They need to start killing off some characters. I vote Jonathan. I don't feel any tension whenever the monster is chasing someone. Everyone always being saved at the last second is getting old.
That would never happen. You would always see side characters getting killed in this show. This is not Sopranos, it is supposed to be a feel good show for families.

Who was the American the Russian guards were referring in the final scene? Could it be Hopper?

Mike has to be one of the most annoying crap characters of all time. Can't stand him. Apart for that I enjoyed it, better than S2.

I think that’d be the obvious inference.
Seen other rumors say it could be his conspiracy theorist buddy, El’s “dad” from season 1, or possibly even her real dad. My money is on Hop though.

Thought it was a bit meh, just some more of the same silliness to hit the same fecking town. Found most of the kids annoying except for Steve, Robin and Erica. They’ve really dumbed down Hop too which was kinda lame. Did they ever explain how/why the Russians were involved?

For me the first several episodes of season 1 were great, then it all became sorta silly and went downhill. I do appreciate the 80s nostalgia and the show is fine for what it is, some mindless fun. But it doesn’t stack up anywhere near the great shows in the past 10 years like BB, Mad Men, Leftovers, GoT or even Westworld.

Really enjoyed this season. It was overtly cartooney and caricaturey at times, but it's pulled off in such a fun manner. Better than season 2.
  • Steve's character has become one of the best in the show. The girl with him, their bond/chemistry was excellent.
  • On the other hand, Nancy and dourface were pretty aimless and uninteresting.
  • The Russian evil-ness was a tad cheap and never felt as interesting as white hair papa.
  • The humour was on point and the acting was excellent from pretty much everyone.
  • Can see the actor playing Billy going on to do some very good work.

Just brilliant.

I got around to finishing the third season yesterday and I think overall, it was very close to the quality of season one (which is immense praise for anyone that has not see any of it yet). If you like sci-fi themed shows and can get around kids being the main stars, then I would actually go as far to argue that this could go on to be the best sci-fi series ever. It probably already is IMO, although I was never a fan of Star Trek or The X-Files, and FireFly only getting one season kind of rules it out for me.

I feel like throughout its duration so far, the writers have borrowed ideas and themes from a lot of the best pop culture, TV series, and even video games at times. Anyone who was played Resident Evil will probably agree that this season has some similarities to that.

Despite growing up more in the 90's, I think anything with an 80's theme just seems to be better for some reason? And the soundtrack is just absolute killer. For me, Stranger Things is right up there with my favourite ever TV shows. If you said to me a few years ago that some of my favourite shows would be originals from a streaming service I'd have said you were crazy... But Netflix have absolutely nailed this one.

Anyone on the fence should definitely give it a chance.

It has to be Dr. Brenner (El's Dad). Eleven losing her superpowers and then the flashback scene where she was being trained for those powers probably indicates to that. Additionally, Hopper has been given a decent emotional farewell and it wouldn't be the best way forward to bring him back

Did enjoy the third series. You just have to appreciate it for what it is really, it’s supposed to be cliche. I mean the amount of last gasp saves is ridiculous but it’s all part of it

There is no way that Hopper is really dead.

Why? Its perfectly reasonable to assume that. They'd need some really cool loopholes to explain how he survived from there. I mean he was 20-30m away from the hole then, so it is reasonable to expect that e wouldn't have reached that as he clearly didn't make an effort as well

They didn't actively show him die and then referenced an 'American' at the end - he could be dead but it seems extremely unlikely they're going to tease viewers like that and then kill him off anyway in a show where they tend not to kill off their main leads.

Maybe, but like I said, they'll need to explain how he survived and they will need pretty sound logic there. He got a fair end, emotional and all, unlike Dr. Brenner whose end was a bit hastily done, and hence I feel the American will be Dr. Brenner

Finished it last night. Massive improvement on Season 2 and almost on a par with the 1st. After a slow start I really began to look forward to every episode. Agree that there's no way
Hopper is dead but I really wish they'd have got rid of Nancy, Winona, Jonathan and back of the neck boy over Billy for instance. I don't think the show needs any of them.

I didn't mind the one note Russian baddie. Again that was just riffing on a classic 80's action movie trope. Also is it just to me but did all the kids seem to age except Dustin? His hairy legs were freaking me out though. That Neverending Story singalong

Nancy's alright for the most part, Jonathan's been fairly boring since he found his brother in Season 1 though, since then his plot has mostly just boiled down to his dynamic with Nancy. They're not too bad though, hardly dreadful.

Yup, they should go and Billy should be still alive but I guess Nancy and Jonathan served their purpose in elevating our lord savior Steve Harrington to be deity he is now.

Two episodes to go. It's been fun and zippy, and I'm appreciating how much darker this season has been. It shows that the show is growing up with its audience.

But having said that, it has exposed my main problem with the show overall, and why I always enjoy each episode in the moment but never feel compelled to go back and investigate it a second or third time. It's because every god damn character is a trope. That alone isn't a crime - the first season of Lost does exactly the same thing. The key difference for me, though, is that Lost uses the whole "people as tropes" thing as a ruse to disguise its true intentions, which is to analyse and deconstruct those character tropes in a surreal setting. With Stranger Things, the priorities are entirely in surface-level aesthetic experiences and algorithmically generated nostalgia. It means that these tropes just make their way through the story without much analysis on a more intense level, and in some cases it makes the writers look tone deaf - like, I know it's set in 1985 but the way Erica and Sassy Black Hospital Receptionist are written makes it seem like the scripts were pulled from 1985!

None of this makes it a bad show, in fact it doesn't even make it a mediocre one, but realising this has helped me work out why something hasn't quite sat right with me during the second and third seasons. It's good popcorn TV, and frankly more popcorn TV isn't necessarily a bad thing either, but I can't ever see myself returning to these seasons. I'll just keep eating up the new seasons when they turn up, and that'll be that.

Fantastic season that. Massive step up from season 2... Steve / Robin / Erica / Dustin quartet was the highlight, but yeah... Great television

Truth like rain don't give a feck who it falls on.
Girlfriend was watching season 3 and I was listening to it trying to make sense of it but it had no discernable plot that I could work out. One minute there's inter dimensional aliens and spies and a machine that blows you up, then Russians came from nowhere with WW2 Russian parade music, then talk of viruses and hosts and some weird love story in the middle and a creepy Zac Efron wannabe trying to sleep with everyone.

That tends to happen when something is on in the background rather than you actually watching and concentrating on it

Fairly crap with far too many childish love stories, childish moments and unrealistic dialogue given the circumstances. IMO of course.

Mike's hair just angers me, anyone else get that?
Yes!

But I was obnoxious about it because I had to keep pausing it to explain why I don't like him in general. The hair came up a lot and I concluded that they'd somehow transformed a moody Indiana teenager into Amelie.

I thought the third season was fantastic and a big improvement on season two. Introducing the Russians was the kick up the ass it needed in terms of overall plot, and I also liked how they broke up the group for the majority of the season and gave plenty of time to different characters (Steve, Robin, Max, Billy). I always think pacing is such an important part of a good series and this one nailed it i.e. each episode had something interesting to keep you intrigued for the next one and to contribute towards the big finale. The end was also a nice way to cap off what feels like a big journey by this point.
