I doubted Maguire, I was wrong. Made a HUGE difference! Smalling or Jones out there and we might have lost 4-0! Commanding in the air and on the floor. Take a bow son.

Him and Lindelof look like they're going to complement each other very well. Both are comfortable on the ball but Lindelof is a bit classier in terms of defending compared to Maguires no nonsense get it the feck out of there style. Works though. Doesn't panic, just gets it done.

Absolute rock. Was pleasantly surprised, hope he continues to prove me wrong.

Lad's a baller. Great on the ball, leader at the back. Heads anything that flies!

I don't think he's worth 80 million, but he was very good. I'll see how he does over the season, and may well reverse my valuation of him at the end of it.

Yeah he's not worth 80m right now but if he can play like he did today, as well as contribute to Lindelof playing well too, I don't care what he cost.

Chelsea were toothless but it was nice to see a player back up his finger pointing in our back line.

Also love the fact he’s such a focal point from set pieces, think it could be key when unlocking the ‘smaller’ sides.

Very good start.

Handled everything so gracefully. He's a pure power defender and leaves no prisoners behind. Glad we threw the cash at him.

Seconded. The guy is really calm while defending and a big threat at free kicks. Fantastic performance today.

He drinks the vodka, he drinks the jager, his 'eads feckin' massiiiiiiiveee.

Brilliant today.

Hopefully reminded people what a good defender actually is and does which is the first step to letting go of Smalling and Jones.

Very encouraging impact, just little things can have a cumulative effect, like playing a short 10 yard pass that goes forward instead of to the side or back can stop the momentum of the oppositions press. He has a reassuring presence that should allow the whole defense to perform better, look forward to him and Lindelof forming a partnership.

He was really good, and find him and Lindelof complementing each other really well. The only thing they miss is pace, but AWB and Shaw should help on that aspect.

It is amazing for once to see our backline not panicking when the other team presses. Instead him and Lindelof were cool, easily passing to the other players.

And to think, we could have had him a year ago for £10m less...

Was fecking immense today, we'd have lost that game last season.
I actually think it’s good that he didn’t come last season. Don’t think last season did anyone any good, in terms of performance, morale, growth or anything. This season, with a completely clean slate, is the perfect time for him to come in.

Already saw him shouting at people ordering them about. Exactly what we need.

Quality game. Glad he didn’t get the captain armband so soon and have that pressure.

Time to find someone that can actually put the ball on his head and not knee high or over the top of everyone.

I like that outlook.
