I would first point out that am completely against VAR, & have been from the start. It is good for things like offsides, either they are or not, but awful when deciding things like penalties for fouls & handballs, as these are down to the opinion of someone & not black or white. The penalty today is a separate issue, & unfair to blame VAR for, as this is the stupid rule FIFA has brought in regarding goalies moving or off line until ball kicked. Might as well ban penalties completely & give the opposition a goal, as no goalie will ever be able to save a goal under these rules unless the player taking the penalty is careless.

This will only be the start, & all those saying they support VAR, wont be when a stupid decision goes against their side, which they will

It takes a bit of the magic out of the game, but it’s really important that the correct decisions are made. It’s a tough trade-off.
I get your point but personally don't find it that tough. The "magic of the game" is the only point of football - it literally has zero other significance. If something makes football less enjoyable to watch then there's no reason to do it.

Let's face it, the driving force behind the Sports Justice agenda is that decision controversy helps fill endless hours of pointless sports punditry programming. The injustice of a goal that may have been a few centimetres offside only seems important to people who waste far too much time listening to tedious ex-pros twatting on about "controversies" for hours on end to fill airtime.

That's the only question I have for today, it seemed like a clear foul to me.
The lack of information to the viewer is a major problem. The commentators talk out of their ass and normally get it wrong.

I want to know that the ref's have atleast checked the decision. Its bad that they got it wrong but its even worse if they just completely skipped over it.

Can still celebrate goals but in the back of your mind you’ll know it can be snatched away in an instant. Flip side is when you get angry for conceding a sloppy goal but var rules it out.

If it comes to the correct decision more often than before then it makes the game more fair. The pain is worth it.

It's hard to see which frame that shows when the ball is played, I'd argue that both city goals that went to var were wrong when the ball was played
Fans that think that VAR is a fail-free system are wrong. Especially when it comes to offside calls. Because of what you just said.
Still: as long as you apply the same technology and are consequent I dont have a problem with it. I just dont get this idea of that we should allow some kind of leeway, when it will just make the decision even more challengable. At least the offside-rule as it stands to day is logical. To change it to "plus one feet" or something similar will not make one iota of a difference in debatable decions by VAR, it will just make the rule less logical.

I don't mind the penalty one. Encroachment has been rife for y
A- it played no part in Aguero missing
B- Rice encroached again when it was retaken even if it was less obvious[/QUOTE]
They are not going to disallow the goal because the defender encroached. They are only going to retake it if the pen went in favour of the encroaching player.

Commentators aren't much better than us sadly but they get paid. Maybe it was checked but like you said, the viewer have been told nothing.

For a while I have said the same thing about close offsides calls. I think the bar for offsides during VAR should be that they check the frame chosen as the moment the ball is struck as well as the one before and after. If the player is onsides in any of those three frames it is onside.
I like that, realistically in most cases those 2 frames should give a clear view and a better judgement to allow or disallow a goal. Today was never anything but a City rout but these decisions in a tight 0-0 could be hard to take. Get used to it this first season will have a lot of annoyingly correct decisions. If this is to change this will need to be done globally, you can't have a different VAR in the PL than in La Liga or the Champions League.

ALL goals are checked, they just confirmed on PL post-match with one of the former referees.

The fifth goal was checked by the VAR team and was not considered to be a foul by Rodri in the build-up.

Ok, seems harsh though for me. Part of me thinks that ref are purposely tougher on new players who come to the PL regarding certain fouls.

It's going to kill the game.

That indescribable moment when your team score will be gone forever :(

I'd rather a few incorrect decisions than this crap.

The tension of whether VAR allows/disallows a goal brings new drama in itself and combined with the re-assurement that 99% of decisions are going to be correct, it's a welcome addition to football. Seriously, what's the whining about? You want unfair goals? You enjoy offside goals?

VAR is not flawless. Its embarrasing that City won because of an offside goal by Sterling. Before then it was anyone's game. Two Norwich potential opportunities were wrongly flagged offside yesterday so no-VAR isn't the solution either.
I think the most interesting thing about the application of VAR so far is that the PL-referees do not apply the offside-rule/VAR at all as they do on the continent so far. Two games so far and we have seen linesmen flagging for the most minimum of offsides (even if they have mostly been right) instead of letting the play go and leave it to VAR to decide if it results in a goal. Thats going to be a problem if the PL are hell bent on executing the VAR-rules in a different way than the rest of Europe.

So it will be exactly the same problem again... just moving the point of measurement.
To answer you and the others:
I think the offside rule should ideally look at the center of mass of the involved players. Would need quite a bit of computing power to be able to do that, plus advanced image recognition to even interpret players' bodies correctly from a still image or short sequence of playback. But technological hurdles aside, this would ensure that players do not take unfair advantage from starting beyond the opponent lines ahead of time, and at the same time do away with the tip-of-the-toe-was-5cm-offside bullshit.
In my opinion, the center of mass thing is much closer to the original idea of the offside rule, where laser precision to determine the position of all player limbs was not part of the equation.

Good thread. VAR is a major turnoff for me personally. Dread the thought of more penalties (free goals), overturned goals by millimeters offside (no advantage), VAR chants in stadiums, and the punditry filling up all their time discussing rules changes that VAR brings about.

More than anything else about the upcoming season, I want to be wrong about all this, but feel pretty confident I won’t be.
Prophetic comment it would appear...

I'm lost for words too. I just don't get it, offside goals are all fun and laughs, until they happen against your team.

A- When has that ever mattered? If a player pulls the shirt of another to stop them getting onto the end of a throughball then it's a foul. If that player was never getting on the end of it it doesn't change that it's a foul.

B - City scored. Why would they retake it? It's just the same as playing the advantage.

I don't think they are tougher, in fact today it was the opposite. I lost count on how many cynical fouls Rodri committed today but he didn't get booked.

How bout the idea that if they were never getting onto the end of it, it’s fair to say no goal was being scored. And if VAR determines those are penalties now, you’re turning non scoring situations into free goals. Which is gross.

Why does that make a difference? The referee who is supposed to make the judgement also decides things which are not black and white. VAR just adds a second opportunity for them to reverse their original opinion having seen it again.
