Maldini springs to mind one of the best LBs and then CBs of all time. Phenomenal player. He was right footed as well.
Definately. For me, in my lifetime, the best left back I have seen by a golden mile, world class centre back and even still a quality centre back when was really old

Can't believe it took so long for him to be mentioned.

LW in his breakthrough at Spurs and played as a proper winger.
RW for the majority of the period he was a world class player.
SS for Wales in the Euros and was fantastic
..... and not forgetting Bale started his career as a LB at Southampton before making the transition to LW at Spurs.

James Milner. Still not sure what his better position is
Can play anywhere, but for me half his career been wasted doing so. By far his best periods of his career were the period he played for Aston Villa, which prompted City to shell out a fortune for him (and then waste him by not playing him in that position) and his time at Liverpool. I think he has always been a top quality central midfielder but merely a functional player everywhere else, a lot of it down to a lack of pace

Javier Zanetti. He was fantastic on either flank, and also did quite well when he was called upon to play in midfield (2008-2009 comes to mind when Mourinho was facing a midfield crisis and used Zanetti as a midfielder).
Yeah, phenomenal and loyal player that doesnt get mentioned so much in comparison to the likes of Totti when he should be, one of the best right backs I can remember

Dirk Kuyt played as a striker, left and right winger, midfielder and even as a wingback in a world cup semi final.

Bang average at most, but he did do it on the highest level mostly.

Totti started and finished his club career with Roma, while Zanetti came from Argentina where he already played for 2 clubs. One is one club man other one isn't, that's why you can't compare 2 of them.

James Milner. Very good in midfield (R.W or C.M) as well as at Left back. We are going into the season as the champions of Europe and he’ll still be our back up Left Back so it shows how competent he is imo.

Surprised noone has mentioned Keano yet.

Central midfielder at Forest - due to an injury crisis, he was moved into central defense and was their best player in that position, as well as scoring a lot of goals. Came to United and was moved to right-back, before he made the central midfield his position.

West brown is the greatest all rounder I've ever seen. Both Footed, could shoot, could defend, could pick out a 40 yard pass with pinpoint accuracy, could slot in for anyone.

Debate over.

Gallas was solid at left back when he played there.

John Wark? I mostly remember him as a veteran player from when Ipswich were in the Premier League in the early to mid 90s. Think he was their captain then. He could play in defence, midfield or up front. Good goalscoring record on him too, top scorer for Liverpool one season in the 80s. Not world class or anything, but I always got the impression he was at least decent in a few positions.

Scholes - AM and CM.
TBH, his best came as DLP.

Paolo Maldini was a pretty decent centre-half and left-back.
Pretty decent

I think a foreigner coming into a league in a totally different culture and being so loyal and having so much love for a club for so many years is just as admirable myself.
As much as I loved and respected Totti as a player, for me personally he wouldnt come into consideration as one of the best ever players in his position from my lifetime, Zanetti actually would, that was more the point I was trying to make in that he should be mentioned more as such a great player showing so much loyatly and love for a club as I think he is one of the very best right backs, much life Cafu was too...but he was only at Milan for a few years wasnt he

In all seriousness though he was so versatile for us. That left footed cross he did in Moscow 2008 for ronaldos goal never gets praised.

A team of 11 wes browns would probably be the goat of one man 11s. The 2nd prize going to sergio Ramos and thirdly John o'shea.

Hargreaves was a good CDM and RB but was just always injured.
My very first thought. Was an alright RM to.

Sergio Ramos was a beast of a RB at Sevilla, and we all know how he's done at CB since moving to Madrid.
Completely forgot about this but he was. He was touted to replace Gary Neville at united if i remember properly, before moving to Madrid.

Modric, Blind, Nani, Samba, Kieran Richardson, David Bentley.

Other than Modric and Nani who were world class in multiple, these were all decent to an extent.

From a Chelsea-centric pov I would say

Desailly
Paulo Ferreira
Gallas

and two i would award cult status from my younger years Babayaro and Petrescu, especially Petrescu still one of my favourite players to this day a beautiful player to watch could play anywhere and i would say criminally underrated even among Chelsea fans.

Branislav Ivanovic was pretty good for Chelsea at CB and RB.
Goals and the whole "blood and guts" style earned him a much more flattering reputation than he merited in my opinion. Severely over rated by other sets of fans. He was woeful positionally especially at CB.

Some honorable mentions of less heralded players:

Phillip Cocu - anywhere in midfield
Giuseppe Bergomi - RB and CB
Giuseppe Signori - LW and CF
Hristo Stoichkov - LW, SS, CF
Angelo Di Livio - CM, RM
Fernando Hierro - CB, CDM, CM
Victor Onopko - SW, CB, CDM

More to follow....

Wasn't Leo Messi's wing primarily the right wing? Also, he could be added as number 10.
Other choices:
Zidane: left midefield and centre.
Lahm: left back, right back, midfield
Iniesta: Left forward, left CAM
Rivaldo: Left mid, a 10, centre forward

Yep. I remember always buying him on manager mode in fifas 06-08? I think. He always became the the highest rated RB in the game.

If I remember correctly he played in the world cup 2006 and I was convinced he would become the best rb in the world - similar to Riberys breakthrough with France, who was also a must sign on fifa manager mode.

Time flies

Keane won supporters player of the season at Forest playing sweeper/centre back. Then he did alright at Utd in midfield.

Fernandinho was a winger in the first half of his career, a CM in Shakhtar and DM in City.
