I saw that Daniel Maldini made his AC Milan debut recently continuing the family trend after his father and grandfather. This got me thinking, are there any other examples of 3 generations of family playing for the same club?

I’m struggling to think of 3 generations of pro footballers alone, let alone playing for the same club!

A quick google doesn’t make it sound like there’s been any who’s played for the same club. Unless you’re going to delve deep into smaller leagues or footballing clubs from other continents.

In Slovakia we have Weiss family (not so comparable to Maldini's dynasty), grandfather Vladimir (all 3 first name is same :D) played some matches for Czechoslovakia, his son also played for Czechoslovakia, in WC 1990, then later he was slovak national coach, now Georgian national team coach. His son Vladimir is still playing, played on WC 2010 and EURO 2016 with goal against russia. Now he is playing Qatari shity league, used to be in City academy.

Alonsos I think but Marcos didn't play for RM (probably only some youth setups there?) whereas I think his pops and grandpa did.

Come to think about it I remember his grandpa did, not sure about father.

[Irrelevant point] is a 3rd generation player. Grandad at Real, Father are Atleti and Barca so they breach the club rule professionally though Marcos and his Grandad played senior football for Real while his Father was a youth team player without senior appearanecs. All played for Spain too.

Exceptional player (Paulo), Versatile in that he could play across the back 4 comfortably and read the game better than almost anyone...

Imagine the pressure that kid is under as the son of arguably the greatest defender in the game and playing at the same club he spent his entire career. Not just living up to his dad's legacy, but in front of the very fans that adored him for two decades.

There is also Finn, Michael and Mads Laudrup. They don't have quite as strong a connection to any club as the Maldini's do with Milan, but they did all represent KB.

Michael and Brian Laudrup's father played a bit for the Danish national team before them. Michael's sons, Mads and Andreas, only ever made it to the U19 and U21 squads, respectively.

Big boots to fill, not only with the single club connection but also how good the other two were. Dad needs no introduction but Granddad was a world class defender too.

Piracy on the High Seas.
Erwin Seeler, Uwe Seeler (Erwin's son) and Levin Öztunalı (Uwe's grandson) played for Hamburg at various levels (including the youth team) from 1938 to 2013, with Uwe being the undisputed “greatest player” in club history. Pretty sure Forlán and Chicharito's families are quite heavily involved with the Uruguayan and Mexican national team(s) as well.

Behind the right goal post as "Whiteside shoots!"
Family links.

Bobby and Jack Charlton won the World Cup with England in 1966 and already had family with huge traditions in football.

Their mum was the cousin of legendary Newcastle United striker Jackie Milburn, while their uncles George, Jimmy, Stanley and John were also professional footballers.

That's some football gene pool.

Djimi Traore of Liverpool fame is the father of Adama Traore and Lacina Traore. Also he is married to the sister of Ricardo Queresma so that is quite a talented family!

Teddy Sheringham’s son Charlie Sheringham has played across the football league. Once playing in the same game as Teddy Sheringham. But what makes it even more incredible is Teddy's other son Martin Sheringham works for Walsall on the ticketing office!

Why is he called Daniel and not Daniele?
Perhaps thinking to much in it. You can still easily say Daniel in an Italian accent (Danieelllll - no offense to any Italians!!) just like you can do Daniele. Just like you can spell Lily, Lilly, Lyli different and sound the same.

Back on topic though. Mad that 3 generations have made a senior debut, and he's only 17 years old too. I seriously need to steal some of those Maldini genes for my next kid as mine can't play for squat.

Rivaldo and his dad did the same - playing in the same game.

But this isn't in the same class as 3 generations playing for AC Milan. And assuming Maldini's sons will be producing offspring in a 10 years or so, then you could have a whole squad of Maldini's in 30 years time.

Not even related, unless he was shagging at 9/10 years old he couldn’t be Lacina dad anyway

In Iceland we have the Gudjohnsen’s.

Obviously not Maldini level but 3 generations at a decent level.
Arnòr Gudjohnsen had a bit of a journeyman carrier across Europe. Highlights being his stints with Bordeaux and Anderlecht(lost the UEFA cup final against spurs in 84).
Eiður Guðjohnsen made his international debut subbing in for his dad and in his carrier won the premier league and CL, his younger brother is currently in the Swansea youth team. Eiður has two sons playing for Real Madrid youth team and one in serie B.

Don’t think any family will ever get close to the Maldinis

No, he isnt. Djimi isnt Adame and Lacina's father because it would make him 10 when he was had them.

The Mihaylov family in Bulgaria. All three - grandad Biser, son Borislav and grandson Nikolay were /is goalkeepers of Levski and the national team. Borislav Mihaylov is now the president of the Bulgarian Football Union.

Its no surprise. After AC won the CL in 07 there was a video from their celebrations where he was about 6 years old and he did a perfectly timed slide tackle on Clarence Seedorf

Can’t imagine a better footballing father to have when growing up as influence and a target to reach. On the flip side must be a hell of a pressure when you have to live up too all the same.

Setting his son up for failure he is, imagine if he was called Paul!

Wonder how much genes have to do with. Would he make his children live and breathe football from the moment they are born?

Reckon it's more genes / talent and determination than anything - parents can push but you get nowhere without that. Becks has 3 boys and none of them made it even though, might be wrong, they trained with PSG and Milan when they were younger.

ps. Paul Maldini just sounds so wrong

You couldn't hand pick a worse/tougher lineal legacy to be following. Would be interesting to hear the boy's opinions of it all because there's no way it's not been brought to his attention from outsiders even if his father remains schtum.

If he turns out to be world class like his pops and grandpops, the Maldini strain needs to be studied by scientists... if he turns out to be an all-timer like his dad, it's probably time to assume they are aliens.

Does that really make it more incredible ?

As did Brian Laudrup, though only later in his career with FC Copenhagen.

And both Brian's Nicolai, Michael's other son Andreas played for Lyngby.
