The chances of him having an amazing season are almost none, considering that never happened so far in his career and he's going to be 27 this year.

The team's best hope is that he replicates his only good run of form that lasted less than 2 months about 2 years ago. Since then, he scored about 6 goals in all competitions.

He looked actually quite good in pre-season. Quick on the turn and driving forward with the ball. If he plays through the middle and is in and around the edge of the d, I expect him to be a big threat.

I’m going to say he’s going to score 15+ goals for us this season and surprise us all.

Trying my hand at being positive. ;)
If he scores 15 goals in the league ill send you €50 in the post.

He is an absolutely perfect player for a pressing attack.

He will play in the majority of the games as he is our best attacker at doing what this system needs doing off the ball. He does not allow the opposition time on the ball; he refuses to let the big teams play out from the back (it's why LvG/Mourinho and Ole ALWAYS plays him in the big games).

Jesse is more pivotal to our final third play than any other player at the club.

Yes, Martial and Rashford are expected to be more clinical and will get the plaudits based on scoring.

But Jesse's input is much more pivotal and we - under this Ole press - are a weaker team without him in it.

It doesn't matter.

He will play.

He will perform exactly how Ole asks him to perform.

Ole will be super pleased with his display.

Fans on the Caf still won't understand it and will say he played shit.

Repeat. Repeat. Repeat.

This is a certainty.

It's not what he does without the ball it's what he does with it that makes people wonder how he is still starting games for us. His numbers are a joke for the position he plays in.

I hope he has a fantastic season as I do all our players.

His movement and one touch play I think is exceptional as he knits plays together. He gives our attacking talents more time on the ball.

In my opinion he divides opinion very much like Hargeaves did in the sense that not many appreciate the things he does and the worth that he brings to our current system of play /team.

He is not world class but then very few players are. Replacing him with such a player does not guarantee any more success as we know from past experience.

Can see him being in with a shout of winning YPOTY, the way he’s developed at such a consistent rate over the last 8 seasons, I think he’s ready for a break out season and to show real maturity.

I find him frustrating.

But I think he will have a good season. He's really suited to Ole's style. I expect him to play centrally a lot. Rom is gone. Pogba will play deeper due to our lack of CMs. He has a huge opportunity

Well, with all due respect, that is a stupid way to judge a player.

Any one player - no matter who they are - only has the ball at his feet for 2% of any game.

Fans judging what a player does based solely on that 2% alone are missing the essence of team sport.. especially this sport.

Why on earth would you only base a player's performance on 2%? When in fact the other 98% is way more important. Discipline (and I mean this in terms of carrying out manager's orders) is the most important attribute any player at the top level can have. Yes, some of those orders come in the realm of that 2%, such as decision-making on the ball, but most managerial orders and indeed most discipline is done in the other 98%.

The unfortunate thing is; most fans don't pay one iota of attention to the 98%; they are only interested in what a player does during the 2% of the time he has the ball at his feet.

When fans were playing junior football as a kid, their coaches were only concerned about how they kicked a ball; could they pass the ball, shoot....

And now they can only relate their football knowledge to what they learned when they were 12-years old. They only judge players on what they do on the ball.

But that is not how professional football works.

Wanna know why Jesse Lingard is highly regarded by the likes of Sir Alex Ferguson, Louis van Gaal, Jose Mourinho, Ole Solskjaer and Gareth Southgate? Because his 98% is top-quality! They know they can trust him implicitly to carry out their orders. And wanna know why he is disregarded by football fans on internet forums? It's simple: they don't understand the 98%.

He didn't specify "in the league", but I agree. Considering he has 17 in his entire Manchester United career, the chances of him nearly doubling his tally are minute to put it mildly.
But crazier things have happened before. Leicester winning the league for example

What a load of shit
I'm now convinced Lingard apologists are flat earthers of the footballing world. No amount of evidence will change their minds, so it's pointless to even argue

Don’t know how the media class him as a “young player” when he is closer to turning 30 than 21. Then again, probably it’s because the guy acts more like his shoe size than his age.

Yep; you're right.

Sir Alex
Van Gaal
Jose
Ole
Southgate

You're all wrong to play Jesse in all the big matches, because 'John Johnson' off of RedCafe thinks he is shite. So you guys mustn't have a clue...

To certain extent he is similar to Park Ji Sung, a good workhorse, but never good enough to be main threat. Remember when Park is playing, he is there to support Rooney, Ronaldo, Giggs, Berbatov....
If Lingard was even a quarter of the player Ji Sung was, then this thread wouldn't exist in the first place. Lingard will always be....Lingard. Scores an amazing goal in one match and then becomes totally inconsequential in the next 10. A nothing player. Garbage, average and should be playing for the likes of Stoke and Watford were he not to be a local lad.

I really don't understand what Ole sees in him that makes him think he'll suddenly step up and start scoring on regular basis.
See the quote below, not all of football is scoring - Jesse does a lot more than people give him credit for. it is easy to follow the herd and hate on him, and to be fair he seems quite a dick off the pitch, but he will be one of the best players you have for Ole’s style of pressing.

He is a valuable squad player and his qualities lead well in the press....but he shouldnt be a regular first team starter at a club the size of ours, could label this at half the side though.

I dont like the "he should play he had a good preseason".....do people forget every year some of the great preseason performances, especially from youngsters (which of course he isnt). Preseason is absolutely irrelevant as to how players will perform over a season. more relevant if its a tiring tour, they havent had a break or they havent go a preseason in to build the fitness

Ah the old running and clever movement does not cut it anymore for Jlingz, so this 27 year old kid improved and now is pivotal and best from our front 3, at pressing? Now that should excite everyone.

I really like the way you analysed this because the off the ball intelligence is sometimes not fully appreciated.

I can understand that we would like a little more magic dust and maybe if we want to win the PL in future this is one position we might need to invest in.

Alternatively you could argue that Liverpool have that with a player like Shaqiri but he doesn't start because he does not play the off the ball game very well.

I do know he'll run his socks off and all that, make smart runs off the ball, drag defenders out of position, but for a player playing in that position for United he simply has to have much better numbers in term of scoring and assisting.

It appears that he calmed down his social media activity since beggining of the summer which goes with reports that Ole had a word with him about it. Also, Ole mentioned several times he expects bigger output in terms of goals from him, which could mean that for all his smart press he'll face bench if there won't be goals and assist alongside all that running he does.

Really hope he does. He will most likely be first choice as our 10, so he really needs to step up now. He is one of most experienced players.

People saying he shouldn't be anything more than a squad option, who exactly will you play all season? We have very few attackers this season.

So I really do hope that he'll step up and contribute more goals and assists. We need it.

This is absolute bs. Players press and work off the ball , Liverpool and City players press the ball make runs of the ball - the difference is those players can also play football and have skills and talents to do something with the ball when they've got it . It's pointless pressing a player and gaining possession if he has not got the ability to use it when he's got.

Lingard is easily by far the worst player United have ever had who has started more than 100 games and it's not even close.
SAF never picked him, LVG and Mourinho got sacked and Southgate had an easy run in the WC. If Ole puts faith in him he's going to be gone too.
Just think I've been watching United for 56 years and I never realised that running round like a headless chicken with no talent was essential to being a Man Utd player. What a pathetic joke.

"The 98%"

There is only so much you can do with high workrate and good movement. An attacking player with poor "2%" is next to useless.

Why then doesn’t Klopp’s press or Poch’s press or Pep’s press have such a useless creator in their attack? And how do they manage to press so well when their attackers all contribute goals/assists also?

What an absolute pile of shit excuse for a below average player with above average running skills.

He's 26 going on 27 ffs! He's not a kid anymore! aye

I hope he does well, he'd prove a lot of people wrong about him if he shows he can contribute across a season, not just in the odd game or purple patch.
I think his op was tongue in cheek comment.

He'll do what many a United player does, and be poor to average in almost every game, do something good, then the most annoying posters on the caf will crawl out of the woodwork and say "told you so".

Angel Gomes did everything this preseason, which Lingard is praised for, whilst also having the extra quality on the ball, passing ability and threat.

If he scores 3 goals this season I'll be surprised.

The farce is about his pressing ability and imaginary good movement.
He can't tackle, he has 25 yellow cards and 15 assists in his United career.

His movement is hugely overated too, actually follow his movement around the pitch, either he clogs up the space for other players or he conveniently places an opponent player between him and the United player in possession. Why would a defender follow his run, chances are he wouldn't do anything if he received the ball.

Hopefully Ole realises early enough that Lingard is not the way forward.

I should become a professional footballer then. Bit of stamina work and I could press anyone 90 mins. This is so much bs I can't even believe I read through all this. Nice try though Jesse.

And by the way. His off the ball movement when we are in possession is pretty shit. Headless chicken with no meaningful runs at all.

Thought this was a thread from a year ago bumped.

Turns out preseason performance against teams trying to warm up their players isn't all that reflective of the actual season performance.

If United had a dynamic right forward, Lingard's goal/assist output as a regular XI could be put aside because he can press/close down the best, move the ball quick, can link up and start transitions...but until there's someone better than him in his position with a much high goal/assist output or a right forward who has a good goal/assist output, it's only fair to judge him more on his goal/assist output if he's first XI atm.

I've always rated him, but not as a consistent first XI. His goal/assists output isn't nearly enough and without a clear goal scoring threat in the first XI (Martial and Rashford must improve with what seems to be a clear chance now), Lingard has to contribute massively. I say anything close to 20 goals/assist would be a very good season from him.
No you it couldn't. You can't have a #10 that averages 2 assists per year and challenge the big boys. Sorry not having it. As long as we have this guy playing in advanced positions, whether you want to call him a #10 or RW or a false 9, or whatever, we are going nowhere and we will be dipping in and out of the top 4. Just look at what City and Liverpool have in those positions and tell me with a straight face that Lingard is anywhere near that quality; he wouldn't even make their bench and even his biggest fanboys know it.

Basically - he’s a defensive forward. Offers nothing in attack but is very useful for defensive transitions. He’s the type of player that would be a very important cog in the wheel IF you had forwards around him firing on all cylinders. Most of the time the forwards around him aren’t and he becomes a scapegoat - well because he doesn’t do anything offensively over a long average period.

His defensive contributions are so huge that it is hard to find someone in his position that contributes a greater, more desirable, offensive contribution to really keep him out of an important game.

Welbeck and Park Ji sung played that role for us across our teams in the past couple generations. If the team is doing great, they get praise. If not then then average offensive contributions are scapegoated.
