I'm not Smallings biggest fan but he's the last player we should get rid of currently.
By your logic, we should keep Smalling until we can sell Rojo and Jones?

Any player that clearly doesnt have a future with us should be sold as soon as possible, with the order in which they are sold being almost irrelevant.

Should Smalling have a future with us? My answer is a categorical NO!

You can’t trust the market, there’s always the scenario we sell Smalling but fail to buy a CB and are left with Rojo/Jones.

Priority should be to sell the glass defenders first. In my opinion though, Smalling should stay as backup to our eventual strong back line.

Milenkovic would be a good fixed RB, he can cover Lindelof's weakness at heading and also fill any gaps in defence if Lindelof ventures forward. It would also allow the LB attacking freedom.

That 'best' defender doesnt have a future at the club

That is a sequence you work out during the transfer window, which is different from not getting rid of him cos he is better than Rojo and Jones. As long as we bring in a better quality CB, selling Smalling is a step in the right direction.

The reality is that we are unlikely to get buyers for Rojo and Jones and would likely have to let them go on a free. Jones contract expires at the end of the season but Rojo contracts ends in 2021!. Do we then keep Smalling's till then?

Best way forward imo, let Jones go on a free and sell either or both of Rojo or Smalling (depending on price and interest) to bring in one top quality CB and a talented youngster (specific order within the transfer window can be worked out).

According to who?
According to anyone that knows anything about the quality of players required to compete at the top.

Smallings is 29 and we have all seen what he has to offer and unfortunately it is not enough. His minutes will be better utilized to develop a younger and more talented CB.

To think otherwise is to either be comfortable with mediocrity or delusional about what Smalling offers.

Smalling got an extension and isnt going anywhere the next few seasons.

Koulibaly and Skriniar wont be on our list imo, after buying this guy for 40m, we wont go out and shell out another 100m on a CB. Toby for 25m next summer is my guess or only Milenkovic. If he is a hit and Lindelöf grows more, i dont see a big issue anyway

That is so unbelievably nonsensical I can't believe it's a genuine opinion. Smalling should not leave the club before the defenders far worse than him go first.

I'm so glad the people who think like you do are on RedCafe and no where near making decisions for the club.

I dont particularly rate Chris Smalling very highly but in my opinion he is the best we have got at the club. I think he should be sold but not immediately, although when we get someone in who can perform better than him, I would get rid of him.

I think Rojo should be the first one out as people moan about Phil Jones injury record (I'd get rid of him too). Jones and Rojo have similar injury records.

Rojo has only played 70 league games in 5 seasons and only 11 in the last 2 seasons sustaining 9 injuries and been injured for a total of 534 days. Not his fault but it is an abysmal record.

During the same time period Jones has played 74 games, had 12 injuries and been injured 453 days.

This is not good enough at all and due to this I think both need to go.

so if you cant sell those far worse players and need to run out their contracts, you hold on to Smalling as well? Apologies but that would be just stupid.

Its people with your kind of thinking that have mismanaged the squad and left us with the level of mediocrity we have, such that a player like Smalling is deemed valuable.

We have a bunch of mediocre CBs that should be sold asap. The faster the better and it doesnt really matter who goes first cos whoever is left behind should be relegated to 4th or 5th choice and thus rarely sees playing time

The question of order only comes up if you can sell both players and then you look at which gives you the best value.

You don't sell your most consistent defender because a deluded poster on a football forum thinks so. You talk so much nonsense that it's pointless even discussing this with you further.

Koulibaly would be a brilliant signing, but would cost a ridiculously high fee. Skriniar would cost alot too and imo isn't as good as the transfer fee would suggest. Milenkovic is better than Skriniar in aerial duels and can operate quite comfortably as a RB which Skriniar struggled with. Milenkovic is also quicker than Skriniar which makes the young Serb a extremely interesting prospect. Milenkovic will surpass Skriniar in 2 years imo.
He’s not better in the air than Skriniar (especially in the attacking headers) even though he’s taller.Yes he’s young but I don’t understand the hype because he isn’t very good in the air, he isn’t better than Lindelöf in passing, he is clumsy and often makes stupid fouls. He reminds me young Smalling with better ball control.

Milenkovic is very good in the air and better than Skriniar in that department. Even a well known Inter fan who works for Di Marzio agrees that Milenkovic has the higher ceiling.

Milenkovic averages 3.2 aerial duels won playing for Serbia in the nations league. Which is impressive...

I believe in my eyes and every time I watch Fiorentina he is not as impressive. Maybe he’s good but he’s not as good as you describe. I remember his game against Juve, that game he was average, he couldn’t header even one ball properly. I saw that Italian guy who said that Milenkovic has a higher ceiling than Andersen, but I rate Andersen higher(he’s more complete player)right now and he’s only 6 months older.

He's playing out of position for Fiorentina at RB. Did you watch him play at CB at the World Cup?

You sell him cos the only thing consistent about that defender is mediocrity and only someone comfortable with mediocrity would keep him

I was impressed with him in the World Cup. If I went through my posts I'd definitely be able to find my praise for him.

I would like to see us bring in 2 CB's. Milenkovic with an experienced CB like Alderweireld. Milenkovic can cover at RB also.

He may well be a really good player (I don't know, I've never watched him), but I don't think it's worth paying a January premium for a player from a foreign league.

I'd only ever pay the normal price in Summer, or buy a must-have PL defender for an inflated price in the Winter.

He's got a buy out clause, so there'd be no premium winter nor summer.

I really don’t understand the hype around this player, every time I watch Fiorentina I’m not impressed by him. So average in 1vs1 situations and makes positional errors. Even now watching him against Torino I don’t see his ball playing abilities as people describe here. I understand he’s young and played as a RB. But if he’s not good enough to play as a CB in Fiorentina that means he’s not good enough for us.

United have tabled a €40m bid for the young Serb according to Di Marzio who is currently on air on Sky Italia. Fiorentina are asking for €50m.

Yeah, we got priced out of Maguire.

Anyone know how he did at the U21? Serbia got pretty much demolished.

Andersen was there for 30m, dont know why we didnt go for him at that price.

Definitely us? Sounds too sensible. I thought he looked decent on his highlights and was wondering why we he wasn't an option instead of Maguire etc. €50m is a good deal if he's as good as everyone thinks. I've not seen a lot.

He didn't do great and neither did the likes of Jovic. @R'hllor basically summed up the mess the Serbs are in at NT level.

Di Marzio reporting that we initiated contact two days ago with Fiorentina.

Not particularly impressed when I've seen him. We have enough CB projects, go buy a ready made one to lead this defence like we have needed since Vidic and Rio both gave in to father time.
