Those 3 or 4 times Pedro ballooned it into the 3rd tier really did hurt us in the shots stats. I'm glad we weren't as wasteful as that.

And NBC showed the possession as 48 to 52, so they didn't exactly boss it either.

Those stats are misleading. Chelsea were restricted to long-range efforts all game. Clear-cut chances were few and between (did they have any at all?)

The stats won't show you how devastating we were on the counter either.

Expected goals have a better prediction value than real goals. Though saying that, we had quite a bit XG than Chelsea today.

I personally don’t like our 4231 formation with Pogba so deep. Prefer a three man midfield so Paul can roam around and use his creativity a little bit more.

I also prefer a staring line up without Pereira. Don’t think he offer enough quality in attack and his defensive contribution is sometimes questionable. Think Fred is a better alternative.

But Ole did a great job today, good seeing Matic and Mata benched and Axel given a spot ahead of the older CBs.

We conceded many soft chances to be fair, but hopefully that will be ironed out soon!

I think this might be one of those rare seasons when we will make some signings in the January window.

But this tactic where we allow teams to play and wait for counter attacks is not good in a long run. I am curious how we will play on away games against weaker teams. I hope that we will not give Wolves, Everton, Saints and other teams chance to dominate us like we did last season. It is very risky approach. If you concede first, you are in problems.

I have a feeling that he will do like what SAF did with the midfield. Have someone to ping the balls really quick to the pacy forward line instead of going for control. That someone being is Pogba of course.

It is risky but he will have to do it with the midfield we have.

Err, Emerson had two shots inside the box, one crashing off an upright/post combo, and Barkley missed from about 8 yards.

True, but so is a high pressing team. Despite the stats showing Chelsea having more shots than us, most of them were harmless long range shots. I honestly dont think we have enough quality in midfield yet to go out and dominate teams like Liverpool and City do. What we do have though is loads of pace upfront and Pogba to hit those lethal through balls. If we become a lethal counter attacking team, other teams will be wary of committing too many players forward against us since they know we can hurt them on the counter

It not that long ago Leicester won the league relying on counters. Just because gegenpressing/tikitaka is all the rage now does not mean we have to play that way.

I agree, and also enjoyed the match while feeling that we weren't entirely playing CHELSEA, as such. Wolves is going to be more of a test, for the tactical reasons you mentioned, and a great check for signs of progress versus last season.

Fantastic result, extremely lucky not to be punished by the chavs early in the game. Our midfield is the weakest link, and if we are pressed by a top team we may crumble. Let's what Fred brings to the table, hopefully something good.

Chelsea have a very strong midfield and it is not surprising that they controlled the game. On the other hand, we have a stronger defense, and their attack and defense is not that good. That and they had a pop from distance a bit too many times. Apart from one really good chance in the first half, don't think Chelsea ever really opened us up.

Overall, apart from a sloppy first half, we played well. Good start, and hopefully that gives the team a bit more confidence.

It's the first game and we've got no injuries. By the time the Europa league starts we'll be using most of the squad. Rojo and Darmian will be gone with any luck.
