Such a grimly unimaginative choice.

Being a Newscastle fan must be pretty shit.

As a former United man, maybe he will help us get Longstaff in. We need all the help we can get.

I do like Brucey though, so hope he does well. Think he is a local lad and a boyhood Newcastle fan, so at least he will care about the club, although thinking about it, didn't he manage Sunderland? In that case, I don't know what I'm talking about.

wouldn't be surprised if Fat Sam gets a call mid-season

I get that Newcastle are his boyhood club and all, but didn't Wednesday basically allow him compassionate leave before taking up the post not so long ago? Seems a little sharp.

Don’t rate him as a manager at all. Think he’ll be sacked by Christmas. Newcastle seem like a shoe in to be relegated this season anyway, but Bruce isn’t exactly going to be a big help.

So what happened to that takeover? I remember few people on here getting worried over it when the guy wanted to take over seemed like a crook.

He's probably got the safest job in football. Mike Ashley's checked out. Bruce will be there as long as he wants.

Agreed. I thought some of the criticism he got for not taking over at Wednesday immediately was out of order, but he's only been there 5 minutes and I'd have thought he might at least be a little loyal now.

He must be mad to take it too, can't see there being much money for transfers and they've already flogged off Perez, Longstaff possibly going as well.

From Newcastle's pov, with Ashley wanting out and the likely lack of investment I can't see them actually attracting anyone that great so Bruce is probably about as good as they could hope for.

One less relegation spot to worry about if this happens.

Newcastle are desperately short of goals now Rondon and Perez have gone. Think their only out and out strikers are Muto, Joselu and Dwight Gayle. Can see them getting desperate and offering any of Andy Carroll, Sturridge or Balotelli a deal.

If ever a club is just drifting it’s Newcastle. It’s yet another appointment that will keep them afloat but they will make painful viewing in achieving it.

They will need 3-4 decent signings just to get 17th. Seriously short of goals and they'll be easier to score against without Benitez organisation.

Thought he'd have learnt not to join clubs that are a mess after Sunderland but here he is again, absolute mad man.

I might just be having a bad day but I know another club this could equally apply to ......

Looking at Newcastle helps put our situation in context
We don’t even need to look that far down the table. Look at Arsenal with an owner who actively funnels money out of the club to fund his other businesses, all while the club barely spend anything themselves.

Wow this guy is getting to be one of the biggest managerial mercenaries of the modern game, very quick to jump ship and no shame/scruples. Managed Sheffield United/Wednesday, Birmingham City/Villa and now Hull/Sunderland/Newcastle?

Newcastle fans surely can't be happy with this?

Sheffield Wednesday went out of their way when appointing him. He's only been there 6 months?

Started management at Sheffield United. Now at Sheffield Wednesday

Barely through the door at Crystal Pace before getting a better offer at Birmingham

Don’t think it will stop him rolling up at Newcastle if that’s offered and what he wants

In 2001 he was manager of 3 clubs in one year
Started the year at Wigan. Went to Palace and then quickly to Birmingham.
Probably his most successful time as a manager

If he moves that will be the 10th club he has managed since 1998

Been manager at Sunderland. Not normally something the Geordies would like.
But they are desperate.

Once thought to be the next United manager after SAF retired

Quite a journey man.

Backing them to go down.

How in the world have they come to the conclusion that Bruce is the man for the job?

He's interested and relatively cheap. Who else would go there?

Literally anybody but Bruce? I mean he’s a bang average manager who’s found himself at a mid table championship club.

You’re trying to say it’s a good appointment?

We aren't. He's absolute garbage.

Well ... I say "we". There is a weird subset of our fanbase stuck in their ways who will always turn up to the stadium no matter how badly Ashley shafts them. They'll keep chanting "give him time" and then feel vindicated when Bruce scrapes his first win in December.

THEY are probably quite happy with it. A prodigal son returning to the North East.

The most infuriating though is that this regime is going to back him like they backed McClaren and we're going down in flames again. They could have backed Rafa but no. It's such a self inflicted wound.

Well I asked who else would go there, not who should they appoint.

We all know Ashley wants out, that he doesn't invest in the team, and that Benitez walked because of a lack of funds. Rondon hasn't been made a permanent signing, they've sold Perez while managerless, Longstaff rumours are still around. Seeing as Ashley is tight with money he probably doesn't want to pay the new manager that much either. They're being asset-stripped.

The club looks like one to avoid for an up and coming manager as it could wreck his reputation as they might well go down. After what happened with Benitez no big name well-established/quality manager is likely to want the gig either, even if they were willing to pay him handsomely which is doubtful. That mostly leaves bang average older managers who don't have much to lose.

I'd say it was a realistic appointment given the circumstances. They could do a lot better if they promised the new manager a nice transfer kitty and meant it, and paid him well but that ain't happening.

Aren't you/they bothered about the Hull and worst still, Sunderland connection?? Obviously he has no shame having managed both Sheffield and Birmingham clubs.

He doesn't want out. He says he's wanted out for 10 years but somehow every propsective buyer walks away. There's always something. He's never leaving.

I won't lie - it's not a great look. The Hull connection isn't a big deal to me personally though.

It's his incompetence that bothers me most.

Well he won't have much of a hiding place up there at the Toon. I could see him dragging Newcastle back down and Wednesday getting promoted. That's the kind of serendipity that occurs in these type of situations.

You wouldn't know he was an ex red legend on here.

Good luck to him, hardly gonna turn down Newcastle whilst he's at a skint Sheff Wednesday. Massive club and fan base, okay it's a crap owner but that might change.

True, I just have a real issue with journeymen managers and our ex-players (Hughes and Bruce) are 2 examples. I agree with the guy above it's such an uninspiring choice to go with managers like this. You know what you're getting....averageness like they've always churned out. I'd rather see my club give a young manager a start regardless of the associated risks with that!

Do Newcastle and Hull have a big rivalry? I've never been aware of it before.
I don't think so, Hull barely have any rivals.

They consider Leeds a rival but Leeds don't really care about them as they're more interested in us, Chelsea and others. Sheffield United too, but they're more bothered about Wednesday and Leeds.
