Thought it would be interesting to track what the VAR decisions will be during the first league campaign and how they impact each match then with time, VARs impact on the title, European cup places and relegation...and of course the amount of penos Smalling will give away from shirt grabbing, because that's all the rage.

Hopefully Liverpool get stung badly this year with it, to make up for their fecking luck last season...

The time doesn’t really bother me, they’ll just add extra on at the end. The main thing is they use it correctly and come to the correct decision.

Good thread. VAR is a major turnoff for me personally. Dread the thought of more penalties (free goals), overturned goals by millimeters offside (no advantage), VAR chants in stadiums, and the punditry filling up all their time discussing rules changes that VAR brings about.

More than anything else about the upcoming season, I want to be wrong about all this, but feel pretty confident I won’t be.

Wonder if we could get a poll asking if people are in favour of PL VAR before the season starts? Would be interesting to see how it changes by the end of the season.

Was always for VAR as a system but have a feeling it will be a shit show in PL, wont much change if those in front of monitor are on same incompetent level as those who ref the game on the pitch.

One thing that will be annoying is players who stop playing, similar to when they raise their arm for offsides, and run to the ref and gesticulate for VAR all while they should continue to play through a stoppage. Or players surrounding the ref and appealing for VAR.

I think we all just want a high level of consistency...and hopefully there's a referee tracker where we can say, okay, this linesman/lineswoman is shit or really good and his ref has been overturned X amount of times.

Agree. The delays are going to seriously piss people off.

I think the offside rule needs to be looked at again. Whilst offside is offside and there's no room for error, VAR will lead to some ridiculously tight calls.

I think there should be more space allowed between the attacker and the last defender. Perhaps so long as any part of the body is in an onside position then it can be classed as onside? So if a strikers foot is onside but the rest of his body is 'offside' I then he can be deemed as on. I know this sort of reverses the harshness of offside, but the benefit should be to the attacker (I think so anyway).

Dreading it still think mistakes will be made and there'll be too many stoppages, whilst checking.
I think Neville made a good point last night when he said if you consider the fact that every offside decision will be correct going forward then that is a massive plus.

Don't expect this to run smoothly as it's still a new system and there'll no doubt be mistakes and frustrations along the way, but I'm glad it has been implemented and I think for the most part it will benefit the game.

Agree with this so much. The conversation needs to start here anyway or we’re going to be disallowing goals where no advantage was being gained (City winner v Spurs in CL).

It’s like saying every driver who goes a fraction over the limit will get a ticket. There are too many instances, under the current offside rule, where the attacker has gained no advantage (i.e. an elbow is offside) yet he would still be penalized.

I hope Ole has taken Smalling to one side and explained to him the perils of his defending at corners! Hopefully McGuire/Lindelof pairing means we don't see much of Smalling anyway.

That was overturned? You see the stadium now cheering the VAR screen like it’s their Wizard of Oz? Pretty ugly stuff

I thought var was going to be used to overturn clear and obvious errors..?
Sterling was about 5cm offside

Wholeheartedly agree. It's bonkers as it is.

Always going to be some like you I suppose.
 You mean people who don't cry because the rules are applied correctly? Why am I not surprised to find you bitching about this?

Horrendous, offside by centimetres! What advantage does sterling have with 5cm's, absolutely bonkers decision.

I don't like VAR at all in situations like this. It's HORRIBLE to get your goal disallowed for thing like this. Not to mention how VAR took a lot of "enjoyment" out, can't even celebrate goals anymore.
