That's great then! Will definitely make an effort to watch.
Might only be an extra three games but you would have to think that playing those competitive games will be a massive boost for the youngsters.
Gomes, Chong, Greenwood, O'Connor, Garner Laird, Williams, Levitt will all likely see playing time, Fosu Mensah, Tuanzebe, Henderson would be eligible as well. It will be exciting to see.

Great news, wondered why we didn’t enter it in the first place. With a new reserves manager, this could really do wonders for some of the lads development. Just hope the refs don’t let them get kicked into next week.
We should've entered into it ages ago, no logic at all.
Not keen on PL U21 sides being in this tournament at all, but then we didn't make the rules.
I'm also sceptical about how much good it will do us. Before U21 PL teams were in this a team would play 6 games to reach the final, sometimes 5 as 16 of 48 sides got a bye in the first round. Now that the U21s have come down it's 8 and the EFL teams are taking it less seriously than ever before because of fixture congestion.
There are some rules to try to ensure they field teams of a certain strength but they're not very strict and lots do the bare minimum.

We'll be playing against what isn't far off their reserves/U21s much of the time which we could have done anyway by arranging friendlies.

- Minimum of four qualifying outfield players in their starting XI. A qualifying outfield player will be one who meets any of the following requirements:
- Any player who started the previous or following first-team fixture
- Any player who is in the top 10 players at the club, who have made the most starting appearances in league and domestic cup competitions that season
- Any player with 40 or more first-team appearances in their career
- Any player on loan from a Premier League club or any EFL Category One Academy club.
We'll be playing against what isn't far off their reserves/U21s much of the time which we could have done anyway by arranging friendlies.
This is a good thing, although I wouldn’t be surprised to see us go out after our first game.

The draw for this is on Friday lunchtime to see who we get. It's on Talksport at 12:30.
The Football League sides have already been placed into groups, with only the U23/reserve sides of the big teams to be drawn out of the hat.

Extra matches for the younger players are always welcomed
I know its u21s but in a competition like this against professional league teams do appearances and goals count as first team stats ?
I'll be sure to watch it. Exciting.

Two things are true
1. It's absurd that Premership/Championship Reserve teams can enter this competition and ruins what is/was a decent competition for League 1 and 2 sides.
2. Whilst it's happening though, we should be sending our lot to take part in it.

I’m absoubtly against this competition.
From a Utd perspective there will be clearly some benefits, and I don’t blame the club, I blame the EFL who have allowed this to happen.
This is taking opportunity from the lower league clubs and their fans to get to a final. I’ve been to the Leyland DAF Cup at the old Wembley and the final when it was held at Cardiff as a Bristol Rovers fan. They took what must have been 30-40k fans.
Reducing these opportunities for players and fans who are never going to compete at the top level is quite frankly scandalous.
Furthermore, for some of the pointless and dead rubber games, the lower league clubs are forced to play a number of players who were in the previous league squad - therefore teams resort to things like substituting their keeper after 30 seconds to give their squad players an opportunity.
The introduction of youth teams from the top clubs has ruined this competition.

I don't have a problem with this. The likes of United's u21s bring big gates to the clubs they face regardless, its good experience for the young lads, and I doubt they'll win the thing anyway.

The alternative is leaving the competition as it was. There was no need to expand it for youth teams. It doesn’t bring bigger crowds either, quite the opposite, average attendances were significantly down last season in the competition.
Of course it’s good experience for the young kids, however it smacks of helping the bigger clubs instead of the smaller ones. PL clubs should have no part in this competition whatsoever.
They don't. They're classed as u23 performances but in a class of their own. If you look at Hudson Odoi stats you can see how they are recorded.
I think they're counted as senior appearances but for an u23 side.

We should treat it as a real trophy and use all of our eligible players (likes of Dalot, Rashford, Lingard and Wan-Bissaka) in the latter stages of the competition.
I assume you are not being serious - but this is exactly the problem with the competition.
Obviously Lingard is not eligible.
How is that the problem when not a single club has done that. Especially as most of those players aren't even eligible to play anyway.

If anyone is looking from a Utd perspective, then it’s not an issue. But there are 72 clubs outside of the PL - and for those in L1 and L2 the chance of getting to Wembley just got less. I wouldn’t be adverse if the PL clubs were part of the group stages, but weren’t allowed to advance to the knockout stages - but the top clubs here are stealing opportunities from our smaller clubs.
