So many people missing the point here. Those goals won awards, won accolades but...
I bet opposition fans played this one down because of who scored it (thinking it was a fluke or whatever)

That's a fantastic shout. If it had been a more technically gifted player it would be considered genius

Henry is probably exhibit number one in greatest players who are being quietly forgotten. Incredible player, reached and maintained the highest level of any player in the history of the PL(excluding Ronaldo as the majority of his best years were elsewhere), really should have won at least one World Player of the year award.
Aye, the likes of Mbappe doesn't come close.

A lot of goals get discredited because of who scored it.

I remember Cameron Jerome hitting an absolute pile driver from 35 yards which went straight into the top corner. Probably one of the best goals I’ve ever seen but it didn’t even win goal of the month.

I hear you. Seen plenty crackers scored against us by lesser teams. There was one absolute sledgehammer from something like 40 yards in UCL in early 00s. Think it was a Greek side. Or Turkish.

Benteke’s overhead kick against us was absolutely fecking crazy. It got completely overlooked because of Martial’s debut goal

Always thought Rooney's 2011 Champions League final goal against Barca was totally forgotten/ underrated.

Great goals scored by teams that lost on the day are usually swept under the carpet a bit.

The Benteke overhead kick against us when Martial scored on his debut isn't talked about much, but it was as emphatic as an overhead kick gets, but if anyone was going to show one highlight from that game, it's the Martial goal.

Darren Fletcher's goal in our horrible 1-6 drubbing was a beauty. and I think Rooney scored a great consolation goal against City at the Etihad one time too.

Giroud smashed one in against us late on when we held out for a win at the Emirates too, on the half volley facing away from goal. That was a great goal.

3 goals stand out for me :

Mark Hughes overhead-kick for Wales against Spain in 85 - Amazing

Matt Le Tissier - well most of his goals but that special one where he takes it on his heels, chips 2 players and scored

Last but not least - the amazing team goal against Norwich in 1992/93 when Kanchelskis scored. We won the ball near our own goal - 4 Quick one-touch passes later, and Kanchelskis was alone with Gunn.

Yikes at the topic but i do find it a bit odd that any deflected goal gets any sort of credit. A deflection should remove pretty much any credit from the person who hit the ball, utter fluke.
95% of fat Frank's goals discredited then. And rightly so too.

Henry for Arsenal at Blackburn - all the way down the left exchanging passes with Cesc. The Arse were down to 10 men.

Brilliantly worked goal, very decent finish. Never gets a mention.

It's a good strike but the height it goes in at and the distance he strikes it from would point to an error from Almunia.
I dunno, it picks up speed as it approaches him, no way he's stopping that. The commentator mentions he was beaten for pace, but I'm sure Jim 'everythings crap unless Liverpool did it' Beglin had a moan about the keeper.

Quite a depressing night all told, so that makes sense!

Has there ever been a goal that you’ve seen in professional football that you thought was outstanding but the goal was always played down or discredited for absolutely ridiculous reasons by press, football pundits or fans?

*Edit* Waaaaaay too many people missing the point here. The goals below might have won awards and polls but still get discredited for whatever reason.

I’ll get the ball rolling with a few….

Wayne Rooney’s overhead kick vs City in 2011: To show that level of athleticism, to get that high, in that magnitude of a game and stick it in the top corner was phenomenal. However, I always felt it was discredited because he “shinned it”. So many people discredited the goal because it didn’t 100% strike his foot, despite it being a deliberate attempt to score.

Mkhitaryan’s scorpion goal vs Sunderland in 2016: Crazy attempt on goal and received goal of the month, however. I felt it was played down moreso because it was perceived as offside. Once Giroud replicated it, it was completely played down altogether.

Bergkamp’s pirouette vs Newcastle in 2002: Absolutely incredible pirouette on Dabizas and slotted home. Felt it was totally discredited because it was a perceived fluke. I genuinely believe people who think it was, totally underestimate the genius of Bergkamp and only a certain type of player could pull it off. Never felt it got the credit it deserved.

Any more you can think of and why?

Wayne Rooney's is right up there with the greatest United goals of all time, it's a disgrace that people mention it came off his shin. To do that in that moment, in that game. Incredible goal.

Mikhitryans goal similar it was so instinctive and unique, for people to downplay it....just appreciate it. Giroud pissed me off....he wouldn't have even considered it had mikhi not done it the day before. He probably spent hours practicing it after. To my knowledge it hasn't been done since. It was just so unique which made it special....until that cock did it a few days later. Couldn't have thought it up himself but goes and copies it days later and gets more credit.

Bergkamps was the mark of the player. Pure class.

Probably one of the greatest goals of all time from Henry, against Weiz in a friendly however so no one really cares.
:lol::lol: That's just ridiculous doesn't matter the context of the game....that's disgusting

Think you've completely missed the point... they won accolades sure. But the skill involved has always been played down. Maybe google Wayne Rooney shin while you're at it. ;)
I understand your point, but you're wrong. It hasn't "always been played down". You can find contrarian opinions about everything on the internet.

Might as well name Maradona's goal vs England for how many times I've seen people call it "just bad defending"

To put this into perspective, the world went crazy about CR7's volley against us. Vardy did it with his left foot, and though it was appreciated, it wasn't appreciated as much as it should have been.

Now you tell me which one is better?

You'd have to go back decades. Whole premise of the op is upside down. Coverage is so relentlessly over the top that "unbelievable" goals are screamed about all week. (Only difference is that there's cameras everywhere so they may have to fight for attention.)
But here's a genuinely unbelievable goal that you've never heard about: Go to 1:45

There was a Rooney goal vs Liverpool with Reina in goal that was ruled out due to what was supposed to be a foul in the build up. Wasn't even a foul and the goal should have stood & they didn't even put it in the highlights on MOTD when it happened. I'll try find it & edit if I manage.

Edit:
This is the best video I can find
I know the keeper stopped but that was going in regardless. Bloody hell what a strike

A class example has to be Bale’s bicycle kick in the final of the Champions League. It was the bigger occasion and technique wise was probably more difficult. But because of Ronaldo scoring one against Juventus that gets mentioned more.

I'll go with Mr Beckham v Arsenal FA Cup Semi Replay 1999.

Fantastic goal, genuinely great strike, placement and awareness.

Somewhat overshadowed by Ryan Giggs doing something or other that day...

I’m sure others have mentioned it - but Rooney’s goal was voted the best goal of the PL era. It may have been superceeded now - but it’s not been discredited at all.

Always overshadowed by his free kick vs France:

Puskas scores from a corner with outside of his foot:

Beckham's free kick vs Real Madrid because we were chasing the game. Evra vs Bayern for the same reason. I guess someone has mentioned it but Fletcher vs City is in the same category.

Most of the goals posted (including in the OP) are literally the opposite. Goals that people jizz over despite being flukes or mishits.

So I'll join in with the most overrated goal of recent times.

Giroud's initial flick into Wilshere is so mistimed that he has to stick out a leg on the run attempting to direct it to the other Arsenal player behind Giroud (Cazorla?). By pure fluke it ends up back at Giroud's foot who is able to find Wilshere while the entire Norwich defence is stood like statues wondering how the hell the ball ended up there. It baffles me that people actually believed that was a genuinely intentionally good one-two.

2 goals from that 7:1 win over Roma. Smith scoring after string of one touch passes across the field and Carricks second goal into top corner. Neither one of those got the praise they deserve.
