Of course he'll be joining a top 4 team. But my point is, does he want to join a club that is only aspiring to be top 4? Why not league champions or chellengers?

I don't follow your point with the bolded part. Finishing so far behind City means we will probably make top 4, despite only 2 signings to the first team? I agree that we'll try to sign him, but i don't see what has changed now that will convince him we've turned a corner. I don't necessarily think he aspires to play for a team that aims to qualify for Europe, which is what some seem to have convinced themselves. I think he wants to sign for the Manchester United we used to know that competed on all fronts.

I agree re Greenwood being a Striker per se. However I can't see him jumping ahead of Rashford and Martial for a few years yet, especially under Ole who I think has a lot of time for Rashford. His best bet is to make that RW type position his own and integrate into the team. I like the look of him there and having watched him there, I'm less sure he'll 100% be a striker. He could make that spot his own or learn his trade there before being moved up front in the future, is what I'm trying to say. Another thing worth mentioning though is that our RW literally never has to hug the touchline, they spend most of their time drifting around the striker. We look like implementing a flyid front three with no fixed position, so they all need to be flexible. It's good for his development. I'm certainly not ruling him out for this role.
Ornstein has gone on record and said if he comes back to England he favours a move to Man Utd. And if he joins us and we make another top acquisition in midfield we won't be far behind the front runners. It's not hard to see either with our defence looking very strong on paper.

Our objective this season was always gonna be top 4 whether we signed 3 players or six. If we integrate 3 or 4 of the academy lads ( Mason and Tuanzebe nailed on) then young players will want to join such a project. Add Sancho on the RW along with a quality midfielder and we're gonna be a match for most teams.

Mason can play as a RF but it would be a waste of his ability long term if he's not played as the central striker. I understand what you're saying about interchanging positions in attack but he needs to be starting centrally to make the most of his potential long term and i'm someone that knows him and his family very well.

Rashford is not a striker and has never shown a killer instinct infront of goal to suggest he could be a prolific goal scorer. He imo is a wing forward who attacks space and is a bit lost in confined space. I fully expect Mason to overtake him as the central striker if it comes down to a either or situation in a years time.

Ole said he will be a first team player this season.

Is it just me or Ole really just confirmed why we sold Lukaku, to let this guy play this season.

Never thought of it like that, but good point.
Huge sign of faith from Ole
That's what i think. I'm sure we could have gotten some random decent striker but we chose not to. We might have tried for Dybala since it was an opportunity too good not to try, but we have huge fate in Greenwood.

That's not why we sold Lukaku, but certainly why we didn't mind not getting a replacement.

Whatever he said means Greenwood is in the first team roster this season.

Exciting news and whatever happens, this will fast track him into a seasoned teenage pro like Rooney back in the day.

I feel like we've just put the final nail in the Sancho coffin. He wanted to see proof that we've sorted ourselves out. He'll have been watching what we do in the transfer window and I'm sure he's as underwhelmed as we are. He'll see all the abuse the club is getting over it, the negativity. We've just set ourselves up for a huge uphill struggle.

By the end of the season City, Chelsea, Liverpool, Arsenal and Spurs will look more attractive to him, as they probably do right now.
He’ll probably want to watch the actual football than read the soap on the internet.

Let’s not expect too much on the young lad, but would be surprised if he didn’t score over 15 goals this season.
Haha.. Can't help it. It was just a pipe dream wish where he starts every game. But I just love watching the way he plays.

As one of the biggest Club in the world, United shouldn't rely on 17 y.o. to provide entertainment. What a circus we had in the last 4-5 years.

Id love to see him start on Sunday.
If not he's got to get 30 minutes at least, he's so dangerous.

Does anyone reckon he could be a surprise starter or reckon ole will go with James instead?

I think a bigger factor was the way we want the team to play, but obviously Greenwood fits that style better so you're right to an extent.

Doubt he starts him, as he is the only other striker on the club beside martial/rashford(both of whom will be starting)
Yeh you’re probably right. I just think from watching pre-season greenwood looked our best option at RW, think James looked far more raw and more of a bench option in comparison. His age is almost working against him it feels as his ability looks to be there for me

He’s better than James (tbh I think Chong looks better too). James is older and a new signing though so I suspect he will be ahead for now.

My prediction: Mason Greenwood to have a similar impact on United and England ala Kylian Mbappe when he was 17 at Monaco. Same eye for goal (Greenwood being better with both feet) , dribbling abilities (Mbappe has this one), and visual awareness, but Mbappe was and still is ridiculously explosive. He may also play the same right winger position, when Ole picks him.

Don’t know if he will be that good, but that is the sort of bracket I am hopeful he can be in. I think he’s in the Rooney, Mbappé, Owen etc bracket of young talent.

I’m very hopeful with this one. Never seen a striker like him since I’ve followed United. Rossi was the only possible.

I just don’t have the time to follow anyone else but the first team with anywhere near the attention I should do to form an opinion so. . .

Can someone tell me if this is a tad ridiculous statement or are we about to witness the second coming.

If he has an Mbappe effect we’ll win the league then City will sign him but I pray you’re right.

You what? Since when has it worked like that? If we won the league we’d have far more chance of taking City’s best player than the other way round.

Tongue in cheek, stay calm.

I was equating it to Mbappe leaving Monaco for PSG - to be clear I don’t think he’s going anywhere regardless of how good he becomes.

This forum

Honestly excited if he has an Mbappe impact.

No pressure to the lad but he could be United best striker ever.

Every time he has the ball near opponent box, I'm expecting something incredible happen. If it's up to me, he'll be starting every game.
And you’re not a coach which is why a 17 year old won’t be playing 50-60 games this season.

We have better players than them, and they will not be our best two players this season. But they do represent ‘new’ I guess.

Greenwood is a natural number 10. Last season I kept saying Chong was being played out of position because right wing is where the need was but he was always a natural left winger.

Greenwood is a midfielder/striker who lacks the explosiveness of Rashford/Mbappe but has excellent vision , balance, passing range and control.

in pre-season he looked our biggest goal threat

I think he might well score and stay in the team. Crazy to think he's 17.

You want to bring him through slowly but there is a genuine chance he could become a vital first team player

I don't see the hype in this kid. He's scored in a friendly against a bad Inter side and people saying he's the next RVP and Ronaldo rolled into one. He's too small. I see the next David Bellion tbh.
This is the worst post I've seen in any forum, ever. A chimp nonsensically bashing it's fists against a keyboard can come up with a more logical combination of letters than this utter drivel. This guy should be demoted to the level below a Newbie if it exists; or if not a level should be created specifically for him. I would call this level "hasn't got a Scoobie", reserved only for the worst of the worst posters, but he'd be surprised to find he's the only member, as no one could match him. No one else would be surprised though.

Don’t get it either, keep hearing the youngsters are going to get games but they’ll have to wait for likes of Mata, Lingard and Sanchez to fail repeatedly before they get a look in. Greenwood might not even make the bench on Sunday, Gomes, Chong and Garner definitely won’t.
Greenwood will definitely be on the bench for Sunday.

Just bought my Greenwood #26 away shirt today.

Apologies if that offends those who have decided to no longer buy shirts because we didn’t buy Bruno Fernandes.

Well there are those proposing to not buy merchandise in protest to this summer, of which their issue was a lack of signings. Bruno Fernandes seems the most common cause of frustration from what I’ve read.

Any adult wearing a shirt with a players name on the back is pretty offensive.

Will definitely get minutes tomorrow but can’t see him starting.

If it was me I’d start with Lingard on the right (unpopular choice I know) and introduce Greenwood with 30 mins to go.
