Im not so sure. There is a lot of fluctuation in the scores. But one things for sure he cant fall any further behind. If he finishes within 5 or 6 shots of the lead at the end of today he would probably be happy enough given how he started.
He’ll be fine if he gets to +2. Conditions will be worse later on today with the rough being wet. Just needs to focus on damage limitation today. +2 today and get back to -2 or something tomorrow and he’ll be in a good position.

A triple to finish and +8 for Rory in the opening round. That was always going to happen.

This is a proper Open, not had one in a while due to good weather. Wind with a bit of rain is perfect golf to watch. This course is also fantastic.

Yeah, this is way better than them all scoring -9 under and stuff, those courses are stupid and make the average golfer feel even worse about their own game. Loads of pros will be fuming after this but it's proper golf

The Brooks machine moves on. Tied for the lead at -4 thru 14.

Kopeka at majors is like one of those cheats you unlocked on old video games.

Please elaborate... I’ve never been a fan but that’s purely because he’s never been as good as he was hyped to be. Basically, he isn’t an alpha like Tiger and now Brooks.

It's amazing how consistently brilliant he is at the majors but doesn't have a whole lot of wins outside of them.
Doesn’t care about them. History doesn’t remember PGA tour wins unless you’re Tiger and get to 50+.

Anyone over for this? I have tickets for tomorrow and Saturday and was up in the Port today. Weather is changeable but warm and balmy. I was talking to Darren Clarke last week and was well chuffed for him to tee off, he’s the only NI golfer I have time for. Have to say Royal Portrush has done us proud.

Yeah he’s defo done now, I wrote that at 3 over but he’s fecked it
He has talent no doubt but has let the whole “boy wonder” thing get to his head. He has a lot of time left to come back and I think he will but needs to take it more seriously. I get it must be hard to motivate yourself when he is already a made man. He is set for life no mater what, but I hope when he matures he will realise what a legacy he could leave. He just sounds stupid when he says how much an Open at Portrush means to him and then plays the first hole how he did.

Going up on the Sunday. Looking forward to it, but was going McIlroy would still be in contention then. Oh well, should be good anyway.

3 birdies from the first three holes for Lowry. Would love him to win this from here.

Not being funny, but doesn't anyone find McIlroy to be massively over-hyped?

He's not won a major for 5 years, but he's constantly touted as a favourite in every major he plays in .
He’s always been overhyped. Golf was desperate for a new poster boy when Tiger was going through his struggles. Rory took advantage of a period when Tiger was out and won some majors on soft courses with easy conditions. He’s a great player don’t get me wrong but he bought into the hype that he was the next Tiger. As soon as Spieth came along in 15 he’s looked pretty lost. You hate to see it.

I've never got the Rory hype either. He seems really weak mentally. When the pressure is on it gets to him. Still, gotta feel for him yesterday.

I swear I jinx him, every time I watch him play he is garbage and when I’m not watching him I always hear how great he’s doing. I watched most of yesterday and he bombed then today I was too busy to watch any of it but just turned it on in the last few holes here and there to watch him mess up again in those few shots. I must start betting accordingly for when I’m watching him or not

Great to see Bob McIntyre call out Kyle Stanley for not calling “Fore”. Stanley had already hit a steward and then didn’t call Fore as a ball hit McIntyre’s caddie’s mum.

Now it’s crazy that that’s who the ball hit and maybe that’s the only reason McIntyre reacted, but this habit some players have, particularly Americans, of not calling Fore is ridiculous. They’re hoping for a fecking bounce off the crowd that means their ball doesn’t end up in the shite. Like imagine thinking that it’s better that this ball cracks off someone’s head than my ball ending up in the deep rough.

Anyway, delighted it’s been highlighted. A woman lost her sight at the Ryder Cup due to a golf ball in the face, calling Fore when your ball is heading towards the crowd should be mandatory, not etiquette.

Should be a DQ for not shouting Fore in my opinion. Disgraceful to not do it. Players won't change either unless its a huge penalty. It's improved in recent years though.

Well pretty sure it will depend on how far you were from the place it was hit and speed it was traveling at . If hit flush from a short distance it can be pretty nasty

The whole tee was screaming fore on that one to be fair.
