares about them

He only got ‘near’ according to that. Shame Kagawa didn’t work out, he had a lot of attributes.
Yeah, when these stats are posted I always remember Kagawa. Was so much hyped when we finally signed attacking mid.

It's already happening. I said that Martial's labored approach to football will look horrendous compared to James and that he could end up in trouble. If James is ready to contribute even half of what Martial does on the ball, he's going to move ahead of him before the season has even started.

This is good. He is fired up and motivated.

The problem we seem to have is that new players arrive fit and healthy. They play well for about 5 games. That's all fine. Then they seem to get effected by "the virus" and their performance drops through the floor. A year later, everybody feels that the player needs to be moved on.

When Darmian first arrived, he was damn good, as our RB. With the progression of time, his performances dropped to such a level that he may as well not be in the squad.
Same for Miki. Lukaku also got fat, a year after joining us. Di Maria was on fire when he first joined. Some fans could not believe that we actually managed to a sign a player of this calibre.
I could go on, but you get my point.

I'm not 100% sure if James can play LW, but if he can, Martial may find himself as the 2nd choice LW, behind James, who has come from the Championship. I think that would be highly embarrassing for Martial.

Unfortunately he doesn't look to have anywhere near half of Martial's natural ability.

Apparently Martial returned to training early to get fitter so let’s hope he’s bringing a different attitude this season.

Is this test consistent across all leagues/sports? Or do we have modified versions?
Not sure. It seems elite level is 14-17 from the article.

Yeah, it says Beckham reached 16 which is considered as exceptional. Thanks for the article.

I'm sure he is actually predominantly a LW. He's not a RW at all by the sounds of it as he likes to cut in onto his right foot.

Unfortunately he doesn't look to have anywhere near half of Martial's natural ability.
We'll see. I reckon he's not as silky on the ball, but the added pace can make a huge difference. Lucas Moura has proven to be a useful player for Spurs, for example, and I'd say he's nowhere near as talented as Martial.

He absolutely needs to. All the coaches will push for James to be given chances if he continues to impress in training and shows the right attitude.

The fastest AND the fittest? that's a rare combination.

I have a feeling our little pocket rocket is going to surprise a few people. He seems determined and ready to grab this big opportunity, I wish the rest of our squad had the same mentality.

Let's hope he scares Martial into giving more than 50%, what i'd give to see a hungry Tony :(

Article on the bleep test claims it impossible to complete, Becks got to 16 according to this.

https://www.topendsports.com/testing/results/beep-test.htm
Yeah, 'maxed out' sounds like a load of bollocks.

There are other variants like the yo-yo test which is more commonly used by top clubs now because it better replicates the fitness requirements of the sport. One of the versions - the yo-yo intermediate recovery level 1 - can be completed by the super fit and quick.

I thought that. I'm not even sure what kind of athlete would be suited to completing it. Cyclists and long distance runners would have the highest aerobic capacity, but neither are set up to run a bleep test optimally.
Guy I went to school with got to 17 whilst at school. He's a Team GB Level Rower though. Was surreal to watch.

Long distance runners are a good shout - I do think where they would suffer is toward the higher levels of the test when it speeds way up and it becomes more of a fast run/slow sprint. On my college soccer team we had to hit level 12 by the end of pre-season to be declared fit enough to be included in the matchday squad. We had one kid run 14 and he was obliterated. I can't imagine someone getting all the way to level 16 like Beckham allegedly did.

How is anyone supposed to appreciate that video? At least have someone like Rashford run alongside him to give some sort of reference.

That doesn't sound right.
Rowers tend to be very large human beings and the bigger you are, the worse you are likely to do in a cardiovascular test, which relies on being quick and nimble.
The body type most likely to be do well in a beep test is Lingard.or even someone like Jamie Vardy. A 400m runner should also be quite good at this. All these body types are slim and light.

Sir Stephen Redgrave for example (multiple Olympic Gold winning rower), would be gassed if he was asked to run fast at ever increasing speeds, having to turn quickly and run in the opposition direction, at the sound of every beep.
Lukaku would also be a good example of what rower's physique would look like - heavy and powerful, as opposed to light and nimble.

With that stamina and speed and lack of natural ability he should slot into right back like Valencia did for us. He’d be a dominating right back for many many years to come

What is the point of this needless negativity?

He's a young lad, let people be excited about him.
