Is it me or everyone is overrating Lingard's movement?

Both Liverpool fullbacks will assist/score more than Lingard for the 2nd year running next season

His movement is a bit like Fellaini's workrate. Since neither have much in the way of appreciable qualities, their few positives tend to be overstated. With Lingard, it's his "world-class movement", with Fellaini it was his workrate and "always giving a 100%" and "always doing what the manager asks to", despite his regular failings to track runners from midfield, for example.

Still to early in his career to see what type of threat he might pose in the furture.

Here he is in 30 years time though with his latest instgram haircut selfie.

how dare you ignore the FACT that Fellaini was the GOAT of chest control

Lingard is our hardest working player, if the rest of the team worked as hard as Lingard on the pitch, our results would be better.

Hardwork you say? This is why we still hold on to dross like Young for instance and constantly bash our most productive player(Pogba). He doesn't appear to work hard enough.

I like Lingard. He works his ass off in pressing and that is a massive boon to the team, and his technique is actually a bit underrated IMO. But his decision making sometimes lets him down. Like even in the game against Perth, his shot on target. He cleanly recovers the ball through excellent pressing, dribbles past two Glory players and then, with Martial and someone else (Shaw maybe?) completely unmarked in the box before him, he instead decides to take a shot from the edge of the box. I appreciate the ambition, but I was screaming for him to pass the ball to Martial who was in a prime position to score. I think it's that decision making that lets him down the most often. He's not a playmaker, but he often takes up the same positions as a playmaker does - he's better getting to the end of moves or with supplying the second-to-last pass before a shot on goal. It is difficult to find the best position and role for him because of these qualities he has as a player.

Jesse Lingard is a better player than we all think. He'll be very useful this season.
He was useful when getting us 6th place last season.
He was also useful when we lost to Cardiff and drew with Huddersfield.
So, you are right - he shall continue to be useful this season, as he was last.

Am I the only person who thinks he is just a solid squad option? Calling him Mesi Lingod or creating threads like this when it is clear that he posseses good off the ball movement just proves how divided the CAF about him really is.

Obviously not, I’d say the majority of us think he’s a squad player at best. In that role he’s definitely good enough, as a starter he’s a liability.

He's a good squad option to have around and can put in some quality performances when he's on song. He's comparable to Park during his first 1-2 seasons where he couldn't be relied upon consistently and was mainly a bench option or coming into the squad to rotate or to do a specific job. Obviously Park kicked on from that, and was much more effective towards the end of his spell at United and a very good player in European games.

The problem with Lingard is he's probably our best RW at the min therefore he will get a lot of minutes playing in that role. Ideally we sign a proper RW and Lingard goes to a squad option for RW and #10/SS.

His runs are actually really good - he probably has the best runs in our squad

The problem is a) that the majority of ourplayers aren't capable of picking a pass to match his runs (Pogba one of few exceptions) and b) he lacks the quality of the ball to truly benefit from it

I don't think so. Lingards movement off the ball is really good and causes problems for the opposition, unfortunately it all goes south when he's on the ball. His foot is shaped like a 50p! You can never be sure where the ball is going to fly.

‘Movement’ should be a pre requisite for EVERY footballer on the planet. It really isn’t a difficult attribute or something we should be in awe of that a footballer has great movement.

I’d be more concerned about his ability to find a team mate ten yards away and the way he often just drifts through matches showing nothing on the ball at all.
When many of the worlds great coaches/players like Michels/Beckenbauer/Cruyff talked about the extreme importance of movement in football, they weren’t talking about the ability to move or not. They were talking about intelligence and initiative to create without having the ball. Good movement is movement that creates space in tight places, and imbalances in the opposition.

Rashford has a lot of initiative in his running even if he still has a lot to learn about intelligent running, and when you see Martial, you see how that is important as well. Van Nistlerooy didn’t make as many runs as Rashford, but his runs were so intelligent that smart and experienced players like Beckham, Solskjær and Giggs would have no option but to put him through on goal.

Lingard is very good at creating space with off the ball movement. Southgate and Pochettino loves this, so Kane, Alli and Lingard will play even when out of form (on the ball) and in front of sometimes more technical players. It is dependent on teammates, though. Young Ronaldo couldn’t detect the ideas behind Van Nistlerooys runs, and left them ineffective. Against Perth, second half saw a team able to play quick-pass-n-move in tight places without becoming disjointed, with Mata, Pogba, Gomes, Rashford all good at this. In the first half, the whole play was more disjointed because Perth were sharper and tighter at removing space, but also because James, Chong, Pereira, Martial are not natural foils for each other playing this kind of football, and that makes Lingards movements less effectual and look more chaotic. iMO.

Lingard - inconsistent quality of movements, more bad than good.

Lingod - amazing movements. Purple patch?
(Unfortunately only lasts for the duration from only one game to the rare 2-3 months only.)

Not a Lingard fan at all. Poor passing, poor dribbling, unable to tackle, average pace for a winger. Much of the time he completely disappears from the game.
He does press well at times, takes up useful positions in attacks, can finish well at times. Not good enough as Utd regular.

Compare Lingard to Jadon Sancho, Raheem Sterling, Dele Alli or Eric Dier... They are all vastly, vastly better in almost every way in my estimation. He really just doesn't seem to give it his all when he's out there. I don't really doubt his ability so much as his mentality, true commitment and work-rate. It feels like he doesn't have anything to fight for when he's on the pitch, as though he's already reached the peak as an individual so doesn't care about anything else. I believe there should be at least some rumblings of him being sold, at least as a threat so he'll pull his socks up.

Agreed, we should sell him 150m+ to Real Madrid, Lingard needs to play with much better players around him, it will unblock him.

Who in the squad would you all rather play RW at the moment? We should have at least loaned a young RW from abroad. Pretty crazy and isn’t going to make AWB’s life easier

He was good for LVG & Mourinho. Scored in the big games. Played well in the WC. Has been gash ever since.

I'd rotate Greenwood, James and Dalot and see what happens. No more of the J "beans" Lingz/Mata torture, would play Chong too before them out wide.

At the moment I'd probably just play a lopsided 4-3-3 with Pogba and Pereira (sort of a Rakitic type role shuttling on the right as he works his tail off and can at least hit crosses and longer shots from there) ahead of McTominay in midfield, James out wide left and Rashford up top with Martial and Greenwood fighting it out to partner him, make Wan-Bissaka cover 60 yards on his own the poor bastard:

----------Martial---Rashford
James----------------------------------
-------------Pogba------Pereira---------
-------------McTominay-----------AWB
---Shaw--Maguire-Lindelof-----------
----------------DeGea-----------------

5th place, IMO. Not as good as we were under Ole at first, or as bad as we ended the season, just good old fashioned regression to the mean. The back 4 (and the DM) are talented and young so end the season better than they start it but obviously the attack is callow and lacking in genius or an ability to keep the ball so we don't get 4th.

I would like to see that happen, yes but the working in of Greenwood would take time. It also seems Ole loves Lingard and if it’s a 4-3-3 that’s the best spot for him. I do think Dalot will play there and same with Greenwood, but they’ll start off subbing in or playing lower cup games.

I would prefer Fred and Mctominay in a double pivot and Pogba on top of them
Front three of James, Martial and Rashford.

Sometime last season, I was distraught when he got injured because it felt like was one of our more consistent attacking players. I am less distraught now based on how he ended the season. But maybe he just played on while still carrying an injury.

Sure. It seems unlikely to me that Fred and Pereira (or Mctominay) will start wire to wire anyways. None of them seem good enough to just be penciled in as starting 45 times this year and no-brainer names on the teamsheet when healthy, regardless of opponent. I'd say that only applies to Pogba, De Gea, Rashford, Shaw, Wan-Bissaka and maybe Lindelof. The other 5 spots (maybe 3 or 4 if we buy good players and they're immediately an upgrade) are going to be battled for throughout the season anyways, and not because we have Mahrez and Sane pushing the starters but because we have Delphs, Danilos and Zinchenkos (hopefully for that last one!) but without the clear and brilliant style that accentuates the strengths and hides their weaknesses of most of those guys (Danilo would probably be better off away from Pep I'd guess).

Would have been great if we still had Januzaj, I feel he would have been better on that right side of attack than Lingard. Sadly we ll still have to put up with Jesse and hope he does have a good season.
