Well, it's a good thing for the stability of the club here and now. Both Pogba and DDG staying is good for Ole, I think. Losing them would only reinforce the sinking ship narrative surrounding United these days.

That said, I'm not confident that De Gea will remain a top notch keeper when his reflexes start slowing down. He's a fantastic shot stopper but hardly anything special in every other aspect relevant for a keeper.

Who gives a shit about our wage structure? Too many fans try to manage the club rather than support it.
Do you not care about our sustainability? Every major new signing will request that kind of money, every top player renewal will be in that region too. Eventually that will affect the level of player we can bring in. It’s also difficult to move players out when they’re on obscene wages. That’s why I give a shit.

Maybe not this summer, but definitely the next and we would had lost out on a 50m or so transfer fee as well. In a world where Ramsey on a free transfer gets 400k plus bonuses from Juventus, its not a crazy wage at all for a player with one year left on his contract.
This. The wage will also be partly performance related.

Can’t believe people being negative about this. DDG has been our best player for countless of seasons and given his best years to us. One weak season will not change that.

Now we have the GK position fixed and can concentrate our effort to far more weaker spots in the team.

Think everyone be signing thought the part in bold when we gave Sanchez such obscene wages mate. That was a big mistake and set a precedent any half decent players knows we are going to pay massive wages. Totally agree with the second part in bold and that is what i think we are struggling to offload deadwood as no-one is willing to pay the wages to players we are and they are not going to take a reduction to leave mate.

How are people being negative about this? :houllier:
Well, imagine if Dave's 18/19 form is his permanent level now. Imagine having a goalkeeper like that on a 5 year long 350k/w contract, absolute disaster.
There's a good chance that he'll get back to his world class old self, but you should understand why many people are worried about this.

Ignore the unforced errors and the passing arguments, the key issue for DDG is he simply doesn't make as many saves as he used to.

He was consistently saving above 80% (81.2%) of shots until March 2017, this is dropped to less than 70% for 14 months, the whole way through the WC last year and the entire 18/19 season. Resulting in approx 12 more goals conceded.

It is unlikely a new contract will act as a miracle cure, but who knows - a change of mindset and no distractions based on where he might go and form might return, but for me - he peaked at 26 and has declined over a long enough period for it not to be considered a blip.

Give him whatever the hell he wants, we all talk about players getting wages they deserve due to service and performance, I know last season he wasn't at his best but since Fergie has left De gea has been playing teams on his own.

He deserves to get paid whatever he wants.

You don't let a 28 year old with 6 years of back to back world class performances for the club go because of 1 bad season of form, especially when everyone else was having a shit run of form as well. It's crazy to even think about.

Even in this poor run he still managed performances in games that we absolutely would have lost without him, its such a low risk renewal its untrue.

The people "worried", would absolutely be the first ones in line crying and screaming about how shit our club is if we packed him off to Real or PSG and he went on to smash it again.

14 months of bad form, surely it's more unlikely he returns to 2017 levels

Its not just us though: Juve gave Aaron fecking Ramsey the same deal as Sanchez more or less. We need to be aware of that wages will rise as long as the transfer fees do. Its an inevitable consequence and not just down to United overpaying.
And we are going to see more and more players going into free agency as long as clubs keep valuing them as high as they do even if they just have one year left on their contract. What Madrid did with Hazard; paying that much for a player with one year left on his contract was insane and more deals like that and we will see wages skyrocket even more, especially for free agents.

You're right, but it's "damned if you do, damned if you don't" situation to say the least.

Scenario 1: DDG returns to his best form, without contract extension, signs a deal with PSG/Juve/Real and we're losing a 70 million pound asset and long-term servant of the club for nothing. Disaster.
Scenario 2: DDG sign the crazy new contract, retains his 18/19 form, and we're screwed because he'll be impossible to get rid of. Can you bench a goalkeeper earning 350k a week?

I think securing his future at the club might be slightly less risky than the other option, but it's hardly a low risk situation. He was among the worse PL keepers last season, forget about comparing him to the European elite based on 18/19 performances.

Happy he'll stay, in principle, but on that sort of money I just hope this isn't yet another monumental mistake.

Great, the only position where we're the best in the world. And the most important.

Then people will be negative about every signing. There's absolutely no reason why we should think DDG should continue where he left off last season (which was nowhere near as bad as some made out) so this should be celebrated.

Happy he could be signing. Couldn't care less if it's 350K fully deserved it staying with us for so long.

Oh but he is though. A couple of howlers at the end of the season doesn't change that.
That has nothing to do with his howlers. He cannot use his legs, terrible distribution and he has been so underwhelming for Spain too. He has been a great player for Man United but he hes never been the best keeper in the world. Only deluded United fans believe that

But this also needs to relate to the easier chances we give to the opposition.

It is so easy for the opposition to get away good chances from high percentage areas within the 18 yard box due to our poor defensive performances.

De Gea is an incredible shot stopper and his reflexed are world class, but put any goalkeeper behind last years defence and De Gea's stats would be inflated.

is it your money? Does it effect your wages or benefits?
Just look at how much money Alexis is tying up while being useless. That money could be spent on usesful players, doesn't matter if it's my money or not. The more money we tie up on useless players, the less money we can spend on useful ones. Not a hard concept to grasp, is it? You may be happy with the club wasting money, but I'm not. Your point of view is ... very odd, to be diplomatic.

Losing to Comeback Winning!
Is that reported wage true though?

Assuming it's real.
  • Ideal scenario = he deserve by performing godlike as he usually do (did it for about 5 consistent seasons) for upcoming season, so no problem at all, every penny worth.
  • Worst scenario = another consistent nightmare performances. Wonder if he'll get the "greedy" tag and the "Rooney reactions" once this happen. And another Sanchez-like money-related problems where our current and newer players will demand higher and higher wages. Club bowing to players demands financially is a very niiice reputation. Long-term, it'll get worse later seasons.

it's basically what fecking Herrera is getting at PSG. if we have to replace him it will cost north of £50m for anyone half decent. get it done woody.

The way I see it is, I think a lot more players will be running down their contracts as they now if they sign as a free agent they will get astronomical and I think you used Aaron Ramsey as a perfect example of this mate.

Don't give a feck what he is paid, our best player has every right to be our highest paid player.

Fantastic news. I was appalled by how quickly many on this site turned on him after a couple of rough games.

We did actually lose the one shoot-out he was involved in.. Moyes season vs Sunderland.. He also made the mistake that caused the shoot-out, 10 seconds away from the final in extra time :houllier:.. I hope he returns to his former self that's all I can say atm..
