It's annoying that he's one of about 5 players that are so obviously not good enough and need shipping out, yet we seem to want to rectify this issue by playing them for 90 minutes every week. Even if there's no takers, just don't play them.

So our other option is Fred....eeeek. So Longstaff is still off then?

He's looked the same since about 2 months after we signed him. Was equally shite at Chelsea in that last season. Said it at the time but such a dumb signing. Replaced our POTS with an inferior, older player and that led to Herrera deciding to leave on a free while Matic is there barely moving.
While Fabinho was desperate to come here.

He is so terrible, not a single player has been able to make a good partnership with him. Every player that partners him, seems to suffer because of his shitness.

Absolutely appalling, all pre season MUTV has banged on about the solid pro's....Matic, Mata, Young...being so important, theyr all useless. Mata mayswel not have played yday, Everyone wishes Matic hadnt played and Young booted it out for a goal kick with his first touch. If they were Family pets theyd be put down to save them from further suffering, we give them new deals, laughable.

Inzammam Al Haq would have been quicker than Matic.
 didn't think i'd ever read that on a footy forum. Glad i did. Atleast with Inzi, you know he would perform. Matic can't run and on top of that his performances all round are non existant it seems

Yet more proof that DM will be our undoing this season.
I have stated this many times on here that he is one of the biggest reason that we conseeded 60 goals last season. We can change our CB but while he stays here we will have the same problems. Plus his passing range is so limited he cant be in a two man midfield as the passer will need to do most of his work while dictating play.

Agreed. I would look to offload him now. We play with two CMs, and all the other options are better than him.

Just go watch him for the first goal against Milan and you won't sleep well for a week. Dude just knocked the ball in front of him like he was going to escape pressure and lost a foot race to give the ball away just outside his own box.

Between him, Mata, Young and Fred, it could be a long season unless reinforcements arrive.

He’s finished. Can’t have a passenger in such an important position, we’re in trouble if we persist with him. He will get overrun against any half decent side.

We can say goodbye to fourth if the Serbian Snail is shielding our defense. It's beyond a joke now how much of a liability he is. Not sure how Ole and the coaching staff can't see this. It's crazy how we seem to have only targetted Longstaff to replace him.

It was more than obvious he needed replacing and to be let go in the process.
I'm still sure this was the most important position, along with getting a right back, that we needed to address.

Is there no player around we can get in a hurry? Otherwise what we gonna do? Play Phil Jones there?

We have Pogba, McTominay and Fred who should all be in front of him in the pecking order, whether we play a 2-man or 3-man midfield. And I'm not Fred's biggest fan but at least he is a few times more mobile than Matic.

No Ander to do half his job for him. All he has to offer is an occasional nice pass, an occasional tackle and size

The only games I want to see him play this season are cup matches where we field a lot of young players and he can be used to add a bit of experience.

He's been getting destroyed in PL games for about 18 months now and based on pre-season there is no reason to expect anything different this year.

Longstaff may not be the one yet. We need experience and mobility in this area.
Anybody would be an upgrade.

I’d genuinely take midfielders from relegated teams over Matic right now.

I feel like he gets in the team because of his “experience” rather than being a good player.

It’s almost like we value him being a good professional and a wise head over being an actually good footballer.

I have faith though that pogba/mctominay will be the first choice pair.

He is done at UTD level, PL and any top league level for that matter too. McT should be the first option, Fred second. Do we have any academy prospect for this position?

Hope so because now that the defense is sorted he's the glaring weakness in our team. I don't think he'll be a prominent player this season but I could still see him playing quite a few games which worries me.

Pogba is Ok there but he likes to roam, and McTominay cannot do it on his own. We need a specialist DM player for this area.

Shambles of a player. Can’t receive a simple pass without taking 5 years about it, can’t press, and doesn’t actually close the opposition down when they get somewhere near our penalty area.

He’s literally useless at every basic criteria needed from a DM.

We have Garner who is not ready yet. McTominay is not ready either, we need a player who has played this position for some time.

It's like watching something in slow motion, it's brutal. Makes it worse that he doesn't fit the style Ole wants to play, which makes it even more confusing why he keeps getting picked to play.

Will Matic be booed if he plays, like Fellaini and Young have been?
Management needs to get the message if he's played. It's suicide to persist with him.

Though I don't think booing would be good. Suggest we get the white hankies out ala Madrid fans. Far more civilised way of showing your discontent...:D

I went to the game last night in Cardiff. I spent time keeping an eye on Matic. He is abysmal. Absolute liability. I would be of more use than him simply by default because I can run relatively quickly.

As a member of the Matic is crap society have to say until the blunder he was actually playing pretty well and was trying out some adventurous passes and doing some decent defensive covering when Rojo went wondering and Lindelof regressed to what he was in his first season here.

However DeGea deserves some of the blame for that first goal. What he was thinking giving that ball to Matic when Matic is facing his own goal and is flanked by 2 Milan players i’ll Never know. Stupid decision then Matic panics and is out paced by two players.

Mata later plays him in to a terrible position where he has no chance either so he is dispossessed again. There was one that was all his own doing where he just seemed oblivious to the guy behind him and took an age to make a pass. He needs upgrading on soon or for McT or Fred to pull one out the bag this year but if not then next summers shopping list priority should be a DM.

A box to box alongside a DM player, with Pogba or Fernandes roaming in front. But the DM has to be a specialist in this area.

I'd say that McT looks ready. He makes his odd mistake here and there, but if we are playing with Pogba and Slabhead, he will have team mates who will help him share some burden of escaping the press and playing from the back. To be honest, I'd take Garner over Matic in current state. I do agree with you in general though, would be a good thing to have a proper defensive midfielder.

Don't give a toss about pre-season form for the more experienced players.. He'll come good once the season really starts. Needs time on the ball and legs beside him, though..
