People absolutely convinced themselves he was special too. So odd.

I don't understand how people are coming to the conclusion he wasn't very good anyway.

He scored 32 goals in all competitions last season from midfield. We scored about 30 goals less than City in the Prem in 18/19. He was exactly what we needed and only 24 years old so a good long term investment.

We could have had Pogba and Fernandes in the middle with McTominay behind them. Sigh, what a anti-climatic way to end the transfer window.

Indeed. We needed him and the board didn't do the deal and the vicious cycle continues with not achieving stuff, sacking manager, hiring new manager, build expectations and then destroy them.

I didn't think he was that good in the first place. He's a #10 that has a good long shot. Not what we need at all.

The we "needed" him seem to come from people who just cite his goals and not where he actually played.

Heard a few interviews with Portuguese journos recently who all said that he was a good player in a poor team and whose stats were padded by the fact that his colleagues were always trying to put him in possession when possible so he was getting the best chances to score or assist. He was rated as a starter in a mid table team if he came to PL.

Brilliant post! Who knows how good Bruno Fernandes would have been or might yet be in a top Premier League team; but one thing that is beyond dispute is that he has been massively over-exposed. Partly by the Portuguese media and partly by his influential fan-boys on YouTube, Fernandes has been subject to perfectly justifiable media interest but a victim of totally unjustifiable media hype. Of course 30 league goals is an impressive tally, but 30 goals in Portugal is not the same as in Italy, Spain or England.

An attacking midfielder with lots of goals and assists who didn't repeat it for United. Now where have I heard that one before?

I’ve wasted so much time expecting this lad to join. I would love to find out the truth behind it all some time soon. Imagine all the time we have all wasted if we never even contemplated a bid for him!?

May still move this window to a continental club. Mendes’ agency handling him now so I’d make someone like Monaco favourite for a “mates rates” fee.

But then again, I don't understand our fans frustrations at the window. We've done well. Not brilliant, but definitely above satisfactory.
When we are floundering later this season, I will remind you of your statement and ask you if we have done well, or not.
We have 1 midfielder of quality...that's it.
How on Earth does anybody expect Pogba to run midfield on his own?
If Pogba gets injured or is in bad form, we are completely screwed.
Furthermore, given that our top scoring stirker has been sold, where are the goals coming from?

Too many people have forgotten that this team (minus Bissaka and Maguire), were in relegation form after the PSG match.
IMO, at best, we are as good as last year. At worst, we are worse than last season.

This guy practically said it was a done deal.

Every year I tell myself not to pay any attention to the rumors/'experts' and like close work, every year a do. I really wanted this deal to happen :(

With no new dcm and creative cm.

I think Ole and United coaching staff will trust on McTom that will step up as really good dcm this season.
And they consider they will go for Longstaff. The Carrick similar one of a cm. If Longstaff impress them until January. Then i think they will go for Longstaff in January.

And about this guy Bruno. No bid from United. He hasn’t convinced them enough. Due to the price. They are not 100% sure if he is the ideal cm or nr.10.

Ole want Dybala. But it took a bit time. Then not much time to others nr.10 target. Then teams will know you are desperate and price rise would be high. Not much time after Dybala negotiation ended with too high wage.

So it was clearly Ole and United want a new nr.10. Dybala was playing as a nr.10. A replacement for Lukaku. Linked with Eriksen after that. Another nr.10. Instead of a new striker. Ole want a new supporting striker, a new cam.

Too many cam/nr.10 to choose from? :D

First linked with Maddison, Bruno, Savic, Dybala and Eriksen.

Ole definitive want a new nr.10...too support/assist and create chances for Rashford, still can score goals too. And Bruno does fit the bill. Same as Dybala, Eriksen, Savic and Maddison. All 5 are really good nr.10 options.

But a deeper creative cm might be Longstaff.

Longstaff + Nr.10

I think that's it in a nutshell.
Bruno was mentioned as far back as March, and we know that he was scouted extensively.
I just think that United thought that they could get him on the cheap, mistakenly thinking his release clause was £35m, and perhaps Joao Felix being transferred for more than £100m has made Sporting determined to get a much higher valuation for their player.
Good case study for the benefits of getting business done early.

He will end up at Wolves next summer and play really well and will be worth 85m the following season and that's when we'll be trying to buy him when he's 26 and 85m. Hmmm.... sounds like a wee bit similar.... I wonder who did we buy for 85m at the age of 26 when we could have gotten him cheaper a season or two prior to that for 60m instead.

I’m not sure most posters genuinely wanted him, we were all just crying out for at least one midfield signing to replace Herrera and Fellaini. The two main names being linked to us throughout the window were Fernandes and Longstaff. I think Longstaff is definitely on the shortlist as a Matic replacement.

Perhaps the staff really see something in Fred that we don’t. They do see him in training everyday after all but personally I’m not convinced. Too inconsistent with the basics of a midfielder. Oh well!

Ole said that he was expecting one or two more signings after Macguire.

So he doesn't have much of a choice now that Woodward made the decisions for him but to be 'happy' with his squad and to 'trust' the players like McTom or Fred.

Tielemens went to Leicester for 35m.... Let that sink in.... If we couldn't afford Bruno, I'm sure Tielemens was more than available and he was hoping to join us.

To be fair to Shinji, he was settling in somewhat near the end of SAF's reign, think he would have made it if SAF had stayed. Everyone basically lost any ability to play football under Moyes bar Januzaj.
When has Mata ever played the role is was great at? Quite unfair on them too but I see your point too.

I was seriously muppeting for Tielemens. Honestly, forgot about the link to Tielemens before he went to LCFC. And they signed two midfielders. TWO!

Was never quite sure about Fernandes. Was okay with Longstaff but not for £50m.

Really shows how incompetent and clueless we are as a club. Perhaps our scouts are only tasked with looking for youth prospects and first team signings are only based on the manager’s list.

Di Marzio has been treated like a transfer oracle over here in the past couple of years, but seriously, how many times has he been wrong?

United weren't in for him for whatever reason, I believe that is clear. He enjoyed his loan at Leicester, was guaranteed playing time and felt comfortable with Rodgers. Fine. Nothing to get your panties in a bunch.

Definitely not just a case of Di Marzio being led by the nose by an agent(s)
